DS Download Service
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:27:26 AM »
Awe yeah!

Nintendo announces download service for DS

"Nintendo announced new wireless features for its DS portable video game player Thursday, including a free service that will let consumers beam game demos and other content directly to the device.

"Beginning in late March, the company plans to deploy electronic kiosks at thousands of U.S. retailers including Best Buy and GameStop."

It sucks a little that the downloads die once the system is turned off. But it's a really novel idea for stores... bring your OWN DS in and start demoing the new games.
"wow."

They finally officially announced it.  Been waiting for something like this for a while.

Aw, crap.

I mean, this is nice...I guess...maybe.  Well, it's something.

I guess I was expecting or hoping the announcement was going to be a service to download GB/GBC games to your DS.

Then Revolution + DS = potential ability to play nearly every game ever made for a Nintendo system!

(Except those for the Virtual Boy, Pocket Pikachu and Game & Watches...)

Man, don't complain.  This is awesome news, and it doesn't rule out that possibility (of GB/GBC downloads).  If anything, it's more likely.

I've been using that pretty much since the DS is out.

You're right.  It's like I'm pulling an Ian.  J/k.  Kinda.  It is kind of a downer if I see a good thing as "oh, but they didn't do this as well".  Like the parent that sees a 98% on a report card and is, like, "what happened to the other 2%?", etc.  Anyway...

They've done this in Japan, haven't they?  Is it successful there?  I imagine it must be, if it entices people to try games that they can buy pretty much on the spot.

(Think the Revolution will have demos?  Perhaps its hard-drive-of-sorts is too small for most games, but hopefully they'll have demo discs.  I still subscribe to Nintendo Power (ever since Jan. 1991, with only a 25-month hiatus) in the hopes that they'll have demo discs.  They didn't for the GameCube, save for the Metroid 2: Echoes demo disc, but maybe Rev. demo discs will be packed with it?  Maybe?  Or maybe an access code that'll let you go on the Internet and download DS demos (assuming you have the Wi-Fi Connector, if it can be done that way at all)...)

That's a cool idea.  Though I figure if they do that they would wait for the Rev to launch and then tie the two services together.

All in all it's pretty cool. The voice chat in between MP matches is sweet. I wish MKDS had that.

Hahah! I can't wait until we have "Balls Matches" where everyone only fights in morphball mode the entire game.

"So, balls, everyone? Balls?"

Cute.  But in Metroid Prime: Hunters, characters other than Samus (and I think Spire and someone else) do things other than roll into balls.  One guy is a top, one guy splits in half, another guy becomes a worm, that sort of thing.  I don't think that's really a spoiler, but I'll play it safe.
