Website Design for Wii
« on: December 19, 2006, 06:06:53 AM »
In preparation for the Opera browser, which is to be released in three days, here is a great source on how to make your site compatible with surfing on your TV. It isn't comprehensive, but it's a good start, especially with the interface design.

I'm curious as to how PGC will look on there; is there a special redesign in the works? I know we have PGCPocket, which apparently works with the DS browser, but any plans for Wii?

You can also post more guidelines or help regarding this.

As I mentioned in the other topic, when I revamped VGMaps.com on January 1, 2006, I had no idea that the Wii would have Wii channels.  By coincidence the Wii interface and the pages on my site are white, and on my front page in particular I have clickable rectangles with rounded corners, just like the Wii Channels!    I look forward to clicking away with my Wii Remote!

However, some pages (like my map directory) have small text.  Due to the resolution it will probably appear bigger on a TV screen but I could probably optimize it a lot more.  More big clicky things!

The thing is, I've noticed that things look different in some cases between different browsers (between IE and Opera, for example).  I haven't really made an effort to ensure uniformity across browsers.  But if my site looks a particular way in a PC Opera browser, will I expect it to look the same (just bigger) on a Wii Opera browser?

I guess it would be helpful to know the Wii Opera browser's resolution to get an idea of what an ideal width should be, for images and tables and the like.

I've been working on a updated theme for my site that will make it Wii friendly.

This was ripped from the Wii Store page when people were able to run it in Firefox a couple weeks ago:
/* Limit page to 640 by 480 (NTSC TV resolution) */
/* Note: PAL resolution is 640 by 528 */
body {
/*width: 608px; height: 456px; */

Doesn't Opera for Wii have a navigation bar on the bottom? Is it always there when browsing pages? If it is, then the height will have to be reduced since 480/456 pixel measures are based off a full screen.

Of course, that only matters if you don't want your page to have a scrollbar.
Thanks for listening.
