Some ideas for Metroid Hunters multiplayer
« on: February 24, 2005, 12:10:08 AM »
Seeing as how Metroid Hunters is a pure FPS, I thought if would be great to have this mode as an alternative to a bunch of battling Samus Arans.
As far as we know, multiplayer in Hunters will just be a max of 16 Samuses running around, basically using single player weapons (and some multiplayer exclusives) on maps probably based off single player levels.

But we all know there is much more to the Metroid universe than Samus, and seeing tons of Samuses running around is pretty silly anyway. And come on, the more multiplayer modes in an FPS the better.

So I was thinking about a Federation vs. Space Pirates mode. You pick a race, human marines (like from Fusion or Prime 2) or Space Pirates. Each would have it's own HUD, weapons, special stuff. Stick in vehicles if you want. Think of awesome team deathmatches, capture the flags, and anything else they can think up. Plus it would be sweet having the choice between two races. Humans could have things like advanced hud, great armor, Space Pirates could have sweet jumps and evasive moves, and those sweet blades on their wrists for melee combat.
And think how awesome it would be if you could choose different classes to make your own perfect team, example for humans medic soldiers, scouts, front line, for Pirates things like elites, troopers, commandos, the sword ones that can turn invisible, maybe even flying pirates (humans have armored vehicles, pirates can fly?).

Maybe even throw in co-op single player missions where you and your friends build your perfect Pirate or Federation team, then go through co-op scenarios against the AI, or even against an enemy human team with their own mission objectives which you must stop them from achieving. You'd have to manage your team, splitting up maybe with one half doing objectives and other half trying to sabotage the enemy team. With 8 players per team it would be so much fun, especially if this game supports Wi-Fi which it had BETTER, or so many people are going to be pissed.

Stuff like that would really give you awesome stuff to do even after completing the single player game for people who get tired of the samus deathmatches. And by having it deal with Pirates and Marines you won't have so called Metroid purists crying over their sacred game being defiled either. And before any fanboys draw parallels to Halo 2 and start whining, shut up First, in halo 2 covanents and spartans are exactly the same, and second, I wasn't even thinking of Halo 2 when I came up with this. I was thinking about how cool it was in Monolith's Aliens Vs. Predator 2 was where you had an FPS where you went through the race as an Alien, a Predator, and a human soldier, all unique. And man, that game was freaking scary when you were playing as the little soldier.

Unfortunately, I'm fully expecting Nintendo to take the lazy route and just have standard deathmatch modes that haven't changed since the days of Goldeneye... sigh...

Anything would be better than the usual deathmatch, the concept is just bizarre since Samus is a lonely bounty hunter, I still cant stomach multiplayer in echoes, its just wrong, there can only be ONE Samus! (yes, Im one of the so called Metroid purists ). I think that since one of the main aspects in Metroid is boss fights it would be really great to have a multiplayer mode where one player is the boss and the others have to cooperate, and of course make it either pirates or federation troopers, and maybe only ONE person could be Samus, for example she being the leader (heh, although that would be bizzare too, but not as much as Samus 1 vs Samus 2 ), in summary, any idea thats at least consistent with the gaming universe of the series.

Yeah I had the idea of Samus being a leader type character for the marines..
As for one player being the boss, well I don't think that would work since a) the controls would be wack and b) bosses run on a script which you must exploit to beat them, a human boss won't go through a bosses patterns... Although co-op against a CPU boss would be awesome.

Heck have a boss + plus human marine team + human pirate team all thrown together... Make the boss spawn metroids for good measure... hehe

When I first read about this game I wanted it to be a game where you went around and collected bounties.  Coupled with the online thing I thought it would be great to hunt human opponents.  Higher ranked hunters would have higher bounties, and beating them would up your own rank and net you some cash.  You would use the cash to buy new weapons or upgrade the exsisting ones.  You could join clans, and even put up bigger bounties on a player that wronged you.

I didn't want Samus running around either, at least not playable.  A robust charater creation system with space pirates, marines, luminoth, chozo, or any other race from the metroid universe would be great.  Just a big online universe where everyone has a bounty on thier head, and if you are number one, everyone is after you.
It may be simple, but it ain't easy.

I hope you get to play as other characters. Not only am I bothered by the idea of too many copies of a single character existing, I'd prefer some more variety. I didn't write that Doom 3 PPM support for nothing.

wow, I really really like this idea! Still, I really want this game to be focused in the lonely bounty hunter Samus and that sense of lonelines you got sometimes, specially in supermetroid ( I just remembered Maridia and its music theme, wasnt that just great? ),  but I know that that loneliness feeling its hard to pull in multiplayer, oh well Im hoping for the best ^_^

Mantidor, you'd still be alone.  Imagine that you were in a clan, and one of the top ten decided to join it.  Wouldn't you want to backstab a little bit, and wouldn't you be afraid that he was going to backstab your entire clan to raise his rank?  I mean, if the person in the number one postion took me as an apprentice, I'd learn everything I could then backstab.  Clan structures would end up being very weak because of the ranking system.

However, I too would prefer a strong single player game, mainly because I don't have access to Wifi, and I don't know anyone with a DS.  If it is multiplayer centric, it had better offer Bots.  And a really good bot system, where you can create your own and give them points to strengthen certain traits.  Like Red Faction 2's bot system, or Unreal Tournament's.
It may be simple, but it ain't easy.

This MMORPG stuff is all well and good but it sounds more like a Star Wars Bounty Hunter RPG.

I don't want more than one bounty hunter in Metroid.

This game is so un-metroid though, if they've already adopted FPS style controls why not continue doing new things?  I like Metroid a lot, but the lone bounty hunter thing is getting a little old.  I liked Fusion because of Adam, and I like Echoes because of U-Mos.  I want a little character interaction, and this title seems like a good time to do it.  Mainly because it's already so different.  If the multiplayer is just a bunch of Samuses(Sami?) running around it will seem silly and match even less.  However if there’s character interaction it can open up for more Multiplayer Skins.

What I'm saying is that if this game is multiplayer centric it had better go all out.  And If it's single player, I would like some character interaction and difference in character during multiplayer.  If the hidden video in First Hunt is any indication there is some character interaction.  I'm a little tired of the lone bounty hunter after playing through the Primes.  I want Samus caught up in a War with intelligent beings that are actually walking around, and not just frozen in a stasis pod.  This first impressions of this game show it pretty non-metroid, why not continue with that and breathe some life into the series.
It may be simple, but it ain't easy.

Something I'd like to see in a Metroid MP game would be a phase shifter which would allow you to change into a different spectrum and be visible to only one visor with the ability to switch spectrums in certain intervals. Kinda like the optical cloaking in MP2 MP but turned into a permanent part of the gameplay instead of a powerup. That way you'd have to listen for audio cues (perhaps footsteps sound different depending on your spectrum) and switch visors when you suspect someone nearby. Perhaps have people using the cloaking device be more vulnerable towards certain weapons (e.g. IR spectrum-> weak towards ice beam, XRay Spectrum -> weak towards Wave Beam). Would also emphasize the hunter/hunted atmosphere. In Marines vs. Pirates that would obviously be an ability restricted to one or two classes.

Nice ideas KDR. That would go great with a stealth marine or the cloaked pirates.
