I dont know if what you guys are trying to do will actually work, but i do have a guide that i've used that does work, it doesnt have anything to do with broken spindles, it is a lens calibration guide, all you really do is turn a screw about 5 degrees and your gamecube is fixed!  Try it, http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/gamecube_lens_calibrate.txt
