General Chat / RE:Nintendo sued over epileptic seizures
« on: March 13, 2004, 02:06:24 AM »
It just goes to show you that you can sue anyone for anything; it doesn't mean you'll win, but hey... they got the attention they were obviously seeking!  This is really the worst lawsuit I have ever heard about; inside the book for every Nintendo game there's a list of warnings involving Seizures.

Quote

Some people (about 1 in 4000) may have seizures or blackouts triggered by light flashes, such as while watching TV or playing video games, even if they have never had a seizure before.

Anyone who has had a seizure, loss of awareness, or other symptom linked to an epileptic condition should consult a doctor before playing a video game.

Parents should watch when their children play video games.  Stop playing and consult a doctor if you or your child have any of the following symptoms:

Convulsions,    Eye or muscle twitching,   Loss of awareness
Altered Vision,       Involuntary movements,  Disorientation

To reduce the likelihood of a seizure when playing video games:

1. Sit or stand as far from the screen as possible.
2. Play video games on the smallest available television screen.
3. Do not play if you are tired or need sleep.
4. Play in a well-lit room.
5. Take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour.

These are repeated in the Precautions Booklet; so with the bright red warning label (easily visible before purchase) on each case, the warning is in each game no less than three times.  Right next to the seizure warning on the case is another label, "Important!  Read the instruction and precaution booklets before setup or use of your system."  I don't see how you can blame a company because you didn't follow the warnings repeated throughout the product.

However, it has inspired me; I have a friend who is epileptic... I feel she needs to sue the city because there's no warning labels on trees.  See, when riding in a car the sun coming through the trees combined with the motion of the vehicle creates a strobe effect that can put her into seizures.  We feel that all trees should have large, visible warning labels, and if that doesn't remedy the problem they should issues a city-wide recall of all trees.  Perhaps they should trim the trees according to their seizure risk?

I'm working on my own lawsuit, the hammer I recently bought didn't have a label saying it could be hazardous to one's health by dropping it on your toe; a warning should come with all hammers advising everyone to wear steel-toed boots.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: DS Controls Layout??
« on: March 04, 2004, 11:28:05 AM »
There's also the possibility of pressure sensitive D-pads (just a thought).  Instead of using the typical "+" layout you could use a "o" and make it analog.  If they're looking for analog controls (which I don't know that they are, it's all speculation) I think this would be the most viable option as it conserves space.

Yeah but he ALREADY gave us one version over twenty years ago.  Why the f*ck shouldn't we be able to get that version if we want to?  This is about what movie I want for MY collection.  That has nothing to do with the "vision" of a talentless hack who got lucky once.

I'm with you on it, as I said I much prefer the originals, but they're his movies and his visions.  He doesn't have to put any version out at all, and when he doesn' it doesn't have to be the versions we want.  It sucks, but it's his perogative.

But honestly, they've put out a million different sets of the original Star Wars trilogy, and I'm 100% positive this won't be the last.  What will piss me off (and I'm almost sure it'll happen, or at least something very similar) is if after Episode III they release a huge 9 disc boxed set that includes all six movies with the "exclusive" original versions of Episode IV - VI.  That way everyone's going to pay $100 for the version of the original trilogy they want.

I know people who own the original trilogy close to 15 times; that's what I hate about Lucas (aside from Episode I & II)... people are charged over and over again for something they already have!  I have a feeling this is only happening so they can release the original cuts at a future date to bring in even more cash because honestly, it wouldn't cost much more to add a second disc with the original cuts.

Are the movies all THAT different to warrent such nonsensical bahviour from anyone?
NO!
Have a look at what you're complaining about:
- OMFG! He changed it so that there's no force field underneath Luke's speeder! It was vasalene! WHY GOD WHY? MURDER HIM!
- OMFG! There's new intro sequences for Mos Eisley, Cloud City and Yavin 4! KILL HIM!
- OMFG! He changed the snow speeders so that they aren't translucent!!
- OMFG! You can actually SEE the Ice Wampa! He ruined that scene!!
- OMFG! There's tentacles on the Sarlacc! THat is SOOO HENtai! ARRRGH!
- OMFG! New and improved musical sequences in RotJ!!!

Just because the SE doesn't show you what they did with the limited amount of SFX as in the original, doesn't mean it should be stabbed in the heart with a wooden stake.
It's all too trivial now.

EDIT: I like the Special Editions, btw.
And the RotJ music sequence at the end is WAAAAAY better than the rather mechanical-sounding music of the original.
And the IMPROVED musical sequence in Jabba's palace was fun, to say the least. Very different, which was what made it good.

While that's understandable, and I feel people go way overboard in their complaints I do agree with them to an extent.  Sometimes even imperfections become part of the movie; I wouldn't be happy if Sam Raimi went back and digitally stitched up the seam in Ted Raimi's suit from Evil Dead II.  Sometimes it's campy fun; the vasoline isn't important in the context of the movie, but it's a cool part you remember enjoying as a child.  So I can understand having your childhood memories of a movie messed up; but the point to remember is that it's George Lucas' vision, not ours.

I like the originals better than the Special Editions, but it doesn't bother me that the originals aren't making it to DVD.  Hopefully they make the new scenes flow a little better in the DVD Editions; they did look a little out of place, so it'd be great if they could fine tune them a little more with newer technology.

General Chat / RE: Zombie Movies
« on: February 08, 2004, 12:53:58 PM »
For other fans of 'Versus'!

Fangoria writes, "Having just come off making the splatter-packed AZUMI, a smash hit in its native Japan, director Ryuhei Kitamura looks toward his next release: an updated version of his popular, hyperactive zombie/gore flick VERSUS. "I'm releasing ULTIMATE VERSUS soon in Japan," the director tells Fango. "I reshot some scenes two months ago; this was four years after originally making the film. I took the cast and crew back up into the mountains and shot an additional 10 minutes, which have been re-edited into the movie. It works great-I had fun with AZUMI but not as much fun as I had when I made VERSUS."

However, fans will have to wait a little longer for an official sequel to VERSUS, although Kitamura does maintain that it is on the drawing boards. "The sequel! Ah yes, I'm working on it," he assures. "It's just a matter of when I make it. I will have my first U.S. movie come out next year, and then do a sequel to VERSUS for 2005 or 2006." The good news for fans of the first film (available on Media Blasters DVD) is that Kitamura plans to have VERSUS 2 follow the adventures of the original film's star Tak Sakaguchi (a.k.a. Prisoner KSC2-303).

"I really don't care when I make it, because the actors and crew of VERSUS are like my family," adds Kitamura. "VERSUS is now very famous all over the world, so it is no longer a problem to get money for VERSUS 2. I was in hell making VERSUS because I had no money at all, but first things first-I have to make my next Japanese movie this year. But if I have time at the end of this year, then next year you will see VERSUS 2."

I can't understand how some movies become so popular, but I don't understand pop-culture in general.  I don't want to say that the masses are dumb in general, but they sure as hell love some stupid movies.

Mouse, you're not the first one to suggest that one to me, and I've been looking at the local FuncoLand, but I'll probably have to catch it off of the net.  We have some second-hand game shops around here that have a few Dreamcast games (great games for CHEAP), but I still haven't stumbled across it yet.

Yeah, I love the games!  I played through "House of the Dead II" on my Dreamcast at least 20 - 30 times.  It's still the main reason I still have my Dreamcast hooked up; I'd love to eventually have the arcade game/cabinet!

And movie companies simply make a movie to appeal to the masses and make money; they don't really have any intention on making a good movie, just turning a profit.  They don't want to appeal to fans of the game, they want to appeal to everyone else because they know the established fanbase is going t go see the movie anyway.

Anyway, the ONLY way a Metroid movie could be watchable is if it was done like "Aliens", and I don't think they'd go that way.  Now I'm not saying the movie would be good, but they have to do something like that to keep the tension and atmosphere present in the Metroid games... but I honestly hope they NEVER make a Metroid movie.  As a child I wept for a week after watching the "Super Mario Bros." movie.  I felt like my Italian friends betrayed me!

General Chat / RE: Do people even rent games anymore?
« on: February 03, 2004, 04:21:49 PM »
For me it depends on the replay value of the game.  Usually anything put out by Nintendo I always pick up; it never fails, I beat Metroid: Prime and Zelda: The Wind Waker a couple of times and put them aside... a few months later I started playing them again.  Sports games I buy, but platformers that I can beat in a few days, I rent.  The Movie Gallery here is nice, $3 for a week rental (on anything, not just games).  There's close to equal shelf space for Xbox, GameCube, and PS2, so it works out well.

Another good thing is that if you're late it automatically rolls over, they charge you $3 again, but you get it for another week.  So it's cheaper for me to play games I don't want to shell out $50 for.  I still have a good selection of games (22 GameCube and 16 PS2 games), but why pay $50 for a game I'll only play for a few days?

Yes he did, it was great, and they canned it.  The reason is simple; George Romero wrote a killer script that was actually horror.  Instead they were looking for a movie that appealed more to pop-culture.  I really hated the first movie; I don't know if the second one will be any better, but it's a zombie (HA) movie.  I'd much rather stick to the games, but I'll probably see it because I watch anything even closely related to horror.

My homepage is Bloody-Disgusting and there's way too much out about this movie.  There's something in the news at least every other day; they don't want to keep anything under wraps.  All of these "leaks" are just a different marketing scheme trying to build up hype for the movie (they even created a "scooper" website to release information).

There's a lot out about this movie (I mean a LOT), you can find set pictures, plot... I'm trying to avoid any kind of spoilers (as I do with any movie), but you should be able to find out quite a bit about the film if you search some horror sites.  It's due out in the fall, the official website is here.; and here's a scene.  There's news that this could turn into a long franchise, there's scripts coming up for the third film titled (right now) "Resident Evil: Afterlife".  Nemesis is also in Apocalypse... there's a TON out on this movie if you look... there's script reviews everywhere (I don't know any off hand, as I said I avoid spoilers).

My dictionary says:

1. A person who appears to be lifeless, apathetic, or totally lacking in independant judgement.

2. A corpse brought back to life by witchcraft

Of course the infected from 28 days later were not "type 2" zombies but they did lack independant judgement. I think that they are not conventional zombies, in the same way that the Woman in Black from Susan Hill's book was not an ordinary ghost.

Yeah, I got the DVD the day it came out; but I don't buy what they say.  It wasn't based on suspense like thrillers; horror movies on the other hand are meant to inspire a kind of fear.  That's definetly what I think the movie was going for, especially at a time when all we hear is about the dangers of chemical weapons.

My definition I just copy/pasted from Merriam-Webster online; I figured it was the easiest.

Actually, a large portion of the movie isn't taking place in the mall from what I've read.  I'm trying to stay neutral on this; it's a remake of quite possibly the best zombie movie ever... but then again it is a zombie movie.  What I can't understand is the logic; if they're remaking a classic movie by George Romero, why then is nobody throwing money at George to get him to make "Dead Reckoning" (the fourth movie in the "Night of the Living Dead", "Dawn of the Dead", "Day of the Dead" series)?  Romero did say he's done revising the script, and he's working on a couple other projects.

O'well, at least we have "Diamond Dead" to look forward too (another movie for you to look out for Perm).  It's a Romero zombie film, so it's something!  http://www.diamonddead.com/  Go there and vote for Asia Argento to play Aria!   George Romero's recent diary entry explaining his current projects, etc...  Also, in a recent interview with George (I'll try to dig it up) he talked about "Dead Reckoning" and mentioned that John Carpenter might help him out by doing the score and possibly directing or something... John Carpenter and George Romero working together on a zombie movie?!  **drool**

I know that that also happens in Resident Evil but with this one the people aren't all rotten ect they are just a bit blood-splattered. Great film. Probably one of the best films to come out of the UK.

Good Films that came out of the UK:
Trainspotting
28 days later
Bond Films
Many a comedy antic

"28 Days Later" was a horror movie, and is (in my opinion) the second best UK film out recently.  If you haven't seen it try checking out "Dog Soldiers", it's the best werewolf movie since "American Werewolf in London".  As for whether or not they were zombies in "28 Days Later"; the two definitions referred to are:

1 usually zombi a : the supernatural power that according to voodoo belief may enter into and reanimate a dead body b : a will-less and speechless human in the West Indies capable only of automatic movement who is held to have died and been supernaturally reanimated and

2 a : a person held to resemble the so-called walking dead; especially : AUTOMATON b : a person markedly strange in appearance or behavior

So it just depends on which definition you want to go by. I look at "28 Days Later" as a zombie movie; they might not be traditional zombies, but that was definetly the intention.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Reveals "Third Pillar"!
« on: January 21, 2004, 04:14:34 AM »
The more I think of this the more I like the idea.  I remember when I was disappointed that Nintendo wasn't going to directly compete with the PS2 and Xbox; Nintendo was comfortable with their niche market and decided to stick with it.  More recently Nintendo announced they were going at the PS3 and Xbox Next head on.  I think this is the first step, they're directly competing with the PSP; I don't think they want to allow GBA to be the only option to the PSP... Nintendo doesn't want niche markets with both their console and handheld device.

I still don't think this is a "third pillar" as much as it's a high-end GBA.  The PSP and DS won't be marketed toward the same user-base as the GBA (mainly kids).  Obviously we'll hear more at E3, but I expect this device to compete with the PSP on a few levels...  Everyone's looking at this as a device to JUST play on dual-screens; I believe it's a device to compete with the PSP that allows you to play on dual-screens.  I'm sure Nintendo's been working on the answer to PSP for a while, and I think they want to go head-to-head with Sony in this market; if all goes well at E3 I think everyone could be pleasantly surprised.  Everyone's jumping to conclusions comparing this to VB when we barely know any of the specs.

I don't look for it to be near the price of the PSP, but I'm with you all the way, I don't see this for under $200.  I'm actually surprised (and impressed) by this announcement; yes these things are possible in split-screens, but split screens on a portable device?  I'm happy Nintendo went the creative route instead of simply bumping up the hardware specs and pushing out a new portable system.  Of course this all depends on how third-parties adapt to the concept, so we have to wait and see, but there's a ton of possibilities!

That's what I'm thinking; imagine portable, multi-player FPS (connect two Nintendo DS' together so each has their own screen, and a separate screen for radar).  But through reading the article I kept thinking that this sounds like a creative successor to GBA.  I know it's supposed to be the "third pillar", but if the Nintendo DS is reasonably priced and takes off, it sort of replaces the GBA as the portable system of choice.  This is just a shot in the dark and based on nothing but my own assumptions, but it seems like they're holding off on saying this is the successor to GBA to avoid killing GBA sales.  I just don't see owning two portable gaming systems from the same company as being reasonable.

So I'm holding off until E3, but right now I'm assuming this is the GBA II with an added twist of a second screen (this really intrigues me as it opens up worlds of possibilities).  I believe Nintendo learned something from the Virtual Boy, so they should know hardware won't sell as a gimmick alone.

The Phantom has inspired my brother and I to make our own console; we're hoping to unveil it within the next few weeks... and please, don't let the duct-tape and cardboard fool you!

Honestly, I never put much effort into the Phantom; I figured it was either a hoax or a horrible idea destined to fail.  Even if it's real and sells for $200 I'm still not interested; for that I could buy four new games I actually want to play on a system I know actually exists.  Reading through this thread is the most I've read about the Phantom... I've found bits and pieces here and there, but I don't see how anyone can still have faith that this isn't a hoax or fraud (as I said, I'm not interested enough to learn more about it).
