Red Steel: new movie
« on: October 10, 2006, 07:28:28 AM »
Since the old thread has dropped off the page, I thought it was time for a new one, featuring the new 10-minute JeauxFrance video. I am officially once gain excited for this game. Though a lot of people don't seem to like it. Beats me.

I was going to get it at launch anyway, but this makes me even more excited about it.. At the September event, most impressions said that the controls were improved; hopefully it's fully ironed out by the time it launches. It's a shame that Ubisoft wants to churn it out at launch; a few more months would have done wonders towards polishing the controls and the features (especially multiplayer)..

Yeah, but if they didn't churcn it out at launch, the Wii would be useless to me. It's the only game I'm interested in at the moment.

I really, really hope that this footage isn't indicative of the game's load times T_T that was awful

But Im glad to finally see a non-shaking cursor like it was in E3, it was frustrating to see all those previous footage. Its not just this particular game, because is not exactly of my liking (although I might get it), but with the controls in general for the console.

It would be nice to see someone playing in a normal, medium-sized TV though, like most of us will end up playing these games.

Fully agree. It looks great, but that loading time is looking dreadful. I hope that is fixed by launch, although I kind of doubt that it will be.

I wish they'd implement a control style similar to MP3's new expert controls.  Rotating your view looks pretty clumsy.

I heard somewhere that the longer loading is due to the demo units, so chances are good that the problem will not occur on the final hardware. BTW I think Red Steel proves that the Wii is indeed more powerful than GC, because there is no doubt in my mind that GC would not be able to output visuals like that at 60fps.

I have a feeling you can up the sensitivity for either the horizontal plane or vertical plane (like COD3). So you can spin real fast be looking up and down is still nice and slow.

So I don't forsee a problem.

I read at IGN (yeah, yeah...) that the version of Red Steel they played at 30fps, and occasionally dipped below that...

Anyone who tells you they can eyeball 30fps is not just a liar, but a bad one.

What.  It's not that difficult to distinguish a 30 fps game from a 60 fps game.  Personally it takes me a while to see it (and the two games should probably be side by side :P), but a well trained nerd eye can detect it.  So nyah.

The videos looke pretty cool.  Load times suck but whatever, there's still a chance they'll get better.  The gunplay looked pretty cool from what I saw, it's just that the sword fighitng still sucks =(

i don't care if it is 30 or 60 fps as long as the fps stay constant and doesn't dip down and affect gameplay.

I really hope they announce some kind of control sensitivity sliders too.

What. It's not that difficult to distinguish a 30 fps game from a 60 fps game.
On a television refreshing at 30 Hz? I know, they didn't see it on a CRT, but my point is that the difference between 30 and 60 is subtle enough that most people hardly notice refreshing on their TV, if they do at all. (85, Hz, by the way, is the very upper limit of framrate perception, and then only if you are alternating bright and dark frames, as you never would be in a video game). I'm sure trained nerds can tell the difference between 30 and 60. I'm also sure that when they say 30 it could be 20 or 45.

Anyway, about those videos: the turning seems way slower than it should be. Load times do seem excruciating, but fortunately not that frequent. Sword fights seemed interesting when the demoer had them, pretty boring when less experienced players were at the helm.

My understanding is that sensitivity changes the speed at which the reticule moves, not the rate of rotating.  But besides the turning rate, I like how your view tends to center on the reticule when using the expert controls in MP3.  That way you don't have to aim all the way to the edges of the screen just to make minor adjustments to your view rotation.

It's odd that the load times are so long in the video - Ubisoft themselves said that they would be practically nonexistant recently..

I have a feeling that the load speeds are because of them using Demo units or something. It would  make no sense for it to have slow loading when released.

This game is looking great.  The shooting and sword fighting all looked like fun.
A couple of people that played it seemed to be very used to normal fps.  Many times they moved the screen until the enemy was in the center before they shot.  I wanted to scream at them that they don't have to do that.  People used to the current controls will have to get used to the new control so I expect some bad vibes from from these people at first but for them to change their mind after some time with it.

Now about turning, I heard that if you tilt the controler in the direction you are turning it moves faster.  I forget where I heard this from but does anyone else remember it?  I like the idea.

That French guy showed off the game at E3, and cut me off before I got to the time-stop/targetting part.
