TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Reveals "Third Pillar"!
« on: January 21, 2004, 05:01:39 AM »
Here's a great idea for MADDEN (or any football game for that matter):

In a pass situation, you could have the one screen viewing the field, as is the case now. With the second screen, it could feature a closeup of the primary receiver for the play, so you can watch him to see if he: beats the defender covering him, finds a gap in zone coverage, or breaks open in a slant or square (etc.) route. That would be awesome!!!!

And you could have replays and the such on the second screen, so the game finishes faster. The possibilities that have now opened up are endless! Now developers (particularly third parties) will have to use their brains; Hopefully they do.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Bloomberg: Nintendo to announce next-gen machine at E3
« on: November 13, 2003, 09:02:26 AM »
So many factors would come into play for an early launch, yet all it really comes down to is this:

If a lot of people buy the N5 then this decision will help make Nintendo #1 for next gen.
                                                    ***BUT***
If not enough people buy it, then Nintendo will be screwed over badly.

This worked for the PS2, but we're talking about a different company and a different set of circumstances. The question is: would the risk be worth it???

I would say (as a general comparison) that FF:CC is like Steel Batallion in the sense that yes, you have to pay a large sum of money for hardware, but if you can afford it it's a great game (so I've heard). If you don't have a pile of GBA's or friends with them, and you don't have a pile of link cables, then you're out of luck unless you want to dish out some cash. That's probably the biggest reason why people are dissapointed/upset about the feature, because they can't meet the requirements and will miss out on a game they really want (or will be "stuck" playing singleplayer). I guess it's too bad for those people, of which I am one of (only my GBA SP and one link cable, none of my friends have a GBA). Thankfully we will have Tales Of Symphonia, which has been on the top of my most anticipated list for quite some time, and doesn't have any extra hardware requirements.

General Gaming / RE:psp specs revealed
« on: August 14, 2003, 05:19:25 AM »
Polygons matter little, and I rarely get caught up in spec talks, but I guess I can make an exception.

The PS2 realistically gets between 5 and 10 m polygons/sec, not 10-20 m. The Gamecube normally gets what Nintendo released, and that is 6-12 m polygons, with Rogue Leader getting 15m, the highest of any Game this system. According to Factor 5, it could be up to 20 m with RS3. I don't see the PSP pushing as much poly's as the PS2, so it is probably more like 3-5 m.

I wonder if the PSP will have some PS1 killer apps at launch, plus GTA3. If it does, I can see size, shape, and battery life not factoring in too much. Hardcore Sony fans and people who like GTA and the PS1 games will buy it, tell all their friends about it, and then they will in turn buy it with one game and let it sit on their shelves for years. Thus, the PSP becomes the next big thing, when in reality it is not getting a lot of playtime like the GBA would.

Even though the videogame industry has been rapidly growing over the past years, I don't know if it is necessarily a good thing that it has become mainstream. Some good games and consoles have been overlooked or unheard of by the masses, yet hardcore gamers play them hour after hour, day after day. Yet some rather poor games get hyped and they sell by the truckload, only to sit on people's shelves most of the time. But because those games sell well, the industry is then piled with similar games and more garbage, while developers turn away from creating the really fun and creative games because it is less lucrative. Image, hype, and graphics are driving the industry, not quality and creativity. I've only gone on this little rant because (I'm not bashing Sony) it seems that the mainstream floods to Sony and their Playstation name, and I don't really want the handheld industry becoming mainstream with the coming of the PSP. It seems for the most part handhelds have remained oblivious to the mainstream effects of their console cousins, and IMO it's probably for the better. Competition is fine, but I can only hope that the PSP doesn't bring handhelds mainstream.

Were you talking about me? I wasn't complaining about the screen size at all. In fact, I wish the GBA had a bigger screen, though it certainly doesn't need it. It's nice to see the PSP having a large screen. What I was getting at is the fact that with such a large screen it will not be very portable unless Sony comes up with some sort of spectacular (or miraculous) design.

Think with your brains here, Sony has definetly thought about that. I'm going to guess its going to be between a Game Gear and Atari Lynx in size.

A portable with a 4.5 inch screen being just slightly bigger than a Game Gear? Ha. I'll believe it when I see it. Of course it won't be unreasonably big, but it will be a lot larger than the GBA SP. The SP is 6 inches long unfolded. Almost as big as the PSP's screen. What you don't realize is that Sony doesn't *really* care how big the PSP is just as long as it is portable. Their selling point will have to be power and image, because that is where the Nintendo is most "vulnerable", even if their next handheld addresses those issues.

I wonder which is more likely- Sony cramming all that into a handheld or someone being able to cram the PSP into their pocket?

Gamespot says the screen will be 4.5 inches. It is pretty clear that there is no way anyone will be able to fit this thing in their pocket. With a huge screen, disk based media, and a $#@! load of hardware, I'll be surprised if they can even make it small enough to be a portable. Nokia has bashed the GBA for not being something you would want to be seen carrying in public. What about a huge "portable" gaming device?

Nintendo Gaming / Cube to be Number 1 at Summer
« on: July 05, 2003, 05:06:50 PM »
The general consensus around here seems to be:
F-Zero GX will be good but it wont sell systems.
Mario Kart will be awesome and it will sell systems, appealing to the mainstream.

I would have to PARTIALLY disagree with both of those statements. First of all, it looks to be that F-Zero will be the better of the two games. Mario Kart Double Dash!! has so far the least racing depth of any Mario Kart yet (apart from the two people in a vehice), especially since there are no power slides and no coins to collect. The game is less challenging and slower than previous Mario Kart games. It will still be great, but there is a reason why F-Zero GX turned heads at E3. First of all, the game has amazing graphics, and stellar special effects. Nothing quite beats racing against 29 other vehicles at the same time. The game is extremely fast, challenging, very solid in single player and multiplayer modes, features great courses, it's full of racing depth (with turbo and on track boosts, several different attacks, being able to pass not just left or right but also above and below, and vehicles that vary greatly in playing style and abilities) and has great controls.

As for being able to sell systems, Mario Kart will likely be able to do no more in that regards than Mario Sunshine (This is of course just my opinion). Obviously most Nintendo fans see the game for what it is, but like most everything else, that's not the case with the mainstream. The game's image to the mainstream infortunately may no longer be that of a cool kart racing game, but that of a colourful racer with a pink princess that "only appeals to kiddies". F-Zero on the other hand has all the tools and potential to be a system seller, but likely won't be marketed enough. It's fast,  a cool image and appeal, it has great graphics, and features "cool" characters like Captain Falcon. However, if it's not marketed to death, then you guys are right and it likely wont sell systems.

More on topic, here's a release list for Nintendo and Capcom games. If all the big hits released near the same time, it could have the potential to give the Cube an adrenaline boost, but as they aren't, it'll probably be the same old story, with some of these games being high on software sales lists.

Nintendo
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour - July 28th
F-Zero GX - August 25th
Pokemon Colosseum - September 20th
1080: Avalanche - September 29th
Kirby Air Ride - October 13th
Pikmin 2 - October 27th
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - November 3rd
Mario Kart: Double Dash - November 18th
Mario Party 5 - December 14th

Capcom
P.N.03 - September 9th
Resident Evil: Code Veronica - September
Viewtiful Joe - September 30th
Gotcha Force - November
Disney Hide N' Seek - December 16th

Nintendo Gaming / Official Game Boy Player Discussion
« on: June 21, 2003, 05:05:47 PM »
Has anyone played Donkey Kong GBA on the GB Player? How does it stack up to it's SNES counterpart in terms of graphics on the Player?

What about other GBA games? In the FAQ you said Yoshi's Island looked nice on the GB Player. Does this game as well as other SNES ports look as good as they did on the SNES? That's really the only thing I was wondering before I purchase it. I'm happy about the better quality sound, because great sound adds a lot to a game. Also, if Chrono Trigger was ever ported to the GBA, I would be happy that the great soundtrack would remain top quality on the GB Player, because I'm sure it wouldn't be quite up to par on the GBA speakers.

General Gaming / Sony announces... the PSX!?
« on: June 13, 2003, 06:33:09 PM »
Anyone remember back in the day when gaming consoles were just for games?

Personally, I'm losing respect for Sony more by the day. Sony's only aim with the Playstation anything is to have a monopoly on the home entertainment business, and that is the aim of the PSX, so all the tech enthusiasts will have another piece of Sony hardware. They will probably follow suit on an all-in-one machine with the PS3.

General Gaming / Where would controllers be without Nintendo?
« on: May 25, 2003, 04:43:02 PM »
I always laugh when other people say that Nintendo isn't a "hardware company". Just goes to show what some fanboy's know. But of course, they suck at making console's and controllers.

The fact of the matter is that Nintendo spends a great deal of time and resources making hardware and figuring out how hardware can improve the gaming experience. That is more than you can say for any other hardware making company.

Nintendo Gaming / What do you think of IGN's Top 100 games ever?
« on: May 09, 2003, 02:41:20 PM »
Remember that the criteria for this list is based more on how much the game influenced a genre or the gaming world moreso than how great a game is (although the latter weighs heavily as well). Thus, Ocarina Of Time was given the #2 (not Wind Waker, even if it is the better game) because it had a tremendous influence on 3d games, huge environments, camera angles, controls & camera, graphics, etc. Mario Bros was #1 because it is the very game that defined modern games. It is the "mother" really of the games and platformers we play today, even if there were games before it. And Super Metroid and Metroid Prime were listed separately because they each added different things. Ocarina Of Time and Wind Waker were mentioned together because the things they have established in the gaming world are quite similar in many regards.

I was really impressed with this list. One of the best Top 100 lists I've seen, and they kept to their criteria well. It was nice to see Chrono Trigger at #12, the second best RPG on the list, and only because FF2 (or 4) was really the first huge modern type RPG. FF2 really brought character development and plot development to the fore, and was one of the first to do so. Chrono Trigger is perhaps gaming perfection, especially for RPG's. It took everything and made it PERFECT. It is still considered by many, including myself, not only the best RPG ever, but also the best game ever. If it was a best game list, I would have liked to see it higher, but it was a perfect placement based on the criteria IGN set for the list.

Quite true for the most part. Perhaps a Nintendo console only top 50, 75, or 100. Stating the thought process and reasonings behind your posts is perfect. Although, many of us here have played more than just Nintendo console games, but I know what you mean. Nintendo consoles, with the NES, SNES, Gameboy (GBC & GBA), N64, and Gamecube, will have more than enough games to base a top games list on. The only major thing that would factor in is the fact that not everyone has played older Nintendo games (like on the NES).

I have wanted to do something like this for a long time, however, it is essentially a poll, and unless it was given by the mods, it would probably get locked. If is was ok though, I definitely would be all for it. Just as long as everyone else would be as willing to put some time and thought, as well as unbiasness, into choosing their top 10 or 20, or whatever, as I would.

A bit more on topic, I think their top 100 is pretty good so far, although I wish Shining Force II would have been ranked higher. The interesting part will be when they decide the top 20 or top 30. I really hope Chrono Trigger is in the top 5, or at least the top 10. Anything less than that would be unacceptable. Overall, they have put some good guidelines in place for their top 100.

[sarcasm] Damn. You must be right. Hundreds of games are filling their disks, making it necessary for multiple DVD's to be used. Especially the small development companies, who can easily afford to develop their games on a blu ray disk or multiple DVD's.[/sarcasm]

Of course, you have been banned, so there is really no point in replying, but I felt like it anyways. What I said was a generalized statement. Yes, some disks (a few) are being filled to the point where multiple disks are necessary, but most aren't. Some companies cannot afford to make games on blu-ray disks or even multiple DVD's without sacrificing something, which almost always leads to an unpolished game.

Look back. The companies that fill the disks/use multiple disks are the larger companies. Companies like Square/Enix, Capcom, Nintendo, Konami, Sega, Rare, EA, etc.

Nobunaga's Ambition... Ahh, the times I spent playing that series on NES and the first one on SNES. That was way back in the day, but I heard they're making Nobunaga's Ambition Online or something like that for PS2. It'll probably never see the light of day outside of Japan never mind on the Gamecube.

Oh, and did some dispute go on between Koei and Nintendo (ala Square) or did they just decide to give their full support to Sony?

I could see where some people would like it, but I didn't, and you will have to live with that forever, hehehe...

The music was good in the ending, but most of FF6's music was good. Actually, my overall appeal of the game dwindled slightly (from amazing game  to great/legendary game) towards the end, and I didn't particularly like the final boss battle with Kefka, but there is no doubting the fact that it was an amazing RPG. I guess the ending appeal is just a difference of views, that's all. I wish it had tied the storyline together for the most part, instead of leaving the strings untied.

Are you talking about promoting those games on TV? Do you know how much that would cost??? Nintendo would never make the money back in sales. They do have a fair amount of money, but they aren't Mr. Gates.

Why does Nintendo have to account for not making the game the way some shallow individuals would have liked the graphic's style to be? Most of the people that complain about the artistic style graphics have no intentions of playing the game or have a closed mind about it, so even a kickin commercial would have no affect.

To add to the main point, Nintendo's image will most likely change with the next console if they have a good lauch, wbut not until then. The Gamecube's image is already determined, and no one action short of the main Final Fantasy series being exclusive will change that. The most important factor in determining a console's image is it's launch. Sony had a year from it's official American launch to build up enough titles to blow away Nintendo and Microsoft when they launched. On top of that, the Xbox had Halo. What did Nintendo have? A horrible launch and a purple console. THAT is why Nintendo's image is the way it is. Not Pokemon, not Mario, not a lack of commercials, not a lack of "mature" games, but a bad launch with nothing to turn people to Nintendo, and much to turn them away from them. Even if someone does not buy a console until a year or two after, their mind's are made up at launch or soon there after.

All they can do now is play a bit of catchup, and continue to produce high calibre titles.

Nintendo Gaming / Worst GC game ending
« on: April 10, 2003, 10:56:13 AM »
I haven't played a game with a bad ending yet for Gamecube...

So maybe I'll expand this to previous Nintendo Consoles. The worst endings have been basic games with no ending at all, but I can comment on the most dissapointing ending I've ever experienced- Final Fantasy 6. After going through the game and doing so much, I expected a completely epic ending, or at least something that would spark some emotion or be satisfied or something. Maybe even add a bit of closure to the game story. But no, it was none of that. In fact, it wasn't just disappointing, but horrible. I loved FF6, but the ending almost spoiled my enjoyment of the game.

Nintendo Gaming / Tales of GC RPG

I think it is the first one, rpglover (lmostly the same as ToP, just in 3d, that's the impression I got anyways). I am extremely looking forward to ToS. Has anyone else seen the video of the game from IGN? The environments look SPECTACULAR!!! I love the artistic, yet real style that the towns and that one mining dungeon had. I believe ToP is coming out on the GBA as well, for anyone who hasn't played the game. It is very good, and in my opinion, the story was more than "only pretty good". It actually went more in-depth than many RPG's have. The graphics, artwork, and detail on ToP for Snes was amazing, and hopefully that will happen with this game as well.

Many people have been hoping for a really great RPG to anticipate for the Gamecube. Well folks, this is it. And I mean that with all seriousness.
