Call for Amateur Art
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:43:45 PM »
My friend Taylor and I are starting a quasi-company to provide free PR services to a great, unknown musician who also happens to be a friend of mine.  Taylor and I have decided to call our "company" Prairie Dog PR.  I'm not sure where he got the idea, but it sounds okay to me.  He asked me to post on the forums and see if anyone could draft up a neat logo for us to use.  I'll probably ask a couple of non-PGC friends too, but I know there are some talented people here so I figure it's worth a shot.

I think I'll make a Prairie dog/Perrin Kaplan hybrid.

I did a summer of work in Badlands Nat'l Park (South Dakota) as an interpretational ranger. I was so affected by the experience that my design style was changed forever (I'm a graphic designer). I happened to draw a vector prairie dog for one of my projects, because there're prairie dog towns all over in the park. I'll see if I can't morph him into a logo of sorts.

I think I see how the name makes sense, and it entails a little Prairie Dog trivia...

First, they're the little guys on the prairie (like, you guys are the "little guys" in PR – right now, at least), but... they have an amicable relationship with the big guys of the prairie – bison* (best case scenario, you have lots of high-powered contacts in the industry!). If there's something they're really excited about, they do something called a "jump-yip" where they throw their front paws up in the air and do this high-pitched squealing (you guys getting word out about this talented musician). This oftentimes cues the whole community to likewise do a vicarious jump-yip too (others getting excited from your info about the musician). It's really fun to see. They also bark to alert others of various threats from birds of prey or land predators. The prairie dogs do one thing that you shouldn't do, though: if there's trouble, they go right into their holes to hide. You need to stick by your clients in trying times!

It might be a week or two before I can get to it, but I'll post it when it's done.

* bison wallows – where they roll around and create little patches of vegetation-free ground – promote new grass growth, which the prairie dogs prefer to eat.

Well, Jonny, I finally had some time to get to the logo. There are a couple versions of it...

• a full-blown signature version in color
• an accompanying medallion version with no text, also in color (could use for the back of a business card, or as a "pop" graphic in a collateral piece, for example)
• a black/white signature version for small and/or 1-color applications
• and an accompanying b/w medallion

See below.

If you don't want to use the logo, no worries. It was at least fun to make!

If you would like to use it, I can provide the vector versions of these files, editable in Adobe Illustrator (and infinitely-scaleable). All I ask is that somewhere (for example, on a Web site if you have one eventually, or a brochure if you ever do that), you include a little "legal" line giving me credit for the design. Otherwise, you're free to do with it as you please. Planetgamecube has been my main source of Nintendo news for the last 5+ years, and you guys have done tons of work keeping it top-notch, not to mention free. Think of this as a little "thank you."

Ok, enough with the cheese! Just let me know if you want the art.

Looks fantastic!  A million thanks!  I'll show it to my business partner and see if he approves.

Oh, wow, those are really good.

Though I wonder....if one were to make one slight modification....

I'm sorry

... You know, sometimes you push a design to the edge, but can't manage to flick it over into the realm of "awesome." You've done just that, wandering, and I thank you for it.

LOL.  Well I showed the art (sans Perrinhead) to Taylor, and he said "amazing".  So I'm sure we'll be using it very soon.  Unfortunately our client is currently taking a break from touring, so that's going to delay the real start to our business.  But we'll be ready when the time comes!
