Over 3 million units sold worldwide.

NINTENDO DS TOPS 200,000 UK SALES

Nintendo's new hand-held goes from strength to strength

26 April 2005 - Following its record breaking UK launch of 87,000 units in two days, the Nintendo DS continues its phenomenal sales success with UK gamers having snapped up over 200,000 units of the dual screen handheld console in just over six weeks since launch.

Games sales also continue to be outstanding with Super Mario 64 DS and WarioWare Touched! proving to be firm favourites. There are over 16 titles now in stores and this initial success will be followed by the release of more great games including Yoshi Touch & Go from Nintendo on 6th May, Need for Speed Underground 2 from EA on 27h May and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith from Ubisoft also in May, along with many more to follow throughout 2005.

The success in the UK follows in the wake of exceptional sales in the US and Japan where over 3 million Nintendo DS units have been sold worldwide since launch.

David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK said:  'The launch of Nintendo DS in the UK continues to be an unprecedented success; Gamers new and old have embraced the Nintendo DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have handheld console! Nintendo set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, and we have certainly accomplished this.'

James Honeywell, UK Product Manager for Handheld Consoles said:,  "We are extremely pleased with the success of the Nintendo DS and will continue to watch with excitement as it fulfils its obviously huge potential. It is great to see that British gamers, like their Japanese and American counterparts, can recognise a revolutionary new console when they see it!"

The Nintendo DS launched in the UK on Friday 11th March supported by a huge range of first and third party launch titles including Super Mario 64 DS, Wario Ware Touched, Polarium, Pokémon Dash, The Urbz: Sims in the City, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf, Project Rub and Zoo Keeper among many others.

In recognition of its technological achievements, the Nintendo DS has received the Edge magazine 'Hardware of the Year Award', as well as rave reviews across the UK, showing that the Nintendo DS has already delivered on its ambitious promise to bring a new gaming experience to gamers.

The Nintendo DS is available in the UK for around £99. Software is available from around £29 and £19 depending on the game.

We may be complaining about rushed/not enough games, but it's really tough to argue that Nintendo made the wrong decision by launching early.  With the PSP release for Europe way away in September, Nintendo's position is looking pretty darn strong.

Actually, I'm not sure Europe needs to complain.  They're getting Another Code in June.

I'm really hoping that the U.S. is getting it at the same time and it just hasn't been announced yet...

Don't count on it.  DK King of Swing doesn't even have a date here in the U.S.

Look at the Europe launch titles.  They got all the current major American DS titles on day one.  They even got Polarium before us.  The DS deserves to sell well in the UK.  The problems the DS has in North America just don't exist over there.

As much as it's selling well in the UK, the amount of actual hype for it is incredibly minimal. I'm still hearing people saying they're going to wait for a PSP - Never mind the fact that a more powerful device, with a large catalogue of games, is already available for £70 less.
