With James out of town, we bring in the Previews Editor, Mike Gamin (a.k.a. Pale on the forums).  Pale gets us started on a healthy dose of Super Smash Bros. Brawl discussion, and he also tells us about the new Final Fantasy for DS.  Lindemann just got Brawl and can now contribute to that topic, while Greg expounds upon the Wii Freeloader that will save him from Nintendo's hatred of Europe.

In the second segment, we play catch-up with Listener Mail.  Topics include: Rare on Virtual Console, Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Sin & Punishment replacing Star Fox, hypothetical Nintendo mergers and acquisitions, revisiting Jonny's review of Twilight Princess, and our Classic Controller setups for Brawl.  Please keep sending your great emails with questions for the crew and topic suggestions!

That's a lot of new business. But no mention of VC games. Is that feature going to be dropped?

Star Fox is in a similiar position to Donkey Kong post-Rare. Its having an identity crisis. I'd like for Star Fox go back to its roots of flying and shooting. Just take Star Fox 64 and blow that concept up, ham-fisted voice overs and all. Treasure would be a good candidate to develop, what are they doing now?

With Brawl I rotate between my Wavebird, Classic Controller and Wii-mote/Nunchuck.  The Wii-mote/Nunchuck setup took some getting use to, but I use it in Subspace Emissary and Classic mode.

The Brawl lag issue is a mystery that has some clues here but yeah, chalk it up to server inexperience. When  I play Team Fortress 2, I use my Wi-fi connection and get 50-80 ping with as many as 24 people. My lag issues have been pretty minimal,  my tip is to experiment and see who has the stronger connection and them host the game. I guess if you wanted to minimize lag you would have to:

1. Use a wired connection (direct connection to the cable/DSL modem if you're that hardcore)
2. Use a wired controller
3. Have everything else internet related off
4. Find people who have the same ISP as you.

I wonder if turning the music off would help too. I remember back when I played unhealthy amounts of Diablo 2, turning off the music alleviated lag. Though part of the fun is hearing the tunes...

Djunknown, not every episode is the same.  We just didn't have much to say about the VC this week.  When Nintendo releases some interesting games, or we've at least played them, we'll spend some time on that.  We also don't talk about news every week or read listener mail every week.  "RFN is like a box of chocolates..."

The lag issue is really stupid, I have played many games online.  Wii games and PC games.  Having problems with brawl is hopefully only temporary.

Good episode, I far as the 10 out of 10 debate goes, I think if a game achieves all that it is intended to achieve without error, then it is a 10.

I agree with Jonny on the 10/10 debate, although I'm hardly an independent validation, seeing as he was my reviews editor for dickity years. The scheme I use w/ the classic controller is very similar to Jonny's--A is too far to the right to be comfortable as the primary action button (see: Mario Kart DS), so I have

A & X: Jump
B: Smash
Y: Special
(All else is default)

Of course, I primarily use my Wavebird. Sadly, my second wavebird's control stick died on me the day I got my copy of Brawl.

Lindemann just got Brawl and can now contribute to that topic, while Greg expounds upon the Wii Freeloader that will save him from Nintendo's hatred of Europe.

Just thought I'd mention that the recent updates to the Wii Shop Channel for WiiWare (it hit Australia during the week, not sure about Euro-PAL land) apparently cause the Freeloader to stop working.

I'll get Infernal to confirm this as I think he installed it by mistake, but various homebrew sites are claiming there's a new authentication procedure that slip-streamed its way into the update.

From what I've heard, the recent update to the Wii Shop Channel does not kill the Freeloader at present. However, the new authentication procedure has been prepared, and apparently as soon as the firmware is further updated so that the Wii System Menu utilises this authetication procedure, the Freeloader will be rendered useless.

One could update now to retain the ability to access the Wii Shop Channel while still being able to use the Freeloader (I did so last night, and Brawl still works fine), but at some point there will be an update that Freeloader users will have to avoid in order to preserve its functionality. The alternative boot method may be able to help circumvent disc-based updates on future games such as Mario Kart, while online updates of course can be avoided. Just how severe the effects of not updating would be on using things like the Shop Channel and so forth in the longer term, we can't say yet.

They better not fix this, I had plans for importing insane Japanese games as a feature.

So if the makers of Superman 64 intended to make the most annoying game of all time, reviews should have given it a 10?

Seriously, losing the ability to play Japanese Wii games would suck. I'm hoping Nintendo leaves the thing alone as long as it doesn't allow piracy.
