Import Gamecube on Wii
« on: September 21, 2006, 06:38:06 PM »
Hope this isn't repetitious but will it be possible, out of the box or with the Action Replay, to play JPN/EU Gamecube games on the Wii? I just bought an HDTV and I want (more like need) to play the Cube in 480P so it doesn't look like ass, but I don't want to spend an extra $60+ on component cables if I can definitely play my imported games on the Wii.

No one knows yet for sure, but all Gamecube games are region coded, just like the system. Perhaps the Wii will simply "overlook" this feature, but I doubt it. There's a good chance the Action Replay or FreeLoader won't work either, due to the slot loading system.
I think it says on the box, 'No Hispanics' " - Jeff Green of EA

hmm has Nintendo officially stated the price for their component cables?  One of my TV's take it but i havent ever found GCN component cables for cheap.  I'm thinking about getting one but $60 i dunno, thats more than a game.

Brandogg: Slot loading won't stop the Freeloader per se, the Gamecube does notice the lid being opened but it doesn't complain about that (unlike the PS2 where you have to add a few metal bits to make sure it thinks the lid is still closed). Nintendo has the option of breaking it but they aren't forced to do so. They definitely won't disable the region coding since even the Wii merely gives the OPTION to release "region 0" games and publishers would complain if the region coding was removed (partially because e.g. the European publisher would have to compete with the US publisher. While I'd like to see that to get those EU publishers off their fat, lazy asses they obviously don't).

Damn, this is a really frustrating situation. I guess it's probably smarter for me just to wait even if it won't allow me to play my imports. I have to Gamecubes anyway, one hooked up in my bedroom to a regular TV and one hooked up in my living room to my HDTV. I will just always have to play the imports on a regular TV if the Wii won't support the action replay or ignore region. If anyone figures anything out, post away.
