Capcom Speaks on Downloadable Wii Games

Capcom is ready to offer them but is waiting for Nintendo to get its act together.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13478

Talking in a Q&A with game industry news site Gamasutra, Capcom's Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Research Christian Svensson let loose a little bit of his company's plans for the future.  The discussion touched on downloadable games for all platforms, including what it will take to get it to happen on Wii.

Svensson first explains that Wii downloadable games have "some file size limitations that don't dovetail well with what we've currently got on PS3 and Xbox 360."  This would seem to indicate that Wii Ware games need to be much smaller than those on other services, which would make sense considering the Wii's relatively small on-board storage space.  That doesn't mean Capcom is shying away from the Wii, however.  It wants to bring games like Street Fighter and Puzzle Fighter to the system and it believes the Wii has "a great audience for [that] type of content."

So what is it waiting for?  Nintendo to finalize the progress.  Here's a question and answer that shouldn't surprise anyone waiting to see Nintendo ramp up the online functionality in Wii:

Gamasutra: But downloadable original content is possible? It's been hinted that it's possible, but it's still not coming yet.

Svensson: It's possible. I think you'll have to talk more to Nintendo about that. It's not a technical limitation thing, though. We're certainly going to be able to deliver. It's really more of them getting their process in place for approvals and their pipeline in place.

One way to avoid waiting for Nintendo to setting up something official could be to make original SNES games.  It's not like CD quality audio or FMV or modern 3D graphics are really that practical for a downloadable game.  There's kind of cartridge-esque limit no matter what.  So instead make a new SNES game and release it through the VC.  By 2D graphics standards the SNES doesn't appear dated.

Edit:  Shoot! The second I posted this I thought of a limitation: motion control.  If the game is made for the SNES it can't really make full use of the remote.  So it's still a possible solution but it limits games to using traditional controls.

Well, I've thought of that before, Ian, and I agree, that's a way to push out content if Nintendo were limiting things only to the VC, but I think restrictions like that are really unnecessary, and in the long run, it may be better to wait and release a game with looser limitations, but your approach is a good one.

Thank you. I was worried that since they banned my sig, people would start thinking that you were me.

God, in my dream of dreams Nintendo sells NES dev kits to consumers for $100 and lets us make our own VC games.

Does anyone else find it laughable that Capcom considers Puzzle Fighter to be "original content"?

I'd like to see ports of arcade games on the VC rather than console ports of arcade games, if you know what I mean!

You mean in regards to that "Last Battle" game or whatever it was that you like so much?

But yes, the Wii is hurting for MAME. You have to figure that so many former arcade companies could bring their 20 year old games back from the dead this way.

Not to mention more arcade BEMUPS like Turtles, Simpsons, Dungeons and Dragons (both games), etc.

Heck, the Wii actually could pull off those arcade games with more than four players, too.

luckily for Nintendo storage space isn't really an issue a 4gb sd card is now $89

also iv seen mini usb 8gb external hard-drives for as low as 69. All nintendo really needs to do is add usb hard drive support through an os update and its set.
