Nintendo Gaming / RE:Games that should be remade for the cube
« on: September 28, 2003, 06:57:10 AM »
Grey, I understand what you're saying, but do you wish Metroid Prime had been such a "sequel"? Not me.

How about Mario 64 vs the side-scrolling classics? That's a tough one. I still feel SMB3 was the best of all the Mario platformers, and it was 2D. Mario 64 was hardly a faithful translation of the 2D classic not to mention Mario Sunshine which had dismal sales. However, when I play Super Mario World or the other classics I have fond memories of on the NES/SNES, they just don't hold the same appeal to me on the GBA. My gaming experiences with today's amazing hardware capabilities have dulled my nostalgia for the classics.

The point is that going into an entirely new direction can be a great thing for a series, or it may not. It's too early to condemn Ninja Gaiden since it is not a finished product. Metroid Prime was GOTY 2002 from most media outlets. Mario Sunshine didn't sell very well. The latest Zelda was a departure from the past and into a new direction of cell-shading, and that game while good, did not translate to huge sales in North America. Metroid had the wildest departure from its classical origin, yet it was extremely successful while Sunshine and Wind Waker were not.

Tecmo has a vision for NG. I'm going to wait and see if it lives up to the hype.

Grey Ninja, that argument makes no sense. What you're suggesting is a 2D side-scrolling antique in the 128-bit generation. Ninja Gaiden is a classic. Let me say again: classic. Meaning it was an incredible game back in its day on the NES (most would argue the SNES third installment didn't live up to the first two), however it is completely unsuited for today's demanding and graphically-spoiled gamer. Tecmo would never do this as only you and say, 2 other gamers would buy it. Recall Contra for PS2? Didn't sell very many copies and they tried to relive the 2D glory days. Bad idea.

If you want a 2D Ninja Gaiden, its only place is on the Gameboy Advance, and you know how that goes...you want a classic? You get THE classic. A re-hash of a once great game. At least on a handheld most gamers can live with that.

Props to Tecmo for modernizing the legend because it's looking great. I remember when naysayers like you pooh-poohed Miyamoto and Retro's decision to 3D/1st-person Metroid, another 2D classic. Every single one of you non-believers ate crow on that one!

You MUST be crazy. Ninja Gaiden is looking fantastic, and exponentially superior to the botched ressurection of Shinobi. Surely leagues beyond Tenchu 3. I just hope it makes Xmas and doesn't slip into 2004. I don't care what system Tecmo would have made it for, it looks tight and definately a pre-order for me. It's going to have the original three Ninja Gaidens as bonuses included as well which is cool. I hope the new one includes some great cinema scenes in the spirit of those that made the original such a classic.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New York Post slams Nintendo
« on: September 25, 2003, 11:05:23 PM »
Gamers these days are always hating on other systems but I play whatever is good fun. I happen to love Xbox Live and probably 50% of my gaming involves it, not to mention most of my Xbox games these days. Ghost Recon: IT, is simply a blast. I'd pretty much given up on the complications of PC gaming online, so Live is the perfect answer for me.  PS2's online gaming is ok (I really like Tribes: AA and wish Xbox also had it), but it tends to lag much more and their lack of any organization to tie it all together is a letdown...and cheaters in games like SOCOM reminds me why I don't PC game anymore.

Make no mistake, the next Nintendo console will most assuredly have built-in ethernet for LAN and online capabilities, and the recent strategic moves demonstrate that (AOL deal). People shouldn't be so quick to put down online gaming when in 2 short years, Nintendo will also be online. The next frontier of gaming is shaping up to be multiplayer -- as in online and wireless, and when I say next frontier, I mean as significant as 3D gaming turned out to be. Profitability? It's all about finding a market model that works. Sony has 750k+ subs and Live has 500k+ subs according to the latest numbers out there. 1.25 million online gaming fans this early in the online console gaming's infancy is nothing to sneeze at. All three hardware makers need to invest in building a base now, to prepare for the future.

In a couple years, we'll be playing the next FZERO and Mario Kart online. I know everyone here would love that.

Nintendo Gaming / NEW Nintendo console to launch in China
« on: September 25, 2003, 03:01:51 AM »
Nintendo is going to release the iQue Player, a machine that can play SNES and N64 games that are downloaded on flash card media, for the US equivelent of $60 in China. The new console is aimed at the Chinese consumers who cannot afford today's high-priced technology. That should limit the market to oh say, 750 million people?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo fans reach 'cult' status
« on: September 25, 2003, 02:21:37 AM »
I've never been a "cult fan" of any system. I remember during the NES days and onwards when gamers really didn't care about system rivalry, they cared about the games. Gamers back then didn't separate themselves into camps and fling mud at the other consoles...it's like today we have PARTISAN GAMING. What the hell is with that?  What's sad is today so many gamers feel as if their game system defines their worth as a person, like it's directly affiliated with their ego or something...heaven forbid someone talks smack about my (__insert system name here__).

I buy every system each generation. This generation was especially incredible, from the Dreamcast to the current triad of systems. Look at the hardware pushing our games these days...it's really amazing! I appreciate the competition among hardware manufacturers...it drives innovation and gaming to new heights. That's the great thing about market capitalism. Shame on those who pooh-pooh the Cube VS Xbox jockeying for #2. Is it better to have a single company shape the gaming landscape according to IT'S vision, as opposed to the demands of the consumer market? No! I'm having the best gaming experiences of my life these days, in fact, there's just TOO many great games coming out on all the systems that I simply don't have time for them all anymore, and that's really something in my eyes.

I bought 67 games this year so far for all 3 systems. Call me a cult fan of gaming...period! Best of luck to Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, and here's to looking to next generation! Bring it on!

Nintendo Gaming / Atari questioning further Cube support??
« on: September 25, 2003, 01:50:24 AM »
Atari just announced that they're cancelling Driver 3, Mission Impossible: Operation Surma, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines from releasing on Cube, while future titles are being re-evaluated.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/451/451351p1.html

What's messed up is Cube is actually still about 500k units worldwide ahead of Xbox yet the PERCEPTION throughout the media and market is what's causing this. Eidos wasn't a big loss, but Atari publishes some good games. This is a shame. Boo!
