Etrian Odyssey
« on: September 05, 2006, 11:28:17 AM »
So I just compiled all the media and stuff for this game and posted it on the main page.

It looks pretty freaking sweet as far as RPGs go.  It seems to be a mix of 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds as well as some beautifully illustrated painted backgrounds.  I really can't figure it out.

There is a ton of talent behind the game as well.  The battle system is supposedly similar to the Shin Megami Tensei games which I haven't played.  Someone explain it! =P

Also, you don't get maps in the game.  Instead you use the stylus and a graph paper like system on the bottom screen to plot your own maps.  Wee.

Supposed to be out in English early next year.

Design my own maps? lol, that's so wicked! The character artwork is cool too, and the in-game pics were cool too.

I really love the art style, and depending on when exactly it comes out, a dungeon crawler may be the best way to waste some time...

Holy crap thats awesome.  The "make your own map" aspect made this game go from Wanted to Needed.  Effing sweet.

Not crazy about dungeon crawlers, but I am crazy about the artwork...there are too many RPGs coming!  Contact and FFIII and the Magical Vacation sequel practically already have my money, not to mention DQM: Joker, Dawn of Mana, and the new Tales game.

Edit: Oh wait, I see...so the maps aren't necessarilly random, they just aren't pre-mapped out.  With the game offering the tools to draw the maps, that's actually kind of a neat feature.  It's a pretty cool use for the touch screen.  Darn, this game just got a lot more interesting.

On a Nintendo system, that's a welcome problem.. Although I must say that only Contact and Tales (and maybe this) interest me.

AMAZING. I AM BUYING THIS GAME.

WHY YOU ASK? THIS IS WHY. DUNGEON TRAINING.

Atlus is making comics on the website joking about the game and stuff!!! OMG! They just called the game a relic and too hardcore in the first three panels, then they compare it to Brain Training in the last two!!! ZOMG!

And... there's MORE...

The comic is pretty funny, but it's attempt to make dungeon crawling sound good fails to me.  'Specially on a handheld system.  Sorry Etrain, you look very cool.

I hear the game is excruciatingly hard as ****.  On a separate note I think that chick looks a lot like Yggdra from Yggdra Union.  Actually the first time I saw the character art I was like is this a sequel to Yggdra Union?

I have it on pre-order.  I usually like the games Atlus brings over.  This and Odin Sphere.

This game is vicious.  It's like Dragon Quest in some ways, but only it doesn't say thanks afterwards.  Other than that it's actually a pretty decent game, just a slow gave to level up because you get very little exp from battle, and money is begot from selling enemy drops.

anyone know how retiring your character works. like where you build them up and throw 'em away to get a superior version of that character.

oh, the game is lots of fun.

So nitsu would you give this a thumbs up for this game? I was interested in the concept but I don't know if I should pick it up or wait if I can find it cheaper (yes I know its an atlus title)

I give it a thumbs up because it's fun.  I am only on the 6th floor, the second stratum.  I had to start over because for some reason my saved game became corrupt and wouldn't load.  Other than that the game is fun.

Also you don't have to "draw" you own map, the game has a auto map feature that will auto-map for you where you walk.  If you want to add the outlines and other stuff you have to do that on your own.

Holy crap.  I was just talking about this game and I didn't realize I made a thread for it so long ago.  Now I may have to pick it up because I told myself to!
