Nintendo Gaming / Backwards Compatibility
« on: July 09, 2003, 08:19:42 PM »
It'd never happen... but if they went so far as to *make* it happen, it'd move so many consoles it wouldn't even be funny.

It wouldn't be expensive, either.  As technology grows and old parts become cheaper, things like this become easier and easier... with some of the necessary parts dating back a couple of decades technology-wise, I feel like an NES slot/SNES slot/N64 slot/Game Boy slot would be very cheap.

One thing you'd have to consider is the shape of the console.  Where would the slots go?  How much trouble would it be to integrate five systems worth of parts into one system?

It'd be wonderful.  Lots of people need a way to play their NES/SNES carts.

What a great system that would be.

evilnate, that's actually a great idea.  So add a higher resolution version of Rogue Squadron to my list.

As for Paper Mario, it's far too niche.  It's impractical.  And again, Rare games need not apply... on top of the fact that Rare is no longer Nintendo's company, they also no longer possess the James Bond license.  Besides that, GoldenEye is too dated to be offered as an upped-resolution bonus.  Most N64 games (save the 1st party ones) age *horribly*, especially compared to SNES games which age like wine (and NES games, which don't age as well as SNES but *way* better than N64).

Only the classics need apply.  GoldenEye would be far better represented if EA, who is supposedly doing a new version of it, got Free Radical to be the dev team.  That way, we'd have a remade GoldenEye for GC that was by a lot of the original GoldenEye team.  A simple port would remind everyone exactly how ugly the game is, and that's not something the common public can look on lightly.

Accidental double post.  My apologies.

Unlike Windwaker you don't get the game WHEN you pre-order it, you get it WHEN you purchase the rest of Mario-Kart DD. Then people will buy that "waiting" game and also have the incentive to buy Mario-Kart DD therefore increasing profits all around.

sorry, wouldn't fix the problem.  when you got finished with mario kart dd you would move onto mario kart and mario kart 64 (although why you would want to play those games when you had dd is beyond me) instead of purchasing the next new nintendo game.  they'd still be out the money.

I think that you are totally wrong, kingvudu.  First off, The Wind Waker wouldn't have sold nearly as many copies as it did without the assistance of the bonus disc.  Second, ports of old games are merely incentives for true fans (people who buy Nintendo's product already).  If you think the Zelda bonus disc made anyone not spend money on GC games that they would've spent already, you're crazy... GC users are totally different than PS2 users.  Most of us aren't just looking for a game to play until our next game... the standard GC user seems to me to be interested in *all* good games (and ONLY good games), and they also seem to have a flair for nostalgia on top of that.  The only money Nintendo loses on the bonus discs is how much it costs them to make them... and they gain respect from it in the press, which is worth more than hundreds of times the amount of money they spend on it.  Nintendo needs to do more things like this to help their position, and I think that a bonus disc for F-Zero would not only be a great idea for personal reasons, but for their appearance in the media and on a whole to the entire industry.

Remember Nintendo's position and know that they're fighting an uphill battle.  They need to rely on their backcatalogue, it's on of their strongest assets.  Combined with their high standard for quality in new titles too, it could be one of the blows that turns the tide next generation... if they keep it up, and if the NES 5 is backward-compatible.

Also, in response to why we'd want to play Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64... some of us were around for these games when they came out, and we appreciate and love them to this day.  I still play Super Mario Kart, and enjoy it.  If it (and Mario Kart 64) were available on a pre-order disc, I would be very pleased.

As for my suggestion?  I'm surprised no one has said this, but I would bundle StarFox 64 with StarFox Armada before anything else.  I think SF64 was probably the best game for the N64, Mario and Zeldas included.  I probably would eventually find some way to put Super Mario 64 on the GC as well... however, I'm getting the impression that Super Mario 128 will not be a GC game but an NES 5 launch title instead, so they may have to figure out another way to get it on the system.  Other than that, there aren't many other choices... they've already done Ocarina and the Ocarina Master Quest.  The only titles I'd do bonus discs for would be Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, StarFox 64, F-Zero 64 (plus 64DD add-ons), and Majora's Mask.  Only the five-star first-party Nintendo titles are necessary, anything else is frivelous.  Rare titles, all the like, have no place on the GC.

Hey, I've just got a pretty good idea about it.  I mean, I'm going so far as to bet on the developer, too.

6
Yeah, PSO Episode III is exclusive, too.  It won't be ported to Xbox, at least that was the word as of E3.

I actually honestly think HAL is making a new Kid Icarus game right now.

Remember, if it happens, you heard it from me first.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo and Rare
« on: May 01, 2003, 08:04:06 PM »
Nintendo allowed Rare to use their properties because they didn't have time to make games for those properties and no one else (in the N64 generation) would do any of the work for Nintendo.

Judging Rare by what they did for the NES is ridiculous.  Ooh, Wizards & Warriors... R.C. Pro-Am... Battletoads.  All awesome games, but all close to *fifteen years* previous.  And Banjo-Kazooie?  Please. Rare's overly-tired "find such-and-such item to access such-and-such area" is one of the most boring gameplay progression vehicles ever.  Sure, I may be talking a fake statistic when I mention that nine out of ten people are least interested in Kameo over Metroid Prime 2 and Too Human, but really, I think I hit the nail just about on the head with my guestimate.  No one gives a fourth of a damn about Kameo that knows anything about video games, because it will most assuredly be Banjo and StarFox Adventures all over again.  Jeez, I can't wait for some wonderful graphics followed up with a shoddy story, stale gameplay and a difficulty level that a child could laugh at.

I'll say it again:  I can't believe people stand by Rare no matter what.  You act like you lost an arm or something.  They're a shoddy developer with a terrible track record over the last decade and they certainly aren't going to make anything of any value over at Microsoft.  They're better off wasting Bill Gates' money while Silicon Knights and Retro Studios make good use of Nintendo's time and properties.

You can bet your ass that Nintendo would never let Rare touch Metroid... and you can also bet your ass that Konami would never let Rare touch Metal Gear.  There's a reason Rare didn't get to do legitimate games in Nintendo franchise series outside of Donkey Kong (SFA doesn't count, it's not even a shooter).  It's because Rare was really good for the N64 era.  They just don't cut it anymore.  Their delays are horrible, their work isn't worth the money, and they've got an amazingly huge collective ego that needs to be knocked down about thirteen notches.

Screw Rare.  I'm glad they're gone.  Silicon Knights and Retro Studios are far superior replacements.  They've actually MADE GOOD on the promise of five-star games.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo and Rare
« on: April 29, 2003, 07:36:52 PM »
I honestly don't see why so many people take up for Rare at all.

They turned out a couple of decent N64 titles, one amazing one (GoldenEye).  The only outstanding stuff they'd done at the end of the Super NES was DKC... the second and third Donkey Kong Country titles were horrible and uninspired.

Their games took too long to come out, they were decent at best (outside of a little luck), and weren't worth the hype the Nintendo loyalists heaped on them in the Nintendo 64 generation in the first place.  You'd heap praise on them too (and likely did) if they were the only company truly supporting the N64 other than Nintendo, which they were.

It's 100% fair to judge a company by its last title... particularly when it took them so long and sucked so horribly.  Some of the second party games that came out last year were Silicon Knights' Eternal Darkness, Rare's StarFox Adventures, and Retro Studios' Metroid Prime.  Two of those titles are hands-down amazing, and the other one was the biggest disappointment many of us have ever received.  Nintendo kicked Rare to the curb because they were an overappreciated over-hyped developer who got grandfathered into the new generation with a huge ego from hype based on their success in the *last* generation... where they JUST so happened to not have any competition.  In this generation, however, Rare's many flaws were super-evident the day that SFA was released, and Nintendo had obviously noted their lack of value before we got the opportunity to test the goods as they had the Microsoft deal ready before the fact.

Honestly, guys.  If Nintendo had wanted Rare, all they had to do was buy 2% of Rare's stock to hold the majority.  They looked close and saw what any logically thinking human would see... that Rare was the product of being in the right place at the right time and didn't happen to be worth *nearly* as much as they had been during the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles quality-wise.  Fortunately, Microsoft believed the same thing that Rare did:  that Rare was worth a lot of money, so it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.  It turns out that Rare was indeed worth a lot of money... to Nintendo, as a used-up developer, sold to the richest company in the world.  Do you think they're going to make Microsoft their money back?  Not bloody likely, friends.  A lot closer to impossible.

If you're still not seeing it clearly, think about Too Human, Metroid Prime 2, and Kameo: Elements of Power.  Which one is the one you're least interested in?  Nine out of ten of you will say Kameo, hands down.  Finally, when viewed under good light, Rare has been exposed as the totally weak developer that they are.  I, for one, am glad that they are no longer around to churn out mediocre games on my console of choice.  I'm also glad they no longer have the right to bastardize some of Nintendo's favorite franchises, from StarFox to Donkey Kong.

And yeah, I agree with the idea that many Nintendo loyalists are only turning on Rare because they're with Microsoft now.  There are some of us who actually have genuine disgust for Rare's underwhelming existence... but really, who cares?  At least the fanboys are finally getting it right.  Rare was sub-par all along.

I'm so glad that other people have played and enjoyed this game.

I rented it on a whim years ago and fell in love with it.  It became commonplace for me to rent it about once a month.  One day, I found it at Wal-Mart marked down to $9.99, and I picked it up.  I still play it pretty regularly.

*sigh*  What a great game.

So Marionette = Nintendo going 3rd party !!!

who ever say the otherwise you must have got your info. from Iwata or better yet Yamauchi.

Correct.  You should know by now not to believe Nintendo until you HOLD the product in your HAND.  Even *screenshots* lie, like the Zelda SpaceWorld 2000 shots.

Guesses are fine, but things like "it's a puppet game" that are stated like fact can confuse people, when no one really knows what's up with it.  Message boards start so many rumors through statements like that, and people inevitably get either disappointed or angry when what they expected doesn't come to fruition.

Everyone knows that a marionette is a puppet.  No one contested that.

I just said that it is HIGHLY LIKELY that this game has SOMETHING to do with Mario.

Do you people REALLY think that it's going to be a new property after waiting since StarFox for new games and getting Pikmin and Animal Crossing?  If even PART of the title has "Mario" in it, you can pretty much count on the game being Mario-based.

The point I was making to you, dogcow, is that there's NO real info on this game.  No screenshots, and Nintendo doesn't talk about it.  So until they *do*, it's not definitely a puppet game and it sure as hell isn't known whether or not it's based on Mario or not.

Nintendo may have said something about this game that leads you to believe one thing, but they're also the company that said it was untrue that they were dropping the price of the GC to $149.95 as late as three days prior to the drop.  That was a flat-out lie, and they sometimes use those tactics to hide or disguise their true intentions.

Anyway.

I believe it's either the codename for their online plans/strategy, or a game itself.  It sounds like it could be a type of online Mario game.

I don't think it has anything to do with puppets at all.  And if it does, it's still *most likely* going to be Mario-related... don't think that the name is a coincidence.

Nintendo Gaming / PN03 Discussion

I seriously doubt this'll be bigger than Devil May Cry, due to the significantly lower install base of the GameCube, as well as the less "bad-ass" appearance of Vanessa.  I also think that the futuristic setting of the game, while attractive and marketable, doesn't have the same mass appeal that Devil May Cry's setting has.

Then again, if the gameplay is there, maybe it could move a lot of consoles.  Here's hoping it's not just Devil May Cry with different characters and settings.

Nintendo Gaming / a thing N should do?
« on: February 14, 2003, 06:19:20 PM »
In response to the original topic, rather than doing more interesting peripheral ideas, I think what Nintendo needs to do is something they're already doing:  produce good, high-quality 1st and 2nd-party titles.  They need to do their best to secure some more 3rd party exclusives, though.

People seem to have this idea that Nintendo is losing the console war because they're in 3rd place as far as install base goes.  Last time I checked, the whole point of the console war was to make money.  Microsoft is *definitely* not making money.  They get the third place slot easily.  And between the GC and the GBA, it seems very possible to me that Nintendo could easily be raking in nearly as much cash as Sony is.

If they don't turn the Xbox into anything other than a multi-million dollar loss every quarter, eventually the stockholders are going to have something to say about it, I would think.

Multi-console?  What has been stated to make anyone think that this would be so?  The only multi-console game I can even think of from this generation that Sega did (besides the sports games) is PSO, and the Xbox version isn't even out yet.  I doubt that SA3 will be multi-console... and I'm still not totally convinced that it'll be released for the GC.

Which is, of course, a disappointment.  SA3 will do no better on the PS2 or the Xbox than it would on the GameCube.  As I've already stated, those systems are geared toward adult gamers... the big sellers are GTA3/VC and Halo.  With Nintendo, you get a guaranteed large base of people who bought a system for mascot titles, and hence, you have *guaranteed* good sales for a Sonic game.  SA3 for GC is a good bet, but not a totally safe one... Sega would be wise to keep all of the Sonic series on one system, though, and since they've got a pretty good start on it with the GC already, they *should*, in a perfect world, keep him there.

My mistake, I just remembered Soccer Slam.  Silly me.

Nintendo Gaming / Rumour: Chrono Trigger 2 & Chrono Break?
« on: February 14, 2003, 04:50:27 PM »
I'm having a hard time figuring out why so many people are having trouble dealing with the rumored title "Chrono Trigger 2."  First off, Chrono Cross might have been the second game in the Chrono series, but it was by NO means "Chrono Trigger 2."  If it had been "Chrono Trigger 2," it would have been called... work with me here... CHRONO TRIGGER 2.

What the rumor is OBVIOUSLY trying to say is that this game would follow the further adventures of Crono, Marle, Lucca and friends rather than starting off with another new batch of characters.

With that said, I have zero faith in this rumor.  Square is far too washed up to EVER do something cool like, you know, make a legitimate sequel to the best game they ever made.  The first time they're even going to DO this for one of their traditional RPGs is with Final Fantasy X-2, and if they think that FFX was the first RPG they've ever made that deserved a legitimate sequel featuring the further adventures of those characters, then they are even farther gone than anyone could have expected, and are no longer worth anyone's time, money or attention.

If Square is working on a new RPG for the GameCube like they say they are... that isn't a port... the most likely candidate for the game would be a new Ogre Battle game.  Ogre Battle games *always* debut on Nintendo systems... the only OB games on non-Nintendo systems, as far as I'm aware, are the two on PSX... and those were SNES ports.

So I hope you guys like Ogre Battle as much as I do.

Nintendo Gaming / WHEN WILL THEY ANNOUNCE SSB3!!
« on: February 13, 2003, 03:09:05 PM »
At the very least, I want to see the following characters in the next Super Smash Bros. game:

- Pit
- Little Mac
- Wario
- Toad
- Waluigi
- Captain Olimar
- Peppy
- Slippy
- Tom Nook
- Bulbasaur

I'm sure they'd toss in at least one extra Pokemon, so I just went ahead and picked the coolest one, which is of course Bulbasaur.

As for the stages, I'd like:

- A mythological underworld complete with columns for Kid Icarus... with an Eggplant Wizard that pops out and turns players into eggplants at random.

- A boxing ring, with fans that interact depending on the quality of the match... kind of like how the crowd would chant the player's name, but if the match is really boring, or someone is using the same moves a lot, they'd throw stuff (and it would cause damage).

- A Pikmin level, of course.  One based on one of the bigger ones.

- A Pokemon forest, rather than just a stadium, where wild Pokemon attack.

- A fast StarFox scrolling level where the only thing to stand on were the four StarWolf ships as they tried to gun you down.

---

I think they still have a lot they can do.  Why they included the damned ICE CLIMBERS in Melee and not Pit from Kid Icarus or Little Mac from Punch-Out!! is completely beyond me.  And if you're going to have Fox and Falco, you might as well make Peppy and Slippy too.

Lastly, I'd like for it to be online competitive, but not just "meet some friends online and get to smashin'!"  I'd like a serial number with each copy of the game and registered, online rankings and tournaments.  It's about time people got recognized for how good you can actually get at this game without having to find a tournament in their local area.  They could call it Super Smash Bros World Tour or something along those lines.

There's still more you can do with the game.  Maybe a more in-depth grapple system.  Lots more trophies, etc etc.  New modes of play.  Whatever.  There's more that can be done here, but I agree... I doubt we'll see it for a while.

-- Edit --

And about the last post:

"They should've given him (Mewtwo) Psycic, where he could control an enemy for a short while."

Man, talk about being a totally broken move.  If you had control over the other character you could just walk them off the SCREEN.  That's not useless in *any* mode, and it's far too powerful/annoying/ludicrous to even be *considered*.

Nintendo Gaming / Sega and Nintendo
« on: February 13, 2003, 04:31:48 AM »
I think everyone is seriously getting this all wrong.  Sure, Xbox has more Sega support... but PS2?  Come on.  What do they have that's any good besides Shinobi?  VF4 was horrid, and Ecco the Dolphin was just a port.  It's not like Sony is ROLLING AROUND in Sega games.

And I think the people who bash Sega for "not supporting the GC" are overlooking some pretty amazing things.  So far, Sega's TOP PROPERTY is GameCube exclusive.  If you don't believe that Sonic the Hedgehog is still Sega's top property, take a look at the sales figures... SA2B moved over 500,000 copies (if not more, by now) on the GC, which, as of a few months ago, was more units than the Xbox Sega games *combined*.  They also gave the GameCube first dibs on Phantasy Star Online, one of (if not THE) most-loved Sega title from the Dreamcast.

Microsoft may be paying for Sega games, but they sure as hell aren't selling very well.  Sega saw how many copies of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle they sold on GC, and will continue to give us the Sonic support... which is really all that the GC needs to get back in Sega's good graces.  If Sonic Adventure DX sells well, we can probably expect SA3.

The fact that there are already more Sonic games on the GameCube than were ever on any sole Sega console shows you that they believe in it enough to put their top property on it.  We will continue to get top-notch Sega support in the future... *without* having to wade through the sports titles.

Besides, they're running out of Dreamcast games to port, so it's about time we see some legitimate new stuff.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Puzzle Collection
« on: February 10, 2003, 03:37:42 PM »
I'm a pretty big fan of Nintendo's puzzle games, so I'm hoping this gets a domestic release... but did anyone notice a glaring omission?  Where is Mario no Super Picross?

I don't know if any of you ever picked up Mario's Picross for Game Boy all of those years ago, or if anyone has played the *many* Super Famicom Picross ROMs, but man... I love Picross SO much.  Nintendo made a whole slew of Picross games for that writable cartridge machine in Japan... eight volumes, if I remember correctly.

I haven't heard anything much about the Puzzle Collection other than the games included.  Anyone know if there are going to be any hidden games?  The mere chance of a Picross I can play without my freaking computer would be amazing... and I know they hid a whole lot of extra games in the Game & Watch collection on GBA.

I wouldn't have asked, but not many people are giving the Puzzle Collection too much attention (either that, or there's just no information).  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime 2
« on: February 10, 2003, 02:38:28 PM »
I'm looking forward to the second Metroid game by Retro, and I'm glad it's on the GC.  It can use all the help it gets to sell more consoles.

I do hope, though, that it'll be the last Retro Metroid title.  After this, it's time to do it internally again.  I've lost no faith in Retro at all, but this makes yet another Nintendo property that's being given to another dev. team (regardless of the fact that it's second party), and I'd like for them to prove to me that they can still do it, even though I know they can.  Get the Super Metroid team on it... because I don't care how good Prime is... it was AMAZING... but it just doesn't stack up to Super Metroid, which I feel is probably the best game of all time.

The last thing I really want is for Metroid to stay a first-person game from here on out.

Nintendo Gaming / Do lack of sports game matter?
« on: February 10, 2003, 08:10:20 AM »
Actually, my take on this subject... does the lack of sports games matter?  Not at all.

Sure, there are people who play them on the GC, but face it:  If you bought a GC, you bought it for mascot games.  Sports games honestly just clutter up the shelves.  I've begged for years for a system that pretty much exclusively made stuff that I wanted to play so I wouldn't have to wade through the garbage, and Nintendo just got one step closer with Sega announcing that it will no longer put its sports line on the Cube.

If you're interested in sports games, you're MUCH better off with a PS2 or an Xbox anyway.  GC was always in 3rd place as far as sports go, so if you come to the Cube for sports, you made the wrong decision.

On the same hand, I think they need to can some of the mascot games for Xbox... it's ridiculous that they thought Toe Jam & Earl 3 would be better suited for the Xbox.  TJ&E3 is the kind of stuff Sonic/Mario people would buy, not the kind of thing that Halo/Tom Clancy marks want.

Nintendo Gaming / Should Nintendo buy Midway?
« on: February 10, 2003, 08:03:02 AM »
I think it's ludicrous to think that they're not counting pack-ins, Gamefreak.  Case in point:  When do you see used copies of Super Mario Bros without Duck Hunt on the cartridge?  As far as I know (and I'm pretty damn sure I'm right), they NEVER sold the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge separate from the NES... if you bought those games outside of the pack-in, you bought either Super Mario Bros or you bought Duck Hunt... separately.  Sure, there are a few copies of Super Mario Bros floating around, but if it sold FORTY MILLION worldwide, we'd be DROWNING in them at the used stores... like we drown in Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combo cartridges.

Back on topic, though, Midway can screw off.  Nintendo doesn't need them at all.  If they were to buy ANY company, they should buy Capcom.  And that's it.  Midway doesn't fit with Nintendo like Capcom does... I don't even think Midway is a *halfway* decent game company.
