one screen will be showing the roughly N64-level graphics of the ARM9, while the other would be limited to graphics "twice as powerful as the GBA"

The GBA does 3D, so Ruby Onix's very simple statement right here should be enough to shut people up on this matter.  Still, a lot of games aren't even using 3D on one screen yet, probably because 2D games are generally just easier to pick up and play, which helps a lot on a handheld.

DS: 2.50" x 1.66"  (each)
PSP: 3.92" x 2.21"

See my "to scale" ascii art...

For a comparison, the Tapwave Zodiac has a res of 480x320 on a 3.8 inch screen with touch screen capabilities. It works as a PDA and costs a little less than the PSP's projected price of 350$. How's that?

I read that the 33MHz ARM7 in the DS is relegated to performing processing for basic system functions; touch input, wireless, sound. So the ARM9 performs all graphics processing.

Link.

Edit: Provided the article above is accurate, of course. Has there been any update on Nintendo's stance regarding the lock-out of the ARM7?

I bet you can change that with the right code but developing for AMP is hell (why do you think PS2 devs complain all day?).
