K_Icyfire, I'll put it nice and simple for you: Nintendo cannot do it in this generation.  They have three years of sales to make up in 2 years?  It is simply not happening.  I'm not going to comment on next generation though, anything could happen.

I think its pretty obvious that Nintendo GC is being used to lay the groundwork for their next system.  By that, I mean they are aggressively pursuing deals with 3rd parties and getting exclusives to go with their great stable of 1st and 2nd party games.  If they can launch with a Zelda, a new RE and maybe a Final Fantasy Chronicals sequel, I think they'd be primed for a huge comeback.  Throw in maybe a Metal Gear, and they could do it.  The problem is, which companies will be willing to make exclusives for the new Nintendo when they're staring at the huge user base of the PS2-3?  They're going to have open up the wallets and make it happen to have a shot at being #1.

Its still possible for Nintendo to take the top, but will they? Probably not. I can see Nintendo at around #2, beating the PS2 will be tough. But who cares about sales, IMO Nintendo is better then Sony, and produces way better games. Sure there are some cool PS2 games, but  I would much rather have a Nintendo, I mean Nintendo brought up the original gaming phrase. "Dude lets go play some Nintendo!" Now when do you ever here someone say "Dude lets go play some Sony!"

Actually, if Nintendo gets their system out first, that'll be a big advantage.  Most Xbox and PS2 owners aren't really loyalists, and they'll just get the next gen system that comes first.  I've heard Sony has been having problems with the PS3, and that it may be a year late (not sure if this is old news, or even true, though), so the system will be just as powerful as the Nintendo system, but out a lot later.

A good starting line-up is also important.  I'd suggest a Metroid game, since Prime was so popular, a mature game to attract the horomonal preteens that want them, a Super Smash Brothers just cuz it rocks, and another Nintendo franchise, probably Mario (and perhaps a new franchise).  Also make it back compatible.

Well, Ill put in my feelings.

I am a Nintendo loyalist and have had all their consoles on launch date (Except the Gameboy's), Im not really interested in portable gaming.  Anyway, with the next generation Nintendo is going to have to sell me right from the start.  With my friend having a PS2 and all the games, yes they dont always look as good but some are really fun, I may just go for a PS3 first and get the new Nintendo when the price drops OR when Mario and Zelda gets released.  In my eyes, Nintendo MUST sell the next system even before its released.  Nintendo should NEVER be launched without a Mario headlining. NEVER.  Nintendo will have to start showing off their release titles before the system is even released.

Why should I buy a Nintendo right away if all the 3rd party support is going to Sony AND no main Nintendo titles (Metroid, Zelda, Mario) will be available at its initial release?

Good question huh.  This is the question Nintendo needs to focus on in the next console war otherwise even its hardcore base fans will politely exit the room.

Not in this generation...

advertising more (yes, fire whoever is in charge of advertising and hire someone who knows what they're doing!)
ship next-generation console earlier or at the right time of other competitior's release of their n-g consoles.
Like Odinfire mentioned, launch Mario game at the start of the big N's next big console.  As well as a very solid mature game like Metroid or Metal Gear and of course Smash Bros!

i guess it doesnt matter that much anyways.  oh well Nintendo should sell more with alot more advertising and more connectivity thingamajingys with the gba and gamecube.  look at the trend, unlock hidden characters, levels, new suits, then unlock the original games for NES by linking and now hook play your gba games with some sort of connectivity thing.  what next? can't wait.
