You can use it for homebrew too without pirating anything!

...I'm getting it for that...

R4 doesn't really play anything, it is the software which runs on it that does the playing. AFAIK it will play a variety of homebrew software

So Supercard, NinjaDS and R4 seem to be the only contenders. Anyone know of a site that compares them all. I am so broke right now, i wouldnt want to buy the wrong one (if i even buy it at all).

from what  ive studied, R4 is better if you just want to play DS Roms. it has a quick splash screen and plays ds roms well

the super card has a nicer interface, its spash screens alittle broke, u get an error everytime, but it has better homebrew support.

even though the two lists of homebrew on each review were different...sigh.. ill have to check out each homebrew and what the do now.

r4 also comes with more goodies, flash card reader and cheaper.

i think im leaning towards supercard so far, but ill keep you updated!

Is there any decent DS homebrew? TONS! There's ports of many games, like Hexen and Doom, awesome multimedia programs such as MoonShell, there's DS Organize, which essentially turns your DS into a PDA, and of course there's emulators for just about every "classic" console, up until SNES/Genesis.

The other great DS Homebrew is ScummVM, which lets you play some of the classic point&click adventure games.

Not sure we're allowed to discuss this here but I've been contemplating the fact of getting a Supercard DS One for months.
It's about 50 bucks and seems to run homebrews fine. Too bad it needs an extra microSD card (1 GB card is like $30.00).
I've been wanting to try homebrews like the one that "turns" the DS into a PDA and others, without having to flash my DS.
I'm still unsure if it's worth the money...

To be truthful, I'm getting the R4DS because that's what my dorm mate who's spearheading the DS homebrew effort has. I'm basically emulating him as much as possible.

r4ds looks nice. also, not me, but i know someone who looked at pirates bay, and i dont know who would, it would be illegal, to download about 100 free perfect ds roms, just by dropping them onto the micro sd card...

I don't know if I can post addresses but I got one and a 1 gig Micro SD card for a little over $40, shipping is free... Or was when I got mine at least. It's great. I love being able to use my DS as a portable FTP server.

Heh.

As for homebrew. Most of the big homebrew software now use a sort of plug-in system. You download the main program and then a sort of plug-in extra file that tells it how to run on your specific card. The R4 and the M3 are basically the same thing though so if something's compatible with one, it's compatible with the other. And there are TONS of homebrew and freeware games out there for it.

I seen some 1gb MicroSD cards on Amazon for less than half that price. They are cute little things that are about the size of your finger nail, and usually come with an adapter that lets you use then in regular SD slots. Not real bad....

As for using the DS into a PDA, I did get one of those adapters for that purpose and I was quite disappointed. You get a virtual keyboard to type things out with a stylus, but it is very frustratingly slow. You can use it for web browsing in text mode (the DS doesn't have enough RAM for a modern browser), and there is some programs you can use to chat on IRC and MSN and so on... but over all I'd say this is really a neat trick you can impress your friends with, but it really isn't that useful for much else.

By the time you've purchased a DS, the adapter, and the cards you could almost get a real PDA and a mini keyboard. I mean, if the DS did come with a minikeyboard or had a usb slot to plug one in, then it would be very awesome as a PDA, but as it is it isn't really. Probably better off to get the Opera browser if you do need to use your DS for web browsing because that's better than any homebrew app right now.

It only has 4mb of RAM (if I'm not mistaken). The Opera browser adds more RAM by plugging an expansion into the GBA slot. Otherwise the DS just couldn't handle it...

So with those homebrew adapters there are some browsers available right now, but AFAIK they are all text based ones. That's not too bad for reading text and stuff, but don't expect to be watching videos on Youtube with a homebrew browser.

I have a SuperCard, but it's the old GBA style (still boots DS homebrew of course), it uses standard SD cards. I believe it was about $40 when I got it a year or so ago, including shipping.
