Oh god I lost another one . . . .
« on: June 21, 2007, 03:59:04 PM »
I don't know if I just have tremendous bad luck or that I am just stupid with my handhelds but today ended another Ds's life.  I bought an original DS phat at launch and that lasted me until. . . . oh right before the DS lite was announced, then it decided to kill off its L trigger and make that button disfunctional.  Then the DSL got announced so I figured, oh well I would of gotten that one anyhow, so I  will buy one.  Then today Im lying on the ground playing EBA, NOT TOUCHING THE SYSTEM AT ALL and the system's hinge just falls down and hits the ground.  I look at my DS to see the right hinge carrying the system's led on the floor and the system in half.  Now the system is still completely functional but the whole thing is disconnected and you cant really play on it at all.

Now I know Nintendo is nice and if I called them they would probably offer me a refurbished DS for 60 dollars or so, but I am not sure if I want one yet.  Of course I want a DS its the love of my life I already have 20+ titles in my collection, but theres rumors that another DS is in the making for yet again another redesign.  Then again even if they do announce a redesign at E3 in July and have the japanese out in August/Sept do I want to import one?  DO I WANT TO WAIT THAT LONG!?  I NEED MY FREAKIN DS FIX~!  GAH GAH GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH~!  ::insert phoenix wright defeated look::

I dunno what do you guys think.  I have never had any issues with any Nintendo products before, why do I have to start now? ;  ;

Is that the problematic hinge on the DS Lite? Doesn't Nintendo fix that for free now?

I'd heard of this problem back when the DSL came out, but I would have figured it would have been sorted out by Nintendo by now...

Well he did buy it at or close to launch, so maybe his was just as faulty as those publicized but never noticed until that unfortunate day came.

If you can prove when you bought the system and act all sympathetic, I bet they'll give you a new one free of charge. Either way, it's worth a try don't you think?

Some skillful use of a hot glue gun might do the trick. You said it is still functional, so there is probably some way you could fix the hinge problem yourself...

But I would only try that if all other options have failed. Nintendo is very good with customer service, so even if it is out of warranty they may very well solve the problem anyway. Give them a try before doing what I had suggested.

Definitely call Nintendo. This happened to my fiancee's DSL which was also bought at launch. I recently had it replaced by Nintendo for no charge and they even extended my warranty another year. If you were to call today, your warranty is only expired 11 days. I'm sure they will do a swap considering the damage done to the system is due to their engineering flaw. Nintendo is always extremely helpful when I call them, I'm sure they can sympathize with you enough to swap your DS for a working model.

I did have a cracked hinge BUT that wasnt the hinge that broke oddly enough, and from what Nintendo said earlier this year, cracked hinges are just cosmetic.  I will call Nintendo today and let you guys know how it pans out.  Thanks for all the replies though, I am a little less bummed.

FIFTY DOLLARS?!?!?!?!?!?!

... I am seriously disappointed in Nintendo. What part of warranty do they not understand? Or is it just for labor? *le sigh*

Yeah it was 50 dollars + the initial shipping cost to get it there.  They said if I did not have a warranty it would be 75 + shipping which would make it 80 something dollars.  Dont get me wrong I love Nintendo and all but I wouldnt have chucked that much money when I could of just bought a new one at that point.  They ARE NOT replacing my whole ds, just the parts that I specified so its not like I would of paid 80 something dollars for a brand new refurbished DS.  But since all im paying is 50 dollars it will suffice.

I am disappointed as well. I've personally never had any of my Nintendo systems break down, but I did read stories where Nintendo's service worked much better than this... I hope their recent successes will not make them become like Sony in customer service. *sigh*

could be worse, i had a xbox a mere month over warranty and they went by the books and wanted me to pay them $120 for a new dvd drive + labor.  (at the time xbox's were $169.99 i think).

Update:  I just couldnt handle it anymore.  I decided to call Nintendo today and tell them how I felt about paying 50 dollars to repair a Ds Lite that fell apart on me.  It just was not fair~!  I did not drop the system nor throw it.  The system fell apart at the hinge, NOT BT MY DOING~!  So they will repair it for free~!

Great.. though I wonder why they told you to pay the first time.. maybe it was a misunderstanding.

Nintendo was obviously evil incarnate the first time. Glad to hear that they've mended their ways.

Actually, I do have a double standard. Nintendo games have to be better than merely good in order for me to buy them at launch. That's not to say I willingly buy bad games, but I hold Nintendo to a standard of perfection, and not just fun.

I'm surprised that Nintendo wanted to charge.  I've never had them want to charge me for anything when it was in warranty except the $5 dollars to have a replacement unit shipped out.
