http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/specialArt.cfm?artid=19255At long last, the Trilogy has made it to our shore and is finally within our grasp.
The Metroid Prime program was one of Nintendo's greatest operations. It followed The Hunter's path of destruction on that infernal machine, Gamecube, where it was hailed by Pirate Command for its production values and game design. It brought that experiment of three-dimensional exploration and blasting to a new generation of Piratelings just itching for a fight.
There was great upheaval over turning such critical plans to the untested battalion of programming misfits at Retro. At a time when Pirate underlings across the acid gray earth had few expectations for a return to glory, this mission was critical.
Inital planning began 11 cycles ago with the formation of Retro Studios by Commander Jeff Spangenberg. Spangenberg previously headed up Iguana Entertainment, the squadron responsible for the first two Turok dinosaur hunting simulation games on console N-6-4.
Retro Studios was formed in a partnership with Nintendo who began working together closely on Operation: Metroid Prime. Before this could be achieved, however, five other missions had to be scrapped so that all resources could be focused. The ultimate Aran Battle Simulation would soon begin. The sucessful operation, Super Metroid, inspired the Pirate technology wizards and spurred them on to greatness.
Eventually Prime began as a typical shooting simulation in third-pirate perspective. A short demo was displayed on viewscreen at SpaceWorld in 20.0.0, with The Invader walking down a corridor and being attacked by heroic insectoid aliens. Piratelings reacted positively to the demo, having been waiting for a new Battle Sim for over half a decacycle.
Prime was still early in development when overlord Miyamoto himself suggested that Retro should switch to first-pirate, and almost every log up to that point had to be decommissioned. The Homeworld was sent into disarray. Why was Retro turning the Hunter into the galactic laughingstock Master Chief? How could Soccer Pirates learn how to utilize the Chozo technology? Of what use would such a program possibly be?
Details of work progress inside the Development Hive were scarce; many workers were terminated; and only a single screenshot served to chase away the fog of disbelief and disillusionment that had gripped the planet.
