Virtual Console Discoveries
« on: August 18, 2007, 02:11:35 AM »
The Virtual Console is great for playing games we have memories of playing years ago, but I also love finding games I have never played, and sometimes never heard of, that are great. I thought I could start a topic where we could discuss these kinds of games, games we probably never would have played without the Virtual Console.

Because I've spent way too much on the VC (over $300) and I never owned an NES, SNES, or TG-16 and, looking back, I never had much of anything good on the Genesis besides Sonic, I've had quite a few games like this. Some of them are things I just missed, like the Donkey Kong Countries, and others being a bit obscure, like Kirby's Dream Course, a game for which I am contemplating taking hostages in order to strengthen my sequel demands.

I downloaded Adventures of Lolo a few days ago, and I absolutely love it, and would be demanding sequels for it as well if I didn't know it already had two, so I simply demand that they come to the VC.

Another, more obscure, action-puzzle game I really enjoyed was Chew Man Fu. The story is ridiculous. The characters are ridiculous. The title is ridiculous. Those things don't matter. The game is very fun.

Other things I hadn't played previously that I love include Ice Hockey, Bomberman 93, Battle Lode Runner, Wave Race 64, Gunstar Heroes, and Kid Icarus.

Anybody else find something cool they'd never known about before on the VC?

Yes. Lolo is great. And you are great for loving it. Can't wait for the sequels!

Chew Man Fu was, of course, fun, but also inspiring. Such a simple mechanic! I envy the designer... Chew Man Fu is the type of game I wish I made.

But I think one of my biggest surprises was Toejam and Earl. The game's a bit hardcore, what with permadeath and all, but I need to bring it home so my bro and I can dedicate an entire night to it or something.

I'd also say Balloon Fighter, but I actually discovered that game first in Animal Crossing, lol.

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

ToeJam and Earl is something I'll probably check out once I get some more space, as I'm currently under 100 blocks and am going to have to make some hard decisions to fit anything else in there. And Balloon Fight is spectacular, I also discovered it in Animal Crossing, it was an instant download.

I used to love playing Toe Jam and Earl with my neighbor.  We never beat it, though.
