Nintendo Gaming / RE:Red Steel Topic, MORE new details! (last post)
« on: November 20, 2006, 05:05:23 AM »
Red Steel certainly is a mixed bag.
*The controls work for the most part -- the aiming is great once you get used to it, but the turning does indeed suck. Swordplay is great, and exactly how I expected it to feel. Shootouts are very fun -- taking cover behind objects and the free-aiming do give it a bit of an oldschool arcade lightgun feel.
*I had no problems whatsoever parrying and striking, and the delay is unnoticable to me.
*The graphics are half great, and half merely OK. For instance, the character models and shading are fantastic, and the light blooming/beaming is quite striking. But it feels a bit... sloppy. The framerate is crap, for one. The game rarely sticks at a constant 30fps, and fluidity is crucial in an FPS. Also, little graphical glitches are everywhere. For example, when I was admiring some VERY nice water/warping effects in an in-game kitchen sink, firing at the water would result in a broken glass noise and decal on the surface.
*HOLY CRAP this game makes me feel motion sick. Worse than Timesplitters and MP.

In all, the game does feel a bit rushed and unpolished, ala Geist. I can only imagine how much better it would play if they took a bit more time to tighten up the framerate and make the free-aiming a function that can be toggled on and off during gameplay, maybe by hitting button 1 or 2.

5.5 from Gamespot. Yikes, it scored far worse than I thought it ever would. Still, I'm waiting for more word on ths game (as well as my own impressions tomorrow. 5.5 sounds like it will be a outlier as far as scores go -- games need to be pretty broken for a score like that.

kiosk is up in Arlington, VA. The game is fun, but I'm not sure I'd drop 50$ on it. I actually had more fun just dinking around with the Wii menu and settings -- the remote truly feels great and, well, revolutionary. Just being able to see the cursor mimic hand position and rotation was amazing to me.
As far as Excitetruck goes, it reminds me of an off-road fzero. It's fast, there are lots of obstacles, and some pretty extensive airtime from jumps. The visuals were OK. They certainly weren't sub GC quality, but they didn't look any better than a nice Xbox game. the textures were sharp, the water reflections were better than on the GC, the cars had relatime reflections on them, and there was plenty of foliage and small details like coconuts falling off trees when hit. The only ugly thing about the game is its level of detail scaling. trees and foliage have some nasty popup, and there were times where the terrain looked absolutely horrible. For instance, when taking a large jump on the Fiji stage, the shoreline was comprised of a couple of right angles as opposed to a smooth curve, or even rough, curve. You can see this happening on the "direct feed montage" video at IGN. Hell, you can even see it in the thumbnail for the video!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Games at Retail
« on: November 16, 2006, 08:23:42 AM »
Just snagged Red Steel at EBgames today (Ballston Mall, Arlington VA). The clerk claimed that all of the copies of Zelda were put aside for preorders only.
The FYE next door only has a handful of games from activision.

Just as a side note, the same clerk also claimed that he recieved a Wii of his own early, because "it's been out for while in Japan". I casually noted that I "had heard" the Wii wasn't hitting japan for another 3 weeks, yet he still insisted. This all happened in the presence of the store manager, which leads me to believe that it is store policy to be full of crap and tell straight out lies to customers.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii games in stock now!?

Are these games for sale on a first-come, first-serve basis? Or are they the stock for those who preordered?

I went to EBgames last week to see about preordering Zelda, which was of naturally impossible. They did, however, give me a list of games they had still available for preorder, among them being Excite Truck. Excite truck had a listed shipment date of 11/14, with some third party titles having dates slightly earlier and others much later.
The point of this post is that stores are most likely recieving their shipments of Nintendo published titles TODAY, the 14th. Stores like FYE, who are not taking preorders for anything other than Wii systems, may have some big titles in stock now and available for purchase with some slight prodding.
I'll edit my post with results after checking my local store.

Nintendo Gaming / Launch title ratings
« on: October 12, 2006, 06:26:33 AM »
http://us.wii.com/software.jsp
The official ESRB ratings are out on a number of Wii games now.
The new Zelda is rated T for blood and violence. Red Steel is T for violence, language, and suggestive themes. Guess that clears up some particularly unfounded speculation of a M rated Zelda game (whatever happened to Nemo83, anyways?).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Pre-Orders & Bundles
« on: October 05, 2006, 07:24:32 PM »
I just preordered my system from FYE. Even though it's been a few weeks since preorders started there, I was only the 7th person to have reserved one.
I was surprised, but then again, this is not exactly from an area where the market really has much interest in games other than the usual GTA/Madden/other über-masculine generes for the Xbox and PSP. Thug/urban culture is big here, from the real gangbangers to the middle-class surburban caucasians who are obsessed with them. In fact, the local EB games and FYE have quite possibly the smallest and oldest stock of DS and Gamecube titles -- there are only a handful of first generation titles for each platform and they are still listed at the original prices (34.99 and 49.99!!!).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Midnight lineups
« on: September 19, 2006, 06:04:20 AM »
Anyone know if Microcenter would be likely to have the Wii in stock on launch day?  They don't seem like the type of place that hypes their videogame section, and I don't think they'd be doing a midnight event. Luckily, I live in a fairly blue-collar and immigrant heavy section of northern VA, so I doubt there will be hordes of middle class dweebs like myself waiting to pick it up at launch...

I will avoid the Gamestops/EB games in Arlington and DC like the plague. Those are sure to sell out immediately, and i'm not about to contend with any lines just to realize that they've sold out.

Nintendo Gaming / Midnight lineups
« on: September 18, 2006, 08:03:37 PM »
OK
So this is the first time I have even considered buying a new video game console at launch, and I'm a bit confused about the whole "midnight launch" deal. Do major outlets open up at 12:00am on the day of launch, or something to that effect? Or is it merely a long lineup outside the store from midnight until the store opens its doors at the usual 9 or 10am schedule?

In other words, do I lineup the evening of Saturday the 18th, or in the wee (no godawful pun intended) hours of Sunday the 19th?

The remote and nunchuck attachment are *expensive*. 3800 yen for the remote is roughly $30, and an additional 1800 for the attachment is $16. Seeing as prices are higher for Nintendo products in the USA, my guess is that a complete controller package will be 50 dollars.

Ouch.

Yikes, guess Sunday is it. The price is fine to me -- it's what I had expected. Eight more weeks is painful, though.

Sunday is an odd day for any product launch...
My guess is that the relase date and price are in the right ballpark, but launching hardware on a day where stores open late/close early is just plain strange to me. I've worked in a number of (non game) stores, and sundays were always the slowest in terms of sales.

They did abandon Gmecube, but then again who didn't?

Actually, I thought that the ports of MKII were actually quite decent for each respective platform, the SNES in particular.
As far as Rampage, I really find it hard to imagine that Midway would spend so much effort on some nice looking player models, complete with specular and bump mapping, and leave the rest of the game's assets untouched. As it is, the game looks terrible with the stark contrast in quality.

According to IGN, Ubisoft did indeed experiment with a fully free-form sword control setup, but scrapped it because it felt and played poorly. I can see where they are coming from -- every play that Namco sword game in the arcades? You can basically wave the sword around aimlessly and do fairly well, your attacks never meet with any sort of resistance (blocked attacks just pass through without damage), and so on.  Red steel's swordfights would have likely turned into a remote wiggle-fest, which is less than immersive and most likely why they witched to the preset gesture system.
As far as the revamp goes, my guess is that they are simply implementing a far wider range of recognized gestures.  Instead of a single downward slash gesture and animation, I would bet that there would be a much wider variety corresponding to a good number of different angles for the same basic motion.
Still, the freeform control scheme could possibly work... perhaps during swordfights, free perspective control is deactivated and the analogue stick lets you advance, retreat, as well as circle the opponent, which the camera locks on to. The remote is now able to be manipulated freely. Wild flailing motions could do minimal damage if they connect, and perhaps the AI could recognize such motions and respond with a simple one-hit kill thrust or stab making it an unwise strategy. Blocks could be achieved by appropriately angling the sword or by tossing the nunchaku forwards, like at E3.

MP 1 gave me some very bad motion sickness, as did MP 2. Other games to do it were Duke Nukem, Half Life 2, Timesplitters 2, and certain stages in Monkey ball 2.  Quake and Doom never did it to me, Geist didn't either.I think much of it has to do with a very fast framerate and the way the viewpoint moves ("viewbob", if you know what I mean) when walking around.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Take-Two on Wii
« on: June 11, 2006, 09:51:59 AM »
A good "sandbox" game on the Wii would be nice, but I doubt we'll see one from Rockstar or TakeTwo.  To date, every GTA clone created has sucked mightily, so I doubt it would happen.  It would be nice to see a sandbox-type game with a different theme than urban crime, but seeing as just about everything that comes out these days is market tested cookie-cutter crap, I doubt we'll ever see one.

News media is a business.  It has been proven that it is far more profitable to entertain than it is to simply inform, hence all of the human drama stories skyrocketing networks' ratings.  All of the major news media is guilty of this, and all that I have seen take a political slant as well, presumably to secure a particualr political/ethnic/religious/etc demographic.  Fox is the worst and smaller "indie" news sites are also quite bad as far as bias goes.  NPR has great coverage and features, but the opinion segments and choice of events covered undenaibly target the educated liberal whitebread crowd.

Back on topic, doesn't it strain the relationship between Nintendo and third parties such as Sega when they supply the competition with obvious knockoffs of their original titles?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: No multiplayer in Mario Galaxy
« on: June 06, 2006, 05:38:18 AM »
Split screen mario would be arse.  Playing with a lagging, trash talking 12 year old luigi/yoshi/princess/wario/etc would also be arse, and hardly "innovative".
I think Nintendo has some interesting ideas of how to implement this pseudo-multiplayer scheme, and we ought to just wait and see before bitching and moaning about what's innovative or not.

...Luigi as a playable character would be nice.  A standalone Luigi's mansion followup would be nicer.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:yay, new rumored tech specs
« on: June 03, 2006, 04:15:04 PM »
That interview has been around for a bit, and while the specs are not as rediculous as past rumors and fake interviews have revealed, the whole thing still smells like BS.
The little bit about "ragdoll" being touted as an "innovative use of physics" just sounds like someone with very little technical understanding throwing around terms they've heard elsewhere, rather than a project lead on a next-gen (or new gen or whatever...) title.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:EBgames Wii listing
« on: May 23, 2006, 07:01:19 AM »
The devkits for the Wii are incredibly cheap ($2000!!), most games "pick up and play" rather than 50+ hour epics, and the lack of HD assets all make the development of games far cheaper than on the 360 or PS3, possibly even cheaper than last generation.  Logically, this would translate to cheaper game prices.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: EBgames Wii listing

It is pretty obvious that the prices, release dates, and even announced titles for sale are based solely off news and info that has appeared in just about every gaming publication, speculation and otherwise.  reminds me of when the local EB had clipped out an EGM april fool's article about how the new Zelda would ship with a reworked "realistic" Wind Waker, and were promoting it in store as a pre-order promotional.
