Namco has confimed a GameCube RPG (exclusive at least for now) in the 'Tales of' Series, Tales of Symphonia. No specific release date yet, and no confirmation of a US or Euro release, but you can check out Namco's official ToS site here for character and story info... of course, it's all in Japanese.

From what I've read at Impress' GAME Watch it would seem that they're melding the style of the original Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom with that of the newer Tales of the World for the GameBoy Advance.

this is awesome, tales of Phantasia was an awesome game with awesome things, but the story was only pretty good. the story for this one might be better, but the fighting looks really cool. but does anyone know if the fighting will be 2-D or 3-D? i know it'll be in 3-D enviroments, but will we be able to move around, or be stuck on a "track"?

now all i need is earthbound 2 to be announced, and skies of arcadia 2 info to be released

well they said this will be the first tales game to feature 3d enviorments so i have a few things i think it could be
first could be just that everything is in 3d with the same linear motion battle system
second could be that the characters are 3d (cel shading) with the same 2d battle system
or third, what i am hoping for, is that they have the entire battle system in 3d almost like star ocean- you still control your one character and it will still run the same way but with a more star ocean feel
i personally hope for that- but with the track record of the tales game (its a good one) i think the game will be good
and i do think it will come out here- probably early next year or even later this year

I think it is the first one, rpglover (lmostly the same as ToP, just in 3d, that's the impression I got anyways). I am extremely looking forward to ToS. Has anyone else seen the video of the game from IGN? The environments look SPECTACULAR!!! I love the artistic, yet real style that the towns and that one mining dungeon had. I believe ToP is coming out on the GBA as well, for anyone who hasn't played the game. It is very good, and in my opinion, the story was more than "only pretty good". It actually went more in-depth than many RPG's have. The graphics, artwork, and detail on ToP for Snes was amazing, and hopefully that will happen with this game as well.

Many people have been hoping for a really great RPG to anticipate for the Gamecube. Well folks, this is it. And I mean that with all seriousness.

clonester- i agree with you here
i do think it will be the same linear motion battle system with a 3d face lift
and yes i love the art style

it looks really good- and the cel shading technique used is very nice
hopefully the animation is up to speed- i havent seen enough on the game to make a decision but the tales track record is a good one
if this turns out anything like tales of phantasia (the one on snes...which this game already reminds me of) then i will be good
personally i love the battle system they do- its makes the game more fun to play

This game has been high on my most wanted list for a long time.  It was really funny reading the PS2 people's complaints that they weren't getting it though.  (Makes me kind of remember posting on Konami's board.... nah.)  It's just funny watching them squirm now.

i got some more information on this game now- including the battle system-

The new battle system for Tales of Symphonia is called the Multi-Line Linear Motion Battle system (ML-LMB system). The battle screen, which looks completely 3D, will actually play on invisible planes that make the battle system run similarly to previous Tales games. By targeting an enemy with a character, the player can create a plane in which the character and the enemy will be moving around. However, the same enemy can be targeted and fought by another character, creating a plane from a different angle, which gives Symphonia a 3D feeling compared to previous titles in the series. (gamespot)

thats the battle system- its also being said that the game will have lots of speech and characters
hope this clears some stuff up

I really, really hope Namco doesn't get cheesy and forget to release this in the US because that would be a straight up tragedy.  The game is looking really nice and I, for one, will very likely add it to my GC collection when it comes out.

lots of speech is bad. very bad. if only they won't hire crappy voice actors, which is rare in this business. and it takes them a bit longer to send it to the us.

Wow.....so we still get the same 2D Sidescrolleresque battle system with a 3D twist. Cool, one of the things I loved about the Tales of...series is that the battle system was completely different from any other that I've played in a RPG, good to see that it will be back in a slightly altered form. Well I hope it hits the US I think it will under their agreement Nintendo would be publishing it. So I given the lack of RPGS on Cube I see no reason why Nintendo would release it stateside.

hopefully the 'lots of speech' is referring to battle grunts and such that don't need translation.. you know it would never get a decent redub.

anyway, thanks for the info rpglover. I'm even more excited now I know how the battles work.
hopefully they'll announce a release date soon.
I should learn Japanese, just in case ^_~

Is it just me, or does this game show how cell-shading can actually look beautiful?    I mean, I love Wind Waker and all, its just I hate the cell-shading in that game.  But i look at Tales and I am just drooling over the screens and video.

I am still a little confused about the battle system.  How exactly do these "planes" work?  Is the combat like Star Ocean or is it a little more restrictive?

I hope they don't do what they did in Tales of Destiny. They took almost all the Japanese speech just because it was Japanese. They should have just allowed you to turn all speech off instead of taking it out. Tales of Eternia (...Tales of Destiny II) had a pretty awful dub, but at least they tried. If they release Tales of Symphonia here they'll probably dub it.

zero: this is how it sounds like it works to me.

basically, you get into a fight, it's in ful 3-d. you can move around everywhere and such. but when you lock on an enemy to attack, it turns into 2-d, like a fighting game (budokai or ssb:m as examples) where it's still 3-d, but you fight in 2-d. and your allies can do this too, from different directions. even though your ally may be fighting to your left, he/she is still stuck on that "2-d plane" of fighting. that's the best i can explain it.
