ok what is a .rar file any way... is it some kind of zip file. and what program do i need to open said file.

Yeah, it's similar to a zip file. WinRAR seems popular, but there're a bunch of programs out ther that'll open them. Just ask google or something.

to do all of my file crap, such as .rars.

Winrar kinda sucks. 7-Zip is probably a good idea. Although I am not a good choice for opinion on this. I mostly use linux.
