The DS *could* have an analog stick added
« on: June 14, 2007, 05:29:23 AM »
I have always thought the DS would be better if Nintendo included some sort of Analog control. This was apparent to me from the first time I'd played Super Mario 64 DS on it back when I got it... the touchscreen controls for that game are useless, and the D-Pad is quite a bit trickier to handle.

But the DS hardware was finalized, so for a long time I thought we'd have to wait until the DS2 or something, but now I've been wondering if Nintendo could just release one as an add on. How I'm thinking it could work is it would be a sort of shell which latches onto the DS and plugs into the GBA slot. Wouldn't that be possible?

It would make some games a LOT easier to control.
is your sanity...

Possible yes, but it isn't really an intelligent move.  It would need to have a full set of system level calls in the SDK for it to work in an analog way.  That requires specific programming for it.  That requires convincing developers that enough users own it to make it worth developing the feature.

In the grand scheme of things, it's just not worth the trouble on a system that is already so screamingly successful.

I suppose it's technically possible, but it wouldn't be terribly convenient.  You'd lose a lot of the benefits of the DS's compact design.  There's also the usual peripheral dilemma, of course, of no games being developed for it because not everyone has it.  I really don't think analog sticks are the best way to handle analog control on a handheld, anyway.  I'm not sure what the best way is, but we need a new paradigm.  We need something compact, resilient, and just as effective.

The touch screen doesn't work primarily for two reasons.  First of all, it's not in a good position for your thumbs.  Second, it has none of the tactile feedback that an analog stick has.

The PSP's analog control gets criticized a lot, but I haven't actually used it, so I don't know what lessons to take away from it.

My favorite idea so far is something that resembles the NES Max D-pad, but is self-centering and, obviously, an analog control instead of a D-pad.  I just can't figure out exactly how to make it work.  My second favorite idea, and one that could have worked on the DS, is similar to some PC game pads I've seen that have a stick you can screw into the center of the D-pad to make a sort of digital joystick.  Make it a pressure sensitive D-pad and have the stylus double as the stick, and you've got something like an analog stick that would have worked well for the DS.  It would certainly be compact and portable (you have to carry around a stylus with the DS already), but it wouldn't be quite as good as a real analog stick.

Well, I agree that Super Mario 64 DS needed an analog stick, but I have trouble seeing where else one has been needed.  Right now, nothing comes to mind that doesn't work using the touch screen and d-pad controls in the analog stick's place.  The biggest thing I could think of is a 3rd person 3D adventure game, which, the only one I can think of is Mario 64 DS.

It sucks. Lesson: Don't make it suck.

Really, it's too small and the range of movement is limited. Try moving a dime on the edge of a table a quarter of an inch in a circle and it's something like that. What hurts the PSP more is that the D-Pad sucks immensely, even more so than the D-Pad on the Dual Shock 2 if you can believe that one.

Adding an analog stick to DS would be a bad idea. I don't even see how Nintendo could do it unless they introduced a new model, but Lite is as close to portable perfection as I've ever seen. Nintendo should think about implementing one into DS2, especially if 3rd parties ask for it, but I think DS Lite is fine the way it is.

Racing games. Indy 500 is coming to DS, that's oval racing which requires precise adjustments the dpad isn't up to.

Overall though it's just not worth it.

Personally I found after a little practice controlling Mario in 3D was pretty easy with the d-pad.
It has a learning curve of course. But so did using the analog stick for the first time.
Actually in some levels the d-pad allowed better control. Especially the Bowser levels which mostly required running back and fourth in a steady, straight line. I do agree that the touch screen controls in the game were HORRIBLE and should have been excluded though.

Analog sticks and portables just don't mix IMO.
