Gamecube and Gameboy Advance?
« on: January 09, 2006, 10:55:10 AM »
I'm wondering if anyone can give me information on an accessory for the Gamecube that will allow me to use my Gameboy Advance games. I was told there is an accessory to do this, if so what is the cost and where should it be available? Hopefully someone can help me. Even what it looks like?

Thank You

Err, there's actually two different accessories that will allow this.  First, there's the (better) GameCube GameBoy Player.

This unit attaches to the bottom of your GCN and plays nearly all GameBoy, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance titles with no problems.  It runs about $50 new.

Then there's Datel's Advance Game Port.

This little doo-hicky runs about $35 - however, it only plays GameBoy Advance games - no retro gaming on this.  On a plus side, it's a little easier to disconnect and hook up to a different 'cube.  I've heard it has some sound quality issues on GBA titles, however.

UncleBob FTW.

I'd like to add (even though it was implied by UB) that the Game Boy Player is an official Nintendo product while the Datel Advance Game Port is not.  So if you're leery of third-party products (which you should be) go for the GBP.

Yeah, vudu's right, the GameBoy Player is the *official* product, while the Game Port isn't.  While I don't have the Game Port (I'm waiting to get one *cheap*, just for 'collecting' reasons), I can say that I'm mucho happy with my GameBoy Player.

I should also note that the GameBoy Player features a link port that allows you to link to other GameBoys/GameBoy Colors/Game Boy Advance/SP/other GameBoy Players - or even other GameCubes (for connectivity purposes).  Also, with the GameBoy Player, if you want, you can use a GCN Controller or, with a GBA/GCN cable, you can use a GBA/SP as a controller.  The Advance Game Port does not allow any of this.

I'll tell you the biggest difference between the two, the Game Boy Player is actual GBA hardware in it's entirety, Datel's Advance Game Port is a GBA emulator and while I've heard it gets the job done, it's no substitute for actual GBA hardware.

Well, on a semi-related note, my new best friend from over at CAG managed to pick me up one of the Advance Game Ports on sale at a TRU that is going out of business ()...  $3.50 for the unit and $4 shipping - so I had to bite!

Once I get it in, I'll test it out and let anyone who cares know my opinion on it.

Really, I kinda picked it up in hopes that it'll work with the Revolution in one of its memory card ports...

Ack.. do not even mention the datel player as a possibility.  It is a total piece of junk.  It doesn't even run all GBA games, and those that it does run, they often play in slow motion!  Avoid it at all costs!

I got the crappy Datel "Advance Game Port" in the mail today.

I call it crappy because I can't even use the thing.  I pop the disc in, plug the "port" into the memory card slot, turn on my GCN and, after a few cycles of the disc (with the occasional loud clicking noise) the GCN acts as if there's nothing in the unit.

Datel's customer service is getting an angry phone call tommrow.

Yay!  After tons of Datel's crappy customer service (It's impossible to get ahold of someone on their phone lines and no one answers e-mails...) I finally got someone to say that it *might* be the disc and they're shipping me a new one.

Oddly enough, the guy, while trying to troubleshoot, asked what the Model Number of my GCN was (DOL-001 or DOL-101)...  I wonder if the AGP doesn't work on DOL-101's.

Wow.

I got my disc today (finally...)  I played around with the Datel thing a bit tonight - I must say, while it does have some neat aspects to it, overall I wouldn't reccomend it over the GameBoy Player *at all*.

While it does have some neat points to it (expect kind-of-a Mini Review/comparison when I get some more time), overall it's not worth more than $5 and was *not* worth the effort I put into getting the damn thing and getting it to work.

The Datel device only runs GBA games - no GB Classic or GBC games on this puppy.

However, I've often wondered if the Datel unit plays the GameBoy Advance Videos... I'll eventually have to actually *buy* one to find out.

What?  GBA can't play DK Land?  This is the first I'm hearing of this.
