Yes I got mine today in a Hastings store of all places, and yes, I have yet to take it out of the box.

I did both firmware updates (one and then one after it finished) and no brickage.

The cause of the problem

It seems the main niggle (albeit only for an isolated few) appears to be an issue with the machine's firmware. Nintendo originally announced plans to release the console alongside a start-up disc including important firmware updates it didn't have time to pre-load onto the system prior to launch. However, someone clearly worked overtime at the Wii factory because the majority of consoles did ship with the latest firmware installed, therefore not requiring a separate disc. While this was good news for most gamers however, those who bought early production models still requiring the disc were left with a console that didn't work properly.

Ok I have dial-up so I'm not getting any firmware updates or any online anytime soon, how do I know if my Wii is one of the few that will break if given the update? It would really suck if a year down the line I get broadband and my system breaks and takes all those save files with it; also the warranty will have expired, forcing me to get a new one and start all over again.

There is a version number in the settings in the upper right hand corner. My version is 2.0U if you have something older you should call Nintendo and see if it is that one.

And the DS lite cracks, and basically.....every single problem ever to arise. Noone beats Nintendo when it comes to customer service.

Just curious - do you need your retail receipt to take advantage of Nintendo's repair policy?  Cause I can't find mine anywhere, and now I'm all paranoid that mine's going to brick.

As long as your Wii was purchased legally then everything will be fine since whenever a major electronic appliance or whatever is sold, the serial number then is electronically to the manufacter of the thing. So Nintendo all they might ask you is what is your serial number and what option you want to do.
