TalkBack / RE: REVIEWS: Ultimate Mortal Kombat

This game gets bonus points for being the only passable fighter with online capabilities on the DS. I just might get this game since Street Fighter isn't coming to the DS and Guilty Gear doesn't have online.
Or maybe I should check out Draglade.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: GameCube problem

You just need to adjust the laser. Open it up, take out the main disk drive, and under it there's a small black square with a screw on it. Turn the screw counterclockwise ever so slightly and then try it again, if it doesn't work, try turning it a bit more.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamecube shuts off after 20 min. of play.

It's a very common problem and not that hard to fix actually. The hardest part is getting your gamecube open.

First, you need a gamebit driver. If you don't have one, you can make one. You need a pen made out of hard plastic (try bending the pen--if it doesn't give way, it'll probably work). Melt the tip (don't burn it) and hold it over one of the four screws holding the cover on. After it cools, you should be able to open up your GC with it.
Unscrew everything and take out the main disk drive. Flip it over (be careful not to scratch the lens) and then unscrew the bottom. You'll then see a small black square with a screw on it. This adjusts the laser. Turn it about 30 degrees counterclockwise. Put everything back together and it should work. If it doesn't, turn the screw slightly more.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii to feature same online structure as the DS

What Nintendo should do with online

*Note: This isn't what I would want, but is more of an ideal compromise solution. I'd love to have things like in-game and lobby chat, but that's not going to happen.

1. Let people make gamer tags, preferably ones that work with all of your Wii games.
2. Have matchmaking lobbies. Divide them according to region (but don't force anyone to play in a certain region--make an option).
3. Implement the rivals system.
4. Have in-game chat with people on your friends list. In order for you to add someone to your list, you must know their Wii number, which won't be shown publicly. Also, make it so that your friends list and rivals list is easily accessible while in the matchmaking lobby.
5. Have commands for game invites, challenges, etc. Also allow for password protected games and a way to send a password to a specific person.
6. Give the host a few options such as kicking players and limiting the number of players.
7. Keep random matchmaking an option.
8. Most importantly, minimize lag.

A typical online session might look like this:
You load up Brawl and click on "wifi." A list of different regions comes up on the screen. You select one and after you're connected to a server, you see a list of waiting games coupled with Mii avatars of the hosts. You join a game, and after being 4-stocked a few times, you decide to try playing someone closer to your level. You select a predetermined message (ugh, but I doubt that Nintendo would allow anything more personal) saying something like "good game" and "bye." After leaving, you receive a game invite. It happens to be someone whom you added to your rivals list last week. Apparently he has a few friends and wants to play them with you as his doubles partner. After a few hilarious matches, the last of which ended with you accidentally edge-guarding your teammate and then falling to your death, you decide that you're done for the day.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New game idea thread

Kinda obvious but...a 2D platformer+shooter. You run with the nunchuck, jump with A, shoot with B, aim with the Wiimote, C/Z/Dpad is for items/ reloading/ weapon switching and such.

smashboards.com is the largest online Smash community, so if you're looking for tourneys, look around there.

There are hidden stats not shown in the game.  Each of the six stats (HP, Atk, etc) are given a random value between 0-31 (so, 32 possible values), that influence how high the stats go.  They make a huge difference.  So when a hacker comes in with all hidden stats at 31...
Well, put it this way - the odds of catching one in the wild would be 32 to the power of 6 - or 1 in 1,073,741,824.  You have better odds winning a lottery.  And odds of catching a shiny are one in 8192, putting the odds at over 1 in 8 trillion for a perfect stat shiny.  Breeding gives you some control, but not a significant enough amount to even think about competing with hackers.
By that, I'd say that hackers are the only people playing the level 100's with perfect stats.
It also makes it really easy for Nintendo to spot if they wanted to.  But are they going to?

Shiny Pokemon doesn't matter. It also doesn't matter too much that your Pokemon have perfect stats, just near perfect. It can also be manipulated by breeding, which actually very effective. Besides, stats are just one aspect; movesets matter just as much.

Anyway, don't underestimate the Pokemon competitive scene. The really competitive players on Netbattle actually have those same Pokemon with similar stats in their game.

Hacks won't matter as long as stats don't go above theoretically possible ranges. Hackers will probably be a small minority out of the group of players who have all level 100's with perfect stats.

And Pokemon works as a competitive game. Online will be all about fighting friends or fighting competitively, and when you're fighting competitively, it's a given that all your Pokemon should have near-perfect stats. Prediction and team-building strategy will be the main factors in D/P online, not whether you raised your Pokemon with AR or something.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo / Nexon working on Wii project

MapleStory... I remember that game. Got my account a few weeks after Bera was released and played it for about a year. I lost interest, but it was great fun while it lasted.

Anyway, Nexon/Wizet (Wizet created MS, Nexon merely sponsored it) is supposed to release MapleStory DS sometime in the coming years, although many people suspect that it'll be a sidescrolling RPG rather than a MMORPG.

Anyway, my little blurb on Nexon: Nexon created/sponsored numerous other games such as BnB (an online bomberman clone), some online racing game I remember hearing about somewhere, a FPS called WarRock, and too many MMORPGs to name. I dunno how well most of these games did, although Nexon is making plenty of money and the two games I've played became increasingly popular in the time frame of my playing. Most games and pretty much everything about them are marketed as "casual," right down to their cute website (except for a few of the MMORPGs that have a 3D, fantasy-based, slightly more mature look to them), although from the two games I've played, BnB and MS, you really need to know how to play before you start (in BnB, you'll probably get owned too many times that you'll probably quit if you play too many times before reading up on some tactics and in MS, it's way too easy to "screw up" your character unless you at least loosely follow a guide/build).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: whats the big deal about virtual console?
« on: January 01, 2007, 03:57:50 PM »
One reason people would get VC games is for the novelty and because they're huge fans. I'm probably going to only get Earthbound and SSB for the VC. Earthbound because like every other Earthbound fan out there, I have a cult-like affinity towards that game (and also because EB carts cost around $70-80 on ebay), and SSB because having every SSB title in one system would be pretty damn close to perfection. Other stuff I can just play on the old systems themselves.
Anyway, anyone ever heard of Kaillera? Using certain emulators, you can play games from NES, SNES, N64, arcade, Genesis, PS1, and a bunch of other systems online. I normally wouldn't use ROMs, but the prospect of being able to play these games online was irresistable. And guess what one of the most popular games is. That's right, Super Smash Bros for the N64. If Nintendo were to release modified versions of some of these games on the VC including online support, fixing some bugs these games had, or adding multiplayer to games that seem like multiplayer would be a no-brainer but don't have it for some reason or another (like F-Zero), it could mean a jump in VC downloads and happy customers.
Also, online gamers = hardcore isn't true. Take a look at WoW, MapleStory, Counter-Strike, Starcraft, etc. Most of the people who play these games online aren't hardcore gamers. Nintendo really needs to get online going.
