How to type on the Wii.
« on: October 01, 2006, 09:42:02 AM »
So far, we have seen typing on the Wii (like for the name in the Mii channel) via a soft keyboard, which, needless to say, is somewhere between slow and painful for any extended amount of text. Admittedly, it is faster than using a soft keyboard with a d-pad (i.e. how most current console games do text entry), but it is still not great, especially if you want to be able to leave notes on the Wii message board or do any kind of online text chat. On the other hand, the WiiMote is precise enough to use Dasher, a text entry method designed for use with an eye tracker, but works well with a mouse (or WiiMote) as well. I wonder if Nintendo will support this type of text entry. Depending on how they designed the soft keyboard, it may be trivial to add an option to switch between the two. (Dasher obviously has a small learning curve or, at least, would scare the common non-gamer... and probably even some gamers.)

At first, trying that out convinced me that simple gesture recognition would be far better. But it did get better, although capitals are a pain. Interesting thought.

If nintendo should release a keyboard, I say it must be wireless and it should be small (there are many keys on a keyboard that are unnecessary for console use).

If they don't allow a USB keyboard, they should allow Graffiti..

I think Graffiti has a fee associated with it.  Hence why MS doesn't support it on Pocket PC and Tablet PC.
