Interpreting the data is completely unimportant, as it will be another GBA that will be recieving it. In fact, the only real problem is in keeping the data intact as it goes across the internet, and then sending it to the other gameboy in the same form that was sent over the internet.

Lag MAY pose a problem, since distance will be taken into account. When you hook up your gameboys locally, the data only has to travel a few feet. On the internet, it will have to travel much longer of a distance. Whether or not this will be a problem isn't for sure, though, and I hope it won't be.

There is no possible way you could use the Gamecube's Network card with the Gameboy Player.

Someone doesn't know what he's talking about.  The Game Boy Player is actual GBA hardware, and the software is instructions to the GameCube for enhancing the picture and sound.  Games can use the rumble functions on the controller, as well as access the other ports.  I stated very specifically in my Game Boy Player FAQ that online is a possibility if someone wants to pursue it.

You still need the software programmed into it. The project I'm talking about would allow all existing GBA titles to access the internet, and not ones that require special programming. If you have to put the GBA game into the Gamecube to make it playable on the internet, what's the point? You'd need to buy so much for it to just to allow you to play it on the internet, and it would only be available for a newer game that would support it.

I am a college student in a Network Technology course, and my group project happens to be creating GBA Online capabilities. We are creating a cable that links to a USB port, where the information will be repacked and sent over the internet using a tunnelling protocol. There are no real concerns about the computer needing to interpret the data, since with a tunnelling protocol the computer doesn't actually do anything with it, and just packs it and sends it over the internet. The interface we plan on making will be similar to AOL Instant Messager or ICQ, and we hope to implement voice-over-ip if we have the time. We'll also be hosting a website that will allow people to find others to play the same game with them.
