Punch-Out!! Trailer Reveals New Character, Pink Jumpsuit
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:25:14 PM »
The latest Punch-Out!! trailer from GDC 2009 shows off gameplay, iconic music, Disco Kid, and the classic training sequence.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=18038

Originally an exclusive to the Nintendo Channel, the latest trailer for Punch-Out!! is shown here.

The trailer contains gameplay footage that shows off four different boxers: Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, King Hippo, and newcomer Disco Kid. It also shows the heroic Little Mac going through training with series staple Doc Louis. Little Mac is also seen in his trademark pink jumpsuit from the original NES classic.

I like the art style of this game, it captures the spirit of the NES game without compromising graphical quality.

Both the NES and Super NES Punch-Out!! game titles have two exclamation points, so it isn't because of the double-i in "Wii". It's just a nice coincidence.

You guys sound too positive. I'm pulling the Wii drought card. Punchout!! and Excitebots are not core.

Considering Punch-Out and Excitebike and two of my favorite NES games, Super Punch-Out is one of my favorite SNES games, and Excite Truck was a huge welcome surprise, (I misssed EB64) these are extremely core to me.

Zelda and Mario they are not, but I'm as happy as a pig in **** right now.

You know what I find ironic? Many "core gamer" websites gave this game glowing impressions. Yet Sean Malstrom, a supporter and defender of the Wii, was not impressed at all, saying the game "was content being the same game just in shinier wrapping" (I doubt he actually played the game, though, just commented on the games).

Maybe its just me, but even if the game does look like a re-imagining of the first game I can't help but be won over by it. It looks like a winner and might take the series to new heights. The impressions seem to confirm this. It also helps that NLG promises even more content that they can't reveal just yet (the balance board rumor being one of them).

Its basically the Street Fighter IV of Nintendo's lineup: A classic game reinvented for both old and new audiences and a lot of charm.

Its hard to hate on a game like this!

The visual style alone makes me want the game, it adds a new layer to the tremendous gameplay of the first. Games like this are WHY I enjoy Wii, the graphics cannot rely on pushing polygons but are better suited to a more artistic style which Punch-Out easilky has. Also how is a 2 player mode just like the original NES game?

I think people fail to realize that not every game needs to innovate in order to be good.

Innovation is something that takes time, a lot of planning, work and money. Not every franchise can and needs to be revitalized. Punch-Out is one of them.

I suspect that once the game is released reviewers will try to compare it to games like Fight Night, which would be comparing a Popeye short to Disney's Fantasia. Fight Night is meant to try and realistically simulate boxing using a complex control scheme and the realistic graphics possible. Punch-Out on the other hand is about pure fun using an idea so simple anyone can understand it; watch your opponent, avoid his punches and go in for the kill.

I don't know if the final game will be fantastic. But from what I've seen and read the game looks to be very fun and worth playing.

If people like it or not its a matter of taste.

There really is no other game like Punch-Out!!, not to mention the franchise has been dormant for a very long time. It IS FRESH in today's gaming world because that type of gameplay it is being glossed over (or crapped on by the 3D arcade fighters) by the industry which is actually pretty sad.

Yeah, Punch-Out is a pure arcade game. It might have some modern ideals, but the whole thing looks classic from beginning to end.

Its like watching The Wizard of Oz on Blu-Ray: It might be the same classic film but the digital resolution makes it look like new again.

I was watching some more videos of the fights and I love the animations and the voice work. It is hilariously done and looks like a live action cartoon.

Are people really worried that the game won't be good?  I think they're more worried that it just won't hold up well for 10 hours and $50.

There are a lot of details that we don't know yet, but if there are only 16 fighters (like in Super Punch-Out!!) and you can beat it in a couple hours your first time people are going to feel gypped.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Well that will be those people's problem then.  Arcade style games like Punch-Out have to be short or else they become boring and repetitive.  Of course in order to add more value to them, this is why Arcade games on home consoles have multiple difficultly settings and different modes like Time Attack and others.

As long as Punch-Out contains different difficulties as well as varies game modes to play, then it'll easily have over 10 hours worth of gameplay.  And considering that Nintendo has recently said that the game has a lot of unlockables, it looks like Nintendo has made sure the game will have enough value for it's price.

So, any word on if this title will give any kind of multiplayer support?  I know the single player campaign is all about timing and patterns, but it be nice to get something a small step up from Wii-Boxing too without having to go to something like Fight Night, etc.
