I don't like the idea that Arika has 2 transformations very much, seems odd and too DBZ-ish to me.... but kudos to them for actually inabilitating the most powerful characters from the get go....interesting ep nevertheless...

I wonder, will the 4th series be named Mai VHiME?

Two transformations = more plot devices to vary her strength. It's just a visual representation of her getting her full power. Anime characters are never constant in strength, the protagonist is always growing in power so he can surprise the bad guys by coming back from a near loss by using his newfound powers.

And hell, the lamest part about Mai Otome wasn't the two transformations, it was how they got turned from masters who draw their power from a "host" (that dies instead of them) into slaves who live and die along with their master. I guess strong women don't go down with the Japanese otaku very well, they want some big weakness on them so they're more subservient.

Now I'm rambling...

I thought that what Miyu did at the end of MO freed them (and thus got rid of the master/slave restriction and they could "choose their own future" now...)

Yes but it seems to be back in 2, at least we did see Mai and Arika demanding the activation from their masters.

at least seems interesting that Arika can't use the overpowered Zwei mode if she and Mashiro aren't "synched"....

Pfft. Speed is relative, an anime character is always just as fast as he/she needs to be. Running across the city in ten seconds flat? No probalo. Chasing an evil dude that's sneering and retreating for now? Not a chance.

And hell, she was in space, she can reach any speed she wants if she just accellerates long enough. It's not like there's friction to slow her down.

yeah, I know, but the Mai universe seems to be pretty consistent overall (they are absurdly oerpowered and all, but they don't gain and lose abilities as the plot needs it...... but we're talking about Sunrise here, and after GSD, ANYTHING could happen....), and the fact that everyone (except Natsuki) were impressed by her speed means that she was indeed faster than she used to be (in her incomplete Souten no Seigyoku robe).... and she's suppousedly stronger, but that won't be noticeable

in any case, I believe the reason she has 2 transformations now is so that she doesn't have to gain a new robe at the end..... unless they plan to give her the Mashiro naru Kongouseki, which wouldn't make much sense :?
