Broodwars has clearly just spent too much time watching rage bait YouTubers make mountains out of molehills..

Well, I wouldn't call YouTubers like ScottTheWoz or Arlo "Rage Bait"-ers, but yeah actually. It's been a slow news week and my office job gets very dull without something playing in my ear. It is helpful to know what people are complaining about, though. I don't GAF about Mario Kart, so I wouldn't have known about the outrage about Nintendo forcing players to play intermissions instead of actual races without it.

I originally intended to post this in the Switch 2 thread, but since we're here, why not:

I bought my Switch to play Switch 1 games with the performance they should have had at launch and to play the rare Switch 2 1st party exclusive, so from my perspective buying a Switch has been worth it so far. DK Bananza was extremely overhyped, but it was an enjoyable game, and I've made more progress in Xenoblade 2 in the last month than I did the last 8 years. The handheld experience is much better this time, and because I buy my games physically I have plenty of storage for all my old Switch 1 games. Apparently, Deadly Premonition 2 is actually in a playable state for the first time ever on Switch 2.

It is a console worth owning for my very particular use case, having a large backlog of games I either gave up on or never got around to, mainly due to very few games on the Switch even hitting 30 FPS, let alone 60. Fire Emblem 3 Houses was just infuriating at its sub-20 FPS. I don't intend to ever purchase anything other than the odd 1st party Switch 2 exclusive, so many of the Nintendo's decisions with the Switch 2 simply don't affect me. That said, there's a lot of small stuff about the Switch 2 that just bugs me, like my Switch 1 Pro Controller being unable to turn the Switch 2 on by itself and the home menu STILL not having themes of any sort (an issue I have with every console these days)

That said, I can't imagine ever using my Switch 2 as my dominant platform. The 1st party games are just too scarce and many just don't appeal to me, the pricing of absolutely everything is way out of hand, and as a physical game purchaser 3rd party games are a COMPLETE wash since they're almost all Key Cards. And Nintendo is burning a lot of goodwill with some of their decisions lately. For example, that DK Bananza DLC is blatantly cut content, and in no way earns that $20 price tag.

And nothing good has ever come of game mechanics being patented. I don't care how specific the use case is. We shouldn't have patents on game mechanics, as it just stifles innovation. Nintendo wasn't the first to invent a lot of what Pokemon does. They just did it better than anyone else at the time with extremely marketable execution, ending in 30 years of Game Freak just doing the bare minimum.

The Switch 2 has sold well out of the gate because there was ample stock, but we'll see how that momentum keeps up. I'm satisfied with my purchase for its very limited use case, but I absolutely understand why so many seem to be unhappy with it.

The Jays are my team but with the Mariners being the closet team to me and having gone to games in Seattle many times I have a soft spot for them as well.  My brother is an outright M's fan, so with both teams in the playoffs it could get interesting in my family, if it ends up being him against our dad and I.  It's going to eat a lot into Switch time but it will be nice to watch the playoffs with Dad.  Brings back memories of '92.

What bad press and what was deserved about it?

My guess is Mario Kart World’s MSRP or merely Nintendo Switch 2 pricing in general.

Also, most people aren’t happy with Litigious Nintendo® though to be fair, the reporting on those stories is often thoroughly irresponsible and largely misleading. It’s easier to get mad about a sensationalized headline than it is to do even a minimal amount of reading.

The pricing, the Key Cards, the lack of 1st party announcements, the patent nonsense, locking VB games you can't even own behind expensive peripherals, bricking people's Switch 2's because they inadvertently bought Used Games that had been copied, etc.

And apparently a lot of Mario Kart fans are pissed that Nintendo patched World to remove their ability to guarantee 3 lap races in online matches. World in general got a rapid negative re-evaluation shortly after launch.

Some (especially YouTube channels and social media accounts) would say Nintendo has been rather "mask off" since the Switch 2 unveil, that the business side of Nintendo finally supplanted the creative one. In light of that, I can't say I'm going to miss the former EA executive leaving NoA.

I'm so excited about the Guardians, their comeback has been incredible. They were 15.5 games back at one point, which would make this the biggest comeback to win a division in MLB history, but it's even crazier that just a month ago they were 12.5 back. They've been on just a ridiculous run, and it's been so fun to watch.

Who's excited for baseball playoffs? It's been awhile since I've been really hyped up for the MLB playoffs as it's usually just one or two teams I care to watch but this year there's a lot of teams in that have me excited for the MLB playoffs than I have been in past years (although I did quite enjoy the Dodgers / Yankees championship series last year.)

Still, I can't help but think of Insanolord whenever keeping track of this season winding down with the Guardians now overtaking the Detriot Tigers in the division. I've got to think he's getting excited also for MLB playoffs. Still, I don't want the Tigers to collapse too much more so that they can prevent the Astros from making the playoffs.

After leading in their division for most of the year, it's a bit of a bummer to see the Yankee surging a bit near the end to possibly take away the number one spot from the Blue Jays. Schedule has been a bit more on the easier side for the Yankees at the end here but if Jays can just sweep this last season series with the Rays than it's all good.

Meanwhile, Mets are just hovering in that last wildcard spot and it would be kind of funny to see them miss out on the playoffs after the Juan Soto signing. Have to wonder if Juan might be regretting that decision to sign with the Mets after getting to the Championship with the Yankees last year and seeing the Yankees and Jays both fighting for first in the AL after turning down both those teams trying to sign him after last year's playoffs. But maybe $765 million makes it easy to shrug that off.

But with Mariners, Brewers, Dodgers, Cubs and likely the Red Sox in as well, most of the teams I sort of root for to win are also in it this year. Also curious to see how well the Padres do this year. Last year, they put a scare into the Dodgers and almost knocked them out early. In a way, they were almost the hardest team the Dodgers faced on their way to winning another Championship. Wonder if the Padres have it in them to upset some teams this year so even they've got my interest.

And I guess there's also the Philadelphia Phillies taking up some space in these proceedings but, along with possibly the Tigers, you're also going to have some dud non-interesting teams making the playoffs. What can you do? There's more shrug-I-don't-really-care-about-them teams in a league than there are ones you root for. Just gotta hope they aren't the ones that end up winning unless they're facing off against the teams you loathe.

TalkBack / Re: Next Nintendo Direct To Air September 12
« Last post by Khushrenada on September 26, 2025, 01:35:17 AM »
So, the ol' Nintendo Direct.

I must say, the beginning Mario Anniversary segment got me hyped up and expecting to see some footage of a new Mario 3D platformer. It made me realize how much that is sort of at the top of my gaming wishlist right now. After waiting patiently through the shrug of a tease for the next Mario movie, I then got to be disappointed by just getting a port of some past 3D Mario games in Galaxy 1 and 2. It's a bit of a mixed reaction since Mario Galaxy 1 is my least favorite 3D Mario game (and adding more story pages to Rosalina's storytime book is a further step in the wrong direction). Plus, with Galaxy 1 being included in that recent 3D All-Stars, it just further felt like it was way too soon to be hyping up a port of that game again. On the other hand, Galaxy 2 remains in my memory as one of the absolute best Mario games of the past 15 (heck even 20) years and it's been so long since I played it that I'd welcome a replay of it. Of course, I don't really need this port to do that since I still have a functioning Wii U and Wiimotes. Still it made me wonder if this might be a gearing up to suddenly announce Super Mario Galaxy 3.

But nope. It's a new Mario Tennis, my least favorite of the Mario sports games. Even that felt like it was too soon to be having another Tennis game but it's been 7 years since Aces right now. And, to its credit, what was shown actually had me thinking it might be the first Mario Tennis game I'd actually want to buy and play instead of buying it more to sit on my shelf as completeness for a software library catalogue. The DLC for Mario Wonder reminded me that I really wanted to finally get that game and get playing it since I seem to be jonesin' for a new Mario platformer. And that's what I've done. Got a copy of the game and played through the first world now. Looking at this DLC again, it seems to be more about making a party game out of a Mario platformer but it also seems to be hinting at more regular platforming content as well. Consider me intrigued yet at the same time it was a bit of a let down that after all this Mario talk, the best announcement just seemed to be about DLC for a game two years old.

Although then we come to Yoshi. They included him in the Mario portion but I consider the game a bit separate from the Mario series particularly as there doesn't seem to be any of sign of Mario appearing in this game. By far the best announcement in the Mario section though due in part to it being a game, a new game and maybe a different direction for the Yoshi series. The game I thought of when seeing the trailer was Untitled Goose Game. That's because UGG was about figuring out how to figure out how to pull off a checklist of objectives and it seemed like that's what this game was showing. Figuring out objectives /missions of requests to enter them into the Mr. E book. Curious to see how this one might turn out.

And thus another domino falls causing the unprecedented partnership to become more precedented by the day.

Considering all the bad press Nintendo has (deservedly) earned this year

What bad press and what was deserved about it?
