The Gamecube Points Challenge
« on: April 06, 2003, 12:21:20 PM »
This is a game I call the "Points challenge". I'm doing a similar thing on the Xbox/PS2 forums (only for Xbox/PS2, not GC) and all it is, is an accurate way to find out what is good AND unique about each console. (If the mods classify it as a 'poll' then, i'm sorry, i didn't think it's a poll. It's not really a poll at all though, but it's good to have a disclaimer)

RULES OF THIS THREAD: Because I don't want this to be a fanboy arguing ground, and good debates are run with rules and not mindless screaming.

1: No fanboy craziness. no insults about how stupid I am for not knowing and no insults towards others because they happen to disagree with what you say. It only makes yourself look stupid and it ruins the chat for everyone else.

2: We're going to use a 'cancelling' idea for this. Remember in math, how 2 - 2 = 0? the 2 and the other 2 cancel out. We'll do the same thing here. You have to name things that any other of the two consoles don't have. You can't name, say, "Tony Hawk 4" because everyone has "Tony hawk 4". It cancels out.

3. Points. for each correct answer, the GC gets 1 point. if you name something that cancels out, no points. there's also a half-cancel, too. You can say MP, but it will only count for 1/2 a point, because MP is a high-end FPS and is in direct competition with Halo, another high-end FPS. they kind of cancel out. Animal Crossing would count for a full point, as something like that has never been done on a console before.

4. Basically, name the most origonal AND worthwile things about the GC. It's a fun little game, and it will hopefully being out what's really good about the Xbox instead of "MP R0x0Rz uR B0x0Rz BcUz MP R0x0Rz uR B0x0Rz".

This is probably the most accurate way to find out the best features of a system that are only available there and nowhere else.

Well, Animal Crossing, since you said that already, and Pikmin.  I assume we'll just do games, since arguing about hardware and stuff is rather pointless. . .

you can do anything except button layout on controllers. Those are too opinionated.

So we basically say what we like about each console that is specific to that console?

PS2:
Personally, the PS2 is a great showcase for some really good 3rd-party titles you just don't find anywhere else. It has some of the best RPG's around and that includes not only PS2 games but PSX, as well (I never owned a PSX, so you have no idea how much of a field day I have going out and buying all the games I missed ). The PS2 just seems to attract some erally great 3rd-party games that for some reason or another I really love. Sony's also realy maturing as a developer (god I loved Ico), and that spells out even more games I'll have to be buying soon.

XBox:
I personally don't own an XBox and really don't care to. It's not because I think Bill Gates is the reincarnation of Hitler, or because I think MS is a monopoly (some people would be surprised how many good games come out of a company that supposedly has a monopoly, like the NES or even the GB/A to an extent). The real reason is because I don't want to spend $200 on a system that I'll only buy a few games for, since that's all I want on the system. What I'm really impress by though, is the nongame parts about the XBox. While it may have made the system huge and heavy, I really like the idea of a hard drive. Quick saves, quick loads, custom sound tracks- these are all great things about that little guy. I still do think memory cards are a great addition as well- I don't want to have to bing my whole console over to a friend's house, but I definetly thing a mixture of the two is a great way to go. I also love how MS really went headstrong into this whole online thing, and it is paying off. People may say that online gaming just isn't fun, but after several hours of Unreal Championship, I'm convinced humans are 100 times more fun to play against than computers.

There you have it- I could say a lot of great things about the Gamecube, too, but that would be kind of pointless since this is a Gamecube forum.

::EDIT:: Oh, we ARE supposed to say good things about the Gamecube? Whatever- I'm sure many others will say exactly what I'm thinking. Maybe it's good that a hardcore Nintendo fan has said some good things about other consoles.

I think the point was to do the Gamecube things, and then we'd compare the points to the other forums.  Maybe it twas I who missed the point.  It'd tell us which system is better and/or has the most idiotic fanboys.

Well, that handle is great.  I love the size of everything as well.  I carry my GCN all over the place to friends houses and such and the size of the games, cards, system and such have been a huge savior for me.  Does Nintendo really count as a point, since they make such amazing first party games and Microsoft and Sony don't really offer that same support for their own console?  I won't even enter into the debate of who is more revolutionary, but I will submit the fact that many games for GCN are decidedly different from the offerings for other systems, in the vein of the style switch of Zelda and the interesting changes made to the Mario univers.  To me, this is a point.  Connectivity to the GBA also is a point fo rme, seeing as how they have both systems out anyhow, why not add in some connectivity and give gamers bonuses.

On the PS2 side, the RPG support is unparalleled, this is definatly a plus to those of us who eat sleep and drink RPGs.  The Ps2 also has an increadible amount of 3rd party support, something that will ensure your purchases validity a year or two down the road.

On the Xbox side, Xbox Live has been shown to be a very worthwhile service to allow gamers who can not get 16 people or whatever large number all together, to still play.  The Xbox also definatly has the most impressive grafics of all three systems, while this isn't the most important facet of a game, no one can deny that grafics can help determine how quickly one is drawn into a game.  Grafical power also allows for far more possiblities in game play.

I believe that is relativly non-biased.

Personally I think this whole idea is retarded, and against the rules of the board.  Nevertheless, I will participate at some point I am sure if the thread isn't closed.  I can't be bothered right now though, and I don't see where it really makes much of a difference.

I find this whole thing confusing but I might as well give it a shot. Free game with WW pre-order? does that count?
