Would you play these on the Gamecube?
« on: April 08, 2003, 08:09:30 PM »
With the movement of resurrecting older, classic games on next generation systems growing, some of the greatist games of the arcade are still undiscovered to a youger generation of gamers.  For many who remember the older arcade games, downloading MAME and roms, or simply buying or building you own arcade cabinet are ways to relive the experience.  Most of the arcade games that were ported to consoles in the past have suffered from downgrades in both sound and graphics, but with the power of newer systems some of the older games could be released better than arcade perfect.   If a developer were to invest in bringing some of the older arcade games out for the Gamecube, what ones would you want to see?  Below is a list of potential games, but feel free to add your own.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1-4 player)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II:  Turtles in Time (1-4 player)
Golden Axe (1-3 player)
Golden Axe:  Revenge of Death Adder (1-4 player)
The Simpsons (1-4 player)
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Samurai Shodown
Samurai Shodown II
X-Men (1-4 player)
Dungeons & Dragons:  Tower of Doom (1-4 player)
Dungeons & Dragons:  Shadow over Mystara (1-4 player)

There's nothing you can do.  It's a two party system.
Then I beleive I'll vote for a third party.

Help these kids, become something more than fruit salad, or a bottle of wine...

Question, how do you direct a bit of fruit in regards to it's goal in life? I personally, couldn't see myself talking to an apple. A pear however, that's a different story. One too risky for this family forum.
*Ahem*
I've said too much. Or not enough. Maybe I should just back off now.

Anyway, I'd buy a port of the Simpsons Arcade game. But only if it was dirt cheap. I'm sick of trying to play it with friends, all hunched over one keyboard. Braking arms while attempting to press stupid keys to move. No, A makes me go up, not you! Arg, space bar is YOUR jump button, not mine!

And Golden Axe is being re-released on PS2 later this year under the 'Sega-Ages' thing. Same game, 3D graphics, low price tag. But yeah, it seems it's exclusive to PS2.

I would love to see more arcade ports, but they would have to be cheap or packed in a collection with are arcade games in order to keep the thing at a decent value.

I don't live near any significant arcade, so that's part of the appeal of ports to me. At the same time, with the limited floor space, older arcade games eventually disappear, and if we did have porting or some kind many would just be forgotten. Also, I would like to support the game makers as much as I can as opposed to building  MAME machine and leaving them out of the loop. It sad to see people like SNK sink, but even sadder to realize that I leaching off of them with a King of Fighters 2001 rom. I much rather buy a King of Fighters compilation for that reason alone.

Light gun games have all but disappeared this generation, so I would like to see some of those. I would also like to see more shooters like Ikaruga. I heard Hudson is releasing a new Star Soldier so maybe there is a movement beginning to happen. Hopefully stuff like 1943 or R-Type and others will be revisited.

The Simpsons arcade game would be my first choice simply for the nostalgiac memories (plus the fact that there isn't a home version on any console, I wonder why they never ported it to SNES or Genesis?)  But I would expect such a remake to be cheap, cheap, cheap, or part of a large collection.
That's my opinion, not yours.

"I believe "Turtles in Time" was TMNT 5."

Actually it was TMNT IV.  And that was only IV on the SNES.  In the arcade it was TMNT II.  TMNT I and II in the arcade are TMNT II and IV for the NES and SNES.

Oh and X-Men was SIX players, not just four.

I certainly wouldn't pay for these game on their own but in collections it would be nice.  I believe Konami made the TMNT games, The Simpsons, and Sunset Riders.  All of which were four player arcade games that were only two players on consoles (except Simpsons which was never released on consoles at all) and I would love to play them with four players on the Gamecube.  So something like Konami Arcade Collection or something would be great.  Realistically they could probably just make an emulator and go the Sonic Mega Collection route.  Capcom could also do the same thing with some of their old arcade beat-em-ups like Final Fight and Captain Commando.

I think GBA is the perfect medium for reintroducing some of these classic ports to these younger gamers.  Also any new 2d sidescrollers will probably find a better home on the GBA.  Use the cube for current state of the art technology.  Also all of these older games are to be had for free from emulation sites on the internet for FREE, plus the roms on pc's feature a save feature for those older games that you had to sit for hours in one sitting to beat the game.

The problem with the GBA is that in order to play four players you need four GBAs and likely four games as well.  With a Gamecube compilation you only need one console and could easily use an emulator.  True I could just download an emulator for my PC but I can't play that on my TV or with four controllers.

If they did do compilations how would it work for licensed games?  Konami may have made The Simpsons arcade game but today would they have the rights to re-release it?

I would play some of them, if they were cheap as in $20 at most.  Otherwise, I'll either stick to ye olden "lesser" ports on my other consoles or try to find an arcade that still has those games, play them a while, then "haggle" with the arcade owner me possibly purchasing that Galaga machine next to the DDR machine for a decent $100 even.  You'll crack eventually, sucker!  Nobody plays Galaga but me, anyways!
