Wii: The most visible logo
« on: October 25, 2006, 08:49:32 AM »
Yesterday I went into Gamestop because my roomate wanted to get the new pso. Anyways I was looking at comign soon boxes, you know what some of those boxes were multiplatform and pretty much had every logo on them. I niticed the Wii logo sticks out more than any other logo on the box.

Yep.

One of the benefits to having a name that short is that you can have the entire name and logo in large print because it takes up the same amount of room.

I noticed the same thing when I saw a commercial for Marvel Ultimate Alliance on TV last night.  Granted, I was looking for it because I was curious to see if it would be the first time I'd see Wii mentioned on TV, but the logo was so big and stark that it stuck out clearly from the rest.

GoNintendo has a link to an article about this, but you don't really see the word "Nintendo" accompanying the Wii logo very much.

Nintendo mentioned in some press material that they didn't want the Nintendo name hanging on the Wii, much like Microsoft doesn't want their name on the Xbox.

That makes since, since the Nintendo name to the mainstream over the last several years has been uncool.  So just having the name Wii will prevent people from getting those uncool feelings since they dont have to say or read Nintendo.

Which will allow the Wii to be cool to the mainstream audience.

I recently heard an argument that name brands don't mean much for video game consoles - not for more than a generation or two, anyway.  The supporting evidence was:

- Atari (lost to Nintendo)
- Nintendo (lost marketshare every generation in spite of having best brand name)
- Game Boy (awful-sounding brand name, became biggest system brand in video game history)
- DS (growing rapidly in spite of losing huge Game Boy brand)
- PSP (failing in spite of huge Playstation brand)

Edit: Sega also fits in there somewhere, although I don't think it was ever quite as big as Nintendo or Playstation.

Double-Edit: Wii makes a great logo, this was the thing I really liked about the name when it launched.
That's my opinion, not yours.
