Nintendo Gaming / RE:Where is Giest?
« on: May 14, 2004, 11:28:40 PM »
I didn't think geist looked all that great.  The graphics were dissapointing to say the least, and the gameplay was gimmicky.  Ghosting into crates and making them explode was kind of fun, but got old pretty fast.  The "out of body experience" animation got old really fast too since you have to sit through it evertime you leave your body.  The Ai didn't seem to spectacular, expecially when you leave your body and the soldiers just leave you alone.  They also don't seem to be all that concerned with their comrades being killed.  If you're going to get a shooter... you should probably pick up advanced wars or metroid.

"Your comparing the advertising power of a multi-billion dollar company to a Fan-site?(No offence to PGC) Also why is Blizzard still in bussiness? don't you think they have costs too? The Blizzard way is a valid solution."

And your comparing a game developer, to one of the biggest forces in the gaming industry.  Blizzard has a handful of games they need to take care of.  Blizzard is not supporting an entire platform and its third party contrubutors.  If nintendo only offers free 1st party games... what makes them different than Sony?  And if its only going to offer free games, you can forget about a persistent online animal crossing.  In then end, what Nintendo is going to do, is going to be no different than what the other companies are doing.  They're just going to be later.  Its not going to be some awsome online utopia where everything is free and fast.

Anyone ever use gamespy?   It sucks.  A pox on any pc game developer that forces people to use it.  If gamespy is any indication I bet Nintendo will have a free service, which will be crap and lack things like stat tracking or even unique user names, and then a gold membership that will give you all the bells and whistles.  Then they could say, "hey we promised a free service and we gave it to you."

This is the bottom line.  Nintendo has said they are holding off on their network plans because of money.  People on these boards like to pretend that Nintendo is all about fun games.  They are not.  They're just another huge corporation out to get your cash.  So why applaud them for denying you something for the sake of their pocket books?

Socom doesnt charge a fee.  Gran turismo will not charge a fee.  What your proposing is already being done by sony.  And you've already seen the numbers.  Nintendo's choices are to 1. be like ms and charge an overall fee for all games, or 2. be like sony and let the developers decide.   Nintendo no longer has the pull to force developers to not charge a fee.  Advertising?  Ask the people who run this site how advertising is doing.   Revinue is drying up every day.  Aside from the fact that you'll already have to pay for internet access and a modem, you'll have to pay a fee for some games.  If by some madness, Nintendo decides to take the choice out of gamers hands, and decides that no company will charge a fee, than that will just mean less games for the game cube.  Some types of games are simply too expensive to maintain.

If Nintendo's intention is to create a perfectly free network... what are they waiting for?  Is Nintendo waiting because they think the market will not bear... FREE online games?  The reason why they are waiting is because they dont think the kids can afford to pay their fees.  Fun be damned.  Like I said before, its a money decision, not a decision about the gamer or about fun.  And I dont think they should be applauded for it.

I pretty sure that the cube games will be less hacked than the ps2 games.  But thats mainly going to be because of the dramatically smaller user base.

Anyone who thinks nintendo is going offer free online play needs to put down the pipe.  Nintendo has said over and over again that the reason why they havent gone online is because they cant see how they can make money off of it.  Nintendo will may you pay, one way or another.  A company so desperately afraid of losing money is not going to maintain servers for free.

And if the network your talking about is the system link, nintendo didnt "think up" anything.  Every system has it.  And its not an alternative to online play.   All the link adds is another screen and four more controllers.  And you dont have to pay for every sony online game.  Its up to the game developer to decide to charge you to play online.  Just like with pc's.  Unless Nintedo goes with something like the xbox live, its going to be the same way with nintendo.  It will be up to each developer to choose whether to charge you or not.  If nintendo forces every developer to have free online, then it will be yet another reason for 3rd parties to stay away.

No company = no fun for fanboys.  There are other systems you know.  Nintendo isn't your friend.  You dont own stock in Nintendo.  And Nintendo isnt on such shaky ground that they cant afford to push an online strategy.

And cheating is a problem on every system.  Any system with a gameshark will have online cheating of some sort.  Everytime someone comes up with a fix, someone else comes up with an exploit.

Actually I do own a cube.  I also own a ps2, with no network adapter, and a dreamcast which I used to play PSO.  Actually I've owned every nintendo system except for the virtual boy.  I had no idea that there are no games that use the system link.  System to system linking has been around since at least the ps1, so I assumed something would be using it.  Actually I think its kind of sad that no game uses it, considering they're trying to push it as an alternative.  They're not making people buy proprietary cables are they?  I dont have 2 tvs sitting in my room, so I dont really care.  In the end all the link cable adds is another screen and four more controllers.  Its not really an alternative for anything.

And when did I ever say anything about the math?  My point is that some people are all a twitter about the low number of network adapters sold, yet they constantly dismiss the low sales of the gamecube and its software.  If sales numbers dont matter then, why should they matter now?  And if network adapter numbers show nintendo to be smart, what do the vastly more important console and software sales show nintendo to be?  If all the game companies were going to be "smart" like nintendo, we'd never have online games because no company would be willing to make the first step and create the infrastructure and user base.

Frankly, I dont even play online that much.  But I also dont play other people in real life very often either.  I prefer solo gaming.  But I can see that online gaming will be important.  If you like playing multi-player games, there no reason why you wouldnt like playing multiplayer online.

As for whoever it was that was talking about faceless noones... I see you dont have a problem talking on a forum with faceless noones.  Online games have buddy lists, and others have live chat features to take care of the faceless noones that you speak of.  You ever have a friend that lives far away from you? You put him on your buddy list, and there goes the problem with the facelss noones.   And nothing says you can't make freinds online.  Ever heard of guilds or teams?  If your good enough at a game, you may get an invite to try out for a guild.  Guilds often have their own web sites and reputations.  If your team is good enough you can become well known.  I think that makes up for the loss of not being able to punch your opponent in the shoulder and giggle like girls.

I'm going to guess that less than 5% of gamecube users have used nintendo's alternative to online, which is the Lan link.  So before you laugh, take a look at your own system.  And if we're going to compare numbers, just look at console sales.  Yep, numbers can be misleading.  So if you're going to dismiss console and game sales numbers, why put so much credence in network adapter numbers?  I bet gba connectivity is just doing fantastic.

For all this talk about nintendo being a game company.... and ninteno being about fun games... I find it curious that so many of you defend Nintendo's decisions that don't have anything to do with fun.  Unless fun for you is watching old japanese ment get richer.  Nintendo's lack of online play is a business dicision... not a discision made based on what they think is fun.  You'll bash online play until nintendo officially backs it.  And then it will suddenly become fun and cool.  GBA connectivity is not a decision based on fun.  Its an idea born out of trying to make more money.  If connectivity really started as an idea to make things more fun... then were are the fun games?  The idea has been around since launch, and there has yet to be one fun and unique function that couldnt be done without it.  Smaller disk size... yet another idea based on money rather than fun.  Yes it shortens load time, but thats not their motivation for having the proprietary disk.  I'm not saying Nintendo isnt allowed to make money, I'm just saying, stop pretending that Nintendo is your friend.  If they thought putting your face on the side of a console and naming it "Billy is a retard" would improve sales, they would do it.  M$ indeed.

On-line play is the future.  Its an inevitablility.  Nintendo is holding back because they'd rather sit back and let someone else do the leg work.  Nobody wants to be first, everybody wants to be second.  Thats the rule in business.  Its fine that nintendo wants to do that.  Just dont confuse them for the market leader anymore.    You know how theres always that movie studio that backs the risky film, and then suceeds.  Then the other studio's jump on the bandwagon and start making rip-offs as fast as possible.  It beginning to look like Nintendo is becomming the latter.

Online play is fun.  If playing against other humans isnt fun, then ask your self why consoles come with more than one controller port.  Are you guys telling me you can't see the fun of challenging other board members to games of mario kart or smash brothers?  Having tournaments with people from around the world?  If someone on the board spouts off about how they are the greatest smash brothers player ever, you could actually challenge them to prove it.

Paying for online is alot like the early days of cable TV.  Back in the day (I'm sure many of you are to young to remember) paying for TV was considered akin to paying for air.  People said it would never work.  Now people on welfare, who can barely feed themselves, feel the need to pay 40$ a month for cable.  If online gaming brings the fun, people will pay.  Broadband gains ground everyday.

Nintendo Gaming / Where did you Guys buy your Gamecube at?
« on: June 30, 2003, 04:59:59 PM »
I bought mine at midnight in a tower record in triangle square at newport.    Their credit card thing wouldnt accept my card, so I had to run five blocks to an atm machine to get the damn thing.  I also had to get a lame bundle that came with luigi's mansion (still in its plastic to this day).  It was worth it though, to be able to play rougue squad at 1 am.

Nintendo Gaming / What Nintendo should do when launching GC2
« on: June 30, 2003, 04:43:21 PM »
Why shouldn't fans discuss what they think Nintendo should do?  Theres nothing wrong with actually having an opinion and not buying whatever nintendo shovels your way.  Just because you think Nintendo is perfect, doesnt mean everyone else should.

Mario killing hookers?  Right, like the ps2's mario equivalent, jak and daxter, is going around killing hookers.  Who wants mario to kill hookers?  Its like saying if GTA3 was put on the GC, you'd be driving around in dinosaurs that you bonk on the head and eating mushrooms.   It doesnt make any sense.

AS for changes I'd like to see.  A memory card that actually has a decent amount of space.   Per kb its one of the more expensive memory cards around.  I also hope Nintendo stops creating proprietary media formats.  It would also be nice if the next console doesnt crash as often, and has more durable controllers.  Better yet it should just pack in a variation of the fantastic wave bird.  Actually I think it would be cool if the thing didnt even have control ports... just frequencies.  TV's and vcrs have been wireless for decades... why not game consoles?  Its going to eventually happen, Nintendo might as well be first.  Think about it.  You just show up at your friends house with your wavebird, set it at a unique frequency and your ready to go.  With ten frequencies, you could have ten players.  And no wire clutter!

I also hope that Nintendo doesnt come up with another lame brain gba/gc connectivity idea.  It wastes valuable resources that could be spent making sure there are good launch games.  They were hyping the damn thing so much at the last two e3's, that I actually thought they had something cool comming up.  I was hoping for wave bird... what I got was virtua boy. Also some sort of online play would be nice.  I know some of you guys are saying that the gc to gc connectivity is enough... but thats old news.  Its been around since the ps1 for god sakes!  And the same problems apply.  You need two tvs.   At this rate, my wristwatch will be online before nintendo.    Net play is the future, Nintendo needs to get off its rear and stop waiting for sony and MS to blaze the trail first.

A hard drive would be nice, but not crucial.  Its nice not needing to worry about mem card space.  All that stuff about speeding up loading time is crap though.  Xbox games still take longer to load.  New, japanese, nintendo franchises would be nice.  AS much as I like the sequels, something new would be nice.  And a more diversified library would be great too.  Niche gamers need love too.

Random speculation here.

http://www.universaldisplay.com/tech.php or just type oled in a search engine.

Kodak and dupont are pushing this new "organic-Light-emissive-display".  Why should you care?  Because, if all their claims are true, it would be the ideal material to use in nintendo's next hand held game system.  It beats lcd on just about every front.  Each pixel is self lit, so no need for a backlight.  Even with the light, it uses less energy.  The cells turn on and off faster so there would be significantly less blurring.  It has a much higher maximum resolution.  Can be seen at any angle.  It seems like a perfect fit.  It also takes less hardware to run, so the next game boy could be even smaller.  The biggest problem?  Target date is estimated to be 2005.  With the psp on the horizon, Nintendo may not want to wait that long before taking the next step with the gba.

General Gaming / Mediocrity-fest 2003: AKA Sequel mania OR E3 2003
« on: May 18, 2003, 02:21:18 AM »
Riiight... Actually the definition states that incest occurs with even near realatives.  But regardless, obviously you dont think there is a problem with boys having sex with mothers and sisters just as long as you are not biologically related.    (Hang around woody allen much?)  And if you actually read the second post, you would see that I mentioned that I knew otocon and his step mother were not blood related.  So stop with the "people should know this, people should know that" crap.  Its making you look dumb.  You are resorting to semantics, and I'm guessing its because you dont have anything else to come back with.

And even if it wasnt true, the whole point of the statement was that mgs' story was sick in some parts.  And it still stands true.  Like I said before, I don't care how blood related you are, having sex with someone that you call mother, and is married to your father is sick.  And what does genetics have to do with anything.  Unless you think the only problem I have with the otocon family circus, is the genetic ramifications.  To compound things, that revelation isnt even central to the story.  It actually takes away from the story, and therefore the rest of the game.

And if we're going to delve into semantics, since you didn't actually go to e3, the best you can say is that ps2 and xbox looked like they had a good show based on web sites you visited.

General Gaming / List your swag!

List the coolest giveaways you got from this years E3.  I only had a lowly green badge, so I'm sure I didn't get the best stuff.  Like the cube backbacks they gave out last year at the nintendo press conference.

I think the best thing I got was the cat in the hat computer mouse.  Its a standard wheel mouse, but the body is filled with water and oil, making it look like the hat is floating in water.

The e-reader card was pretty cool to.

"The first post is utter bulls***. PS2 and XBox had one of their best shows ever. Stop trying to drag them down because Ninty had an awful show and you don't want to feel they were the only ones. "

Best shows ever?  Right.  I guess you weren't their for the unveiling of mgs2.  Where huge crowds stood in awe.  This years trailer was met with snickers.  "eat or be eaten"?  ha ha ha.  best show ever.  right.  "What is this, some kind of grand theft auto?"  utter crap.  I don't know if you went to e3 or not, but looking at the reaction of the people looking at the mgs3trailer this was not the best e3 ever.  Sure, I heard an occasional "yo dog, this game looks tight bro!".  But the general reaction was one of dissapointment.  In fact the only people who seemed impressed were the fanboys who snuck in, or the fanboys who work for websites.  I actually heard some kid weakly say "I am in heaven" as he pranced into the gamecube booth.

"And GCN owners are by far not getting the best version of SC2...Link is justa lamo with cheap-a** moves. Not that either of the other bonus characters are any better."

First of all, this is an opinion.  My opinion differs.  You say link is just a lamo with cheap moves, but that the others arent that much better.  Fine, whatever.  At the very least the cube owners will get a charachter thats interesting to look at.  PS2 owners get shafted with heihachi.  Spawn is ok, but pretty redundant.  How many strong goth guys can you have?  Atleast link is visualy distinct in the game.  If you have a choice between three lamo's with cheap ass moves, you might as well pick the most interesting one.  And for your information, I"m going to be getting the ps2 version of the game.  Bonus charachters are nice, but the other controllers dont work as well with the game.

"There are countless other bulls** points in your post... MGS3 is what you get when a gamedesigner has PERFECT vision of where his game is going, and MGS2 DID NOT HAVE INCEST. For God's sakes, if you're not going to play a game don't open your mouth to spout some BS that you have no clue about."

Did you not catch the dialog between otocon and his sister in MGS2?  I don't care how blood related they are... otocon has a relationship with his step mother, and his step sister tells him she was in love with him.... yes in that way.  "Just for once, I wanted you to look at me not as your sister, but as... a woman."  Pretty sick if you ask me.  But if thats what your into... I can't tell you your wrong.  It might have been forgivable had it meant anything to the game.  Otocons sister dying just ended up saving the gamer from having to deal with an awkward situation.  Sick.  Maybe its you who should play the game.  And why dont you point out the countless other bull crap?  Theres plenty of hyperbole, you have alot to work with.

"GT4 is one of the high points of the show, and that's saying something considering XBox and PS2's line up. The graphics are top notch and the new physocs system makes the game better than ever. You're the only person that disagrees. "

I didnt say the game sucked.  Its just not that different from the other games.  IT wasnt a show stopper.  It looked nice... but so did gt3.  There was nothing really in the game that made me want to buy it on release day.  I dont have a modem, and I dont plan on getting one any time soon.  And the thought of restarting the license course doesnt really appeal to me.

"By 'incest in the first game' I assume he meant MGS2 since one of my friends at school has this annoying idea that there was a lot of incest in MGS2."

I think having one of the charachters in a relationship with his step mother, and then discovering that his step sister is in love with him, would qualify as "a lot of incest."  Unless you're getting some weird games noone knows about.

"And how was XBox's lineup bad? Halo 2, DOOM 3, Counter-Strike? The worst thing I see here is that they're all FPSs..."

I said that halo was one of the shows few highlights... and I dont even own an x-box.  Doom 3 looked impressive... but it remains to be seen if the game is fun to play.  For all we know it could just be another unreal.  Nice to look at, but not much else.  Counter strike is counterstrike.  But I'd prefer to play it on my computer.  Why should I pay for something I can get for free on my computer, and I wouldnt even have to deal with crappy console fps controls.  And besides, its all about bf1942 now anyways.  You happened to miss the 2nd best game of the show... which was crimson skies.  It was far more interesting than doom3 and counter-strike.

"But seriously, everyone likes to think that their favourite company got the best showing. Personally, I feel PS2 had the best show. Others feel XBox got the best show, and of course others feel GCN got the best show."

Well guess what my favorite company is.  I happend to be a ps2 fan.  I also own a gamecube, and will probably get an xbox when halo 2 comes out next year.  Actually, I've owned every major game system since the NES.  And even being a ps2 fan, I'd have to say I didnt see many games that I told myself I was going to buy as soon as they were released.  Each companies booths were practically the same.  Sure they added screens here or their, or an odd desk or something.  But if you took a picture of the booths last year, and just added 2's at the end of every title, you'd have a good idea what this years e3 was like.

On a side note... did anyone catch nintendos "show"?  Wow... I think that was the worst thing I've ever seen.  The giveaways were nice... but the show was horrible.  They had this screen down around the center of the stage with the shadows of women dancing.  Atleast Tecmo had its volleyball game as an excuse for its bikini show.  What were these girls dancing for... kirby's air ride?  Things are made worse by the fact that the music that they are dancing to  is mixed in with yoshii sound effects.  Nothing says sexy like the sound of yoshi screaming in pain.  Then the screen went up to reveal about four vaguely attractive girls dressed in the standard issue booth babe outfit, two running man rejects, and a robin williams look-a-like.  This was the only show during e3 that actually ellicited boo's.  Mainly because they teased the audience with the shadows for about ten minutes, and then showed nothing.  They kept trying to get the audience to scream, but barely got a response untill they started throwing things into the crowd.

But just so I'm not toatlly negative.  Nintendo's booth workers were the most friendly in the whole show.  They didnt even mind when I asked them if I could have two extra e-reader cards and pokemon posters.

General Gaming / Mediocrity-fest 2003: AKA Sequel mania OR E3 2003
« on: May 15, 2003, 11:58:46 PM »
From all the years I've gone to the E3, this one has probably been the most blah.  Alot of the games I've been looking forward to, either ended up being just ok, or utter crap.  Nothing really groundbreaking of mindblowing this year.

Mario kart:  Its mario kart.  Aside from that, I wasnt all to excited by the whole charachter riding in back thing.  I give them credit for trying something different, but for such a high profile franchise, I was hoping for a little bit more.  Still a nice game though.  Going to play it tomorrow to see if someone can control the guy in the back indipendently.

Mario & Luigi:  eh, I'm spending my money on final fantasy tactics.  Mario and luigi have crazy eyes that make them look like they just visited their eye doctor and got those drops that keep their eyes from dialating.  Either that or they are on crack, or are hypnotized.  Just a 10% reduction would make a world of difference.  Not particularly fun.

Star Fox fighting game:  I forget the title... but this game surprised me.  Pretty fun.

XIII:  Dissapointing.  I'm actually a proponent of cel shading, but the way the game handles it turned me off.  At times I felt like I was playing one of those crappy earthink animated commercials.  total loss of depth perception.  And the comic book like screams and yells was pretty lame.

MgsTwin Snakes:  eh.  If you liked mgs for ps1, then you'll like this one.  If you hated it on the ps1... well depending on how much of a fanboy you are.... you'll still hate it.  The graphics and other stuff isnt enough of an improvment to move from hate to like.

Rogue leader:  basically what I expected.  nice game... but nothing mind blowing.  The ground combat isnt the most well designed thing in the world... thank god they still have the flying parts.  For one thing, whenever you enter a room.... for whatever reason the camera is pointed at you so all you can see is yourself and a wall.   You have to run about five steps into a room/hallway until the camera finally swings around and lets you see where you are going.  Frankly, I didnt find the land parts to be very fun.  The game crashed a bunch of times... but so did the first game at e3 2001 and cube club.  Not a problem... just annoying.  The thing I"m most looking forward to is playing th co-op mode.  Dog fighting is basically the starfox dogfighing mode all over again.  lots of turning.  I really wish they could have put the n64 levels in as well, so I could finally finish that damn escape from fest level with a gold medal!

Soul calibur:  oh man, cube owners will definitly get the best version of the game.  Link is a really great addition.  I was expecting them to just give link sophitias moves with a few cusom ones and be done with it.  But Link is probably one of the better charachters in the game.  Plenty of penache.  Makes the smash brothers Link look like a worthless peice of excrement.  The rest of the charachters look good too.  But its not that much of a leap from the dcast game.

1080:  bleh X 10

Pikmin:  As much as I like to play this game... I found myself getting sleepy playing it.  I played it with a friend of mine, and it just ended up being two people playing the one player game with one communal pool of pikmin.  I'm sure later their will be a team aspect.  I tried to stick with my freind, but you only ended up needing one charachter for the puzzles, so I had nothing to do.  So it just became a game about stealing pikmin for whatever seperate project we were working on the map.

MGS3:  What total crap.  If you havent seen the movie yet, check it out.  You will see what it looks like when a game designer totally looses perspective.  The gameplay parts look ok, but it looks like its going to be another bizarre story.  Their was incest in the first game... so who knows what turd nuggets kojima -san will drop on us this time.

Gran Turismo 4:  I have a hard time distinguishing this game from its predesessors.  Online play will be nice... but I dont have the modem.  Other than that it looks the same.

Halo 2:  Looked great.  One of the few highlights of the show.

Conkers crappy game:  Holy crap.  This game looks horrible.  looks like the n64 game in svideo mode.  I dare anyone to say that rare leaving was a bad thing.

Kameo:  I almost didnt see it.  I thought it was wallpaper and just walked by.

Castlevania:  Generic as you can get.  Who cares?  You could re-lable this game vampire ho-down, and I wouldn't notice.  The items are the only thing that seems to connect this game to the previous ones.  And on top of that, its just not that fun.

Spawn:  An ok game.  Probably the best spawn game ever... but that aint sayin much.  Still fun.

Final fantasy tactics:  My favorite game of all time ported to the gba?  Some one at nintendo has been reading my mind.  Good enough for me to overlook the mediocre graphics.

That thing where you can watch cartoons on the gba:  First of all, I guess Nintendo didnt hear you guys, when you were harping about how you wanted your GAME system for GAMES.  Almost looks like a real cartoon.... if you happed to have brain damage and can only process about 10 frames a second.  Its good if you want to keep your mentally disabled cousin busy for awhile.

FF Chrystal chronicals:  Ok.  Not really fun.  I tried it twice, and neither time was it fun.  The gba connections seems pretty useless.  yay, I have a map in my hand... oh buy wait, that means I cant use the greatest controller ever created, called the wavebird.  Maybe they'll think of something usefull in some other part of the game.  Their may have been something to do with the gba later, but I just stopped looking at it after awhile when I went to run around trying to find fun.

Gba controlling a car on a track:  They had this thing where you can control a little car on a track with the gba.  If this is what they're comming up with for the gba connectivity...  really, whats next?  Gba controlled toaster?  They just need to admit that they lied when they said that the gba connectivity was going to be significant.

FF X-2:  I'm just going to chalk this one up to me not understanding japanese society.  Why?  WHY?

Kentia Hall:  Usually the most fun part of the show... this year it was pretty blah.  Still lots of desperate company owners.  But they managed to fix most of their funny pamphlets.  The highlight being " street besketball".

The rest of the sequels:  New levels... new bad guys... maybe some new moves.  The end.  Nothing spectacular.  Just like the booth babes.  Just like the rest of the show.  Although the roast beef sandwich in the sportsbar was spectacular.

This show was inundated with ww2 war games.  I guess thats the hot thing right now.  Just about every publisher seemed to have one.

I know that you guys probably hate me for getting to go to e3, and then pissing all over it.  But thems the breaks.  Atleast for those who hate lots of stuff, they'll get an idea of what it was like.   Times to sleep, one more day of e3 to go, gots to wake up early!
