the "sex appeal" seems to be tongue in cheek, so I don't find it offensive at all.

Your mileage may vary. It seems like the womenfolk are really raising hell about this one, judging by posts on various forums and the "second opinion" from Nicole on IGN.

I understand the criticism, but really what is a female video game heroine supposed to look like? I don't know of too many frumpy female video game heroines. Would a frumpy female character make the feminists happy?

Even if it would, the fact is the majority of video gamers are males, so it is obvious which segment the developers don't want to risk alienating. It is unfortunate, but that is how it is.

So I read Nicoles take. Pretty much the same ole blah blah blah. Really. What's wrong with an attractive main character? Would she prefer Dariah or Ellen Degeneras as the lead in this game? If I were a girl I'd be moreoffended by the helpless Princess Peach who must have a man save her. Bayonetta is strong, clever, willing to stand up for what's right, funny, and she has some great martial arts skills. She just happens to be attractive as well. Big deal.

That's how I felt. People have too much time on their hands to complain about too much stuff that doesn't even matter. Okay, the main character is a blatantly over-the-top sexualized female. Does that affect how the game plays? Not at all. You don't see me complaining that every main character in games (especially Japanese ones) is some gorgeous, flawless bishounen, with a half open shirt revealing rippling pectorals and washboard abs.

I would play that.

Do male gamers get offended when the male character has sex appeal for girls?

Fun fact

In Final Fantasy 12, Basch was originally suppose to be the main character but the higher ups at Square Enix thought he was too manly and scare away the Final Fantasy fans since they wouldn't find him attractive.  So that's why they forced the development team to create a new main character that was your typical bishounen, and that's how Vaan was created.

Oh, the Japanese loves their androgynous main characters. That was actually the subplot of a "Bones" I watched yesterday.
