Spike TV's Video Game Awards
« on: November 16, 2004, 06:37:48 PM »

I was just over at Gamespot right now looking for something new to read and ran across some info on the nominees. Here's the link http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/1...ws_6113356.html
I can not believe my eyes on the total lack of Nintendo related software. All I managed to see was the Nintendo DS for Best New Technology, Donkey Konga for Most Addictive Game (viewer's choice) and 3 gameboy advance game for Best Handheld (Game I would guess).

I'll like to ask everyone what they think of the lists and where do you think they went wrong. I for one have the following 2 problems with the list

For 1. They have games on that list that haven't even been released (Metal Gear Solid 3)

and 2. Metriod Prime 2 was no where to be mentioned. I believe it should've been nominated for Best Graphics with Halo 2 being taken off the list and Best First Person Action with Doom 3 taken off that list. Halo 2's graphics aren't the best Ive seen, the textures are nice but the geometric structure of the land at times was basic taking design structure back to the days of turok. This was done I'm assuming to keep the framerate high given the open feel of some of the stages. As for Doom 3, it was a good game but there was more graphics than anything else.

I see this so called Video Game Awards show as a direct depiction of how mainstream the video game industry has become. Spike TV now resembles the MTV of video games.

Isn't this the thing that was considered "the worst thing on TV, ever, EVER" last year?

I remember the last time they showed it.

They wasted time with Jackass stars' nudity, wrestling, rappers, etc  They wasted time so much compared to any other award show.

They nominated video game soundtracks contributed by artists who didn't make their music for the game.  Those artists were just ridiculously lucky.  DMX made his music for the fans and they gave the game that had his music the best music soundtrack awards.

They had the best movie game award and they even gave that a band to play a song for after they anounced the game to waste even more time.  It was "Enter the Matrix."  What the hell?!  They didn't even have an RPG award!

The amount of times they showed a commercial was just as much as a superbowl.  A football play can last less than a minute but they should take their time when explaining sound, graphics, gameplay, and control.

They weren't even funny when they tried to.  I know the mainstream knows about The Chapelle Show so how the heck did they find any of that stuff funny?  They made the funny things in the Final Fantasy games look like something from the gods.

Compared to MTV, their awards were pretty good.  Even you don't like their music Spikes VGA makes their award shows feel like E3.

Last year Madden won game of the year.  F*cking Madden!  Even all the review sites that give each annual Madden release a higher score every time don't do that.  It's like an unwritten rule that annual sports games don't win game of the year.

Last year's was a waste of time and was completely rejected by all serious videogame fans.  So for this year to have a complete snubbing of Nintendo is no surprise.  And no one is going to watch this year.  A fair bit of people turned in last year out of curiousity but due to universal bad impressions of last year's show I expect this year's will bomb and we'll see no year three.  Casual gamers don't watch shows based on videogames.  There's no market for this.

At the very least maybe Nintendo will notice that their for sure Game of the Year nominee is being completely snubbed.  As bad as this is it's the ultimate wake up call for Nintendo's marketing department.

Last years show wasn't that great. I've seen a commerical for this next one, its like meh! I went to Spike TV's site and voted, and they were pretty crappy. It's like same game for every category. I also noticed MP2:E was not nominated and thats BS. I want Half-Life 2 to sweep the awards. Somehow they were even nominated for best RTS game [SARCASAM]

PS: It's Dec 14, if anyone wants to point and laugh at how dumb it is.

Heck Ian, how can you compete against games that haven't been released yet, lke MGS3 or games that were just released recently, Like Half Life 2.  Thi is hype wars, an I want Nintendo to have no part in it.

The RPG category just ticks me off.  I mean either ToS and Paper Mario 2 should be a shoo-in.   At the very least they both better than X-Men Legends.  You can't just throw marketing against that kind of stupidity Ian.

Anyway, I don't think it would be prudent to throw away hype money and marketing dollars on an award show whose awards have found a way to be worth less than a Grammy.

I don't mean using money just to get a Spike TV nomination.  I'm saying that if Nintendo had better marketing they wouldn't be ignored like this.  It's not this Spike TV crap specifically.  I'm just using this awards show as an example to show that Nintendo is largely ignored by the mainstream and thus needs to improve their marketing.

Then explain how Shin Megami Tensei got on Best RPG.  That game received NO marketing.  Nobody cares about it now.  Nobody cared about it then.  Therefore, this game SHOULD be ignored.  Paper Mario got ads on TV, and rather good commercials too, and yet it magically gets snubbed.  Have you seen an ad for Half Life 2 yet?  I haven't, but I saw 2 different ones for Metroid Prime 2.  How about MGS3?  Nintendo's marketing is not the problem here.

It really isn't.  I was in the cafeteria the other day and there's a largescreen TV in it.  A Gamecube commercial (don't remember what.  Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, I think) came up.  Some guy at the table next of me said something that sounded like "Huh.  Gamecube." It could have been satisfactory, I didn't hear it well, but I doubt it.  Nintendo's marketing is not the problem, apparently.

Should any of us as serious gamers be watching this crap?
This is TV at its worst.
