I can't wait to see Snake with the Parasol and a flower on his head.
...and Snake's isn't bad, but I still vote Chris Redfield in the REmake as having the best butt in gaming.

Ewwww the day where a surprise cameo of SONIC competes for hype of Halo 3 is the day I quit being a gamer.  Then again I really dont care much about Halo 3 I never believed that Nintendo needs to steal the thunder here.  But do you hear what you are saying!?  Why would you want to compete with hype with a game like Halo 3?  Because consumers are going to buy a 360?  So instead you sway them to the Wii with a Sonic Cameo in a fighting game. . . . . ?

It's been a loooooooooooong time since I've played the original SSB.  Does anyone have a YouTube link (or similar video) of the character intros?

I suspect that the intros will NOT be present in Brawl. Just check what the intro to Subspace emissary says...

"In this world, trophies fight"

And look at the screens:

They portray the characters as being trophies before the fight begins.

So, I suspect we are stuck with trophy intros for now...

EASYCURE: I remember thinking(don't ask me why) this was a blond haired, blue eyed, chiseled athlete. Like he looked like Seigfried before he became Nightmare.

Oh ... those are what everyone was getting so worked up about?  Who cares?  I thought there were actual introductions in the first game that I somehow forgot about.  Bah.

I miss them. They were just a little bit of fanservice (the non-hotness kind) that paid homage to each character's origins. I missed them in Melee, and it'd be nice to have them back in Brawl, but Brawl is likely to feature so much of that fanservice in the single-player mode and final smashes and whatnot, that I don't think they'll be missed too much.

Ooh, I wonder what Snake's Final Smash will be...

Be cool if it was related to Metal Gear, as long as Snake exclaims that it's a "a nuclear equipped walking death mobile"....

I hope if they do that, it's ridiculously disproportional, and Snake gets to pilot it like a tank:

I like how you shopped in Mario, too.  That makes the picture much better.  You should have used the more humanistic Mario we've seen in drawings, though.

It's not necessarily competing with Halo for hype. It's offering a cheaper alternative, like when Nintendo pushed forward the release date of Majora's Mask to PS2's launch. There are a lot of people who are getting Halo 3 because everyone else is. Listen to a game store clerk push a pre-order and you'll see this happen. Then, there's always good ol' fashion peer pressure. "You're not getting Halo 3?! Why not?! Hey, Joey, isn't getting Halo 3!" That's when Joey asks his mom to get him Halo 3 for Christmas.

Online multiplayer and a 3rd party character shown in the same week is not a coincidence. WiFi and 3rd party characters are two hot topics about the game and both conveniently pop up the week before (arguably) the biggest game of the year is released. Nintendo can't beat Halo 3 hype, but they can get people more excited about their hot title.

I just threw Mario in to give the picture a sense of scale.

I also realized afterward that I was thinking of Metal Slug more than Metal Gear...

Exactly.

It was as though the characters were arriving from their own games to do battle.

GoNintendo has another shot from the Konami conference with Mario being choked by Snake it is a great pic, but more important it appears to show a completely new stage...I think.  It is either the Star Fox level we already know about, or a new one.  (Probably the old one) But go check it out.
