Nintendo Gaming / RE:F-Zero GX = 10.0?
« on: September 07, 2003, 10:02:23 PM »
I've had the game for about a week now and i think its pretty good.  The sense of speed is amazing and the difficulty is such that the first few times playing a level it may be frustrating but once you get the hang of it then its just a matter of challenge and limiting mistakes.  I wouldn't give it a 10/10 but its definately a sure buy if you like a racing game with awesome graphics and challenging gameplay.  The only thing its missing is online play, oh man that would have been tEh sw33tness.

Thanks for the idea to check my bank account Berto.  Looks like I'll be getting the game early too(or atleast gamestop took my money).  Stil, I only got the standard shipping so I'll probably get it sometime next week.  I guess it pays to pre-oreder sometimes.

I got the same email from Gamestop, but I've been checking up on this and if you go to the website then they have SC2 coming out on the 26th.  Honestly, I don't know which one to believe but if I get the game early then great.  Maybe for people who preordered before the 20th will get it early while people who preorder now will get the next shipment of games on the 26th, who knows.  But I don't want to start this whole crazy Gamestop information thing so to be safe just call and email around.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why is GCN considered to be a failure?
« on: August 09, 2003, 08:43:57 PM »
I think its too early to say if the Cube is a failure, and by what definition would we consider it a failure?  For instance, whether the N64 was a failure is arguable, some people say it was while many claim that it wasn't.  However, almost everyone will tell you the Virtual Boy was a failure, or the Sega CD, or to some extent the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast were both failures.  This is because Nintendo didn't abandon the N64 like it did the Virtual Boy or like Sega did with the Dreamcast.  Nintendo will stick with the Cube until they start making games for their next console.  With that said, I still agree with most of you who say that since people don't think Nintendo has a cool image then the Cube is considered a failure.  But that's Nintendo's fault not Sony's or Microsoft's.
Personally, I'm enjoying the Gamecube just like I enjoyed the N64.  I'll admit that it does get frustrating when the uncool Cube image keeps game rental stores from carrying a large variety of Cube games but I get over it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:what games are you currently playing?
« on: August 06, 2003, 12:13:31 PM »
Gamecube: Hitman 2, NCAA football 2004, NBA Street Vol.2

GBA: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Super Puzzle Fighter II

PS2: NCAA football 2004nline(friend's copy)

Of all those games Hitman 2 gets the most play time, its a really cool game.  I want to see how Freedom Fighters turns out cuz its made by the same people who did Hitman.  NCAA football is pretty good too, I hate the Gamecube version doesn't have online play so I just borrow my friend's PS2 version to play it online.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo Goodness
« on: July 30, 2003, 04:20:42 PM »
I find it somewhat pointless to argue that none of the 1st party games coming out this year can be considered "killer apps".  We don't know if these games will sell good or not, maybe Kirby's Air Ride will be the breakout title that carries the Cube through the rest of 2003 or maybe it will be Zelda or F-Zero.  I don't understand why we get so caught up in "what game is going to sell millions" rather than "what game am I intersted in buying this year".  Just because we think the Cube needs a FPS or RPG game doesn't mean it will be the next Halo or Final Fantasy in terms of sales, it just means a certain portion of Cube owners who like FPS's and RPG's will be happy; which is fine.

Personally, I find this year's titles to be a very solid lineup of games(1st and 3rd party alike).  That isn't to say that I don't think Nintendo should try new things in developing games, or cater to the type of games I like.  Maybe we'll see a lot of new titles next year.

Hey, do you all think this year's games will be harder to choose from than last year's games?  I mean in 2002 it was Mario, Star Fox, RE(remake, and zero), Animal Crossing, Metroid, and Time Spillters.  But this year its Metal Gear(remake), Mario Kart, F-Zero, Soul Calibur, Pikmin(i think its coming out this year), Mario Golf, Zelda, Viewtiful Joe, and 1080.  I didn't think that the Cube could ever top the software released in 2002; but 2003 may just do that.  This lineup is so good that besides Madden '04, I doubt I'll buy anymore games for my PS2 and focus mainly on getting those Cube games.

Nintendo Gaming / Game difficulty? Why so easy?
« on: June 30, 2003, 05:13:57 PM »
I absolutley agree with Mojo here, 3-D games are traditionally easier then 2-D games only because it takes so much time and effort to develop these games that difficulty settings seem more like an after thought in the development stages.  Also casual gamers need that quick sense of accomplishment so developers purposely tone down the difficulty to keep in line with this trend.  With that being said,  I think the N64 had some of the most challenging 3-D games of its era.  Games like Turok 1 and 2 were insanely difficult at times especially when it came to boss battles.  Also Body Harvest is a great example of awesome game design and challenging gameplay.  The Gamecube game library, on the whole, is pretty lacking in the gameplay difficulty area but Nintendo can't be blamed for it because its an industry trend right now.  If you want tough games try the GBA and have ago at Sonic Advance 2.  Getting all the Choas emeralds is near impposible without a walkthrough and some of the latter boss levels are freakin crazy.

Nintendo losing/wasting money? Is that the only reason why they shouldn't have bonus disc of Mario Kart(or any others for that matter).  Come on, the only people who should be worried about Nintendo making profits is Nintendo not us.  If they want to waste money on GBA/GC connectivity rather than online games, let em'; and if they want to keep making bonus disc while losing money in the process, I say go for it.  Personally, I would love to see many of the N64 classics on the GC or GBA.  My picks for a bonus disc would be the Turok series(1,2,3, and Rage Wars) and the Mario Party series.  Forget bonus disc I would be willing to pay atleast $40(USD) for those just so Nintendo could profit off of me.  Look at Sega, they've released the majority of their old Sonic the Hedgehog games on the GC without changing or adding much to them at all.  There is a market for past generation games and Nintendo should be daring enough to atleast explore it some more and I think they will.

Nintendo Gaming / "Game Boy is for 10-year-olds..."
« on: June 16, 2003, 02:45:59 PM »
I'm with you on that one tech, Nokia must realize the negative hype they've been getting around this system since its introduction.  Even the most liberal gaming websites and magazines have showed a silent disinterest in the N-gage.  Thats why I'm almost positive that they'll clean up some of its most glaring faults(price tag, screen size, taco shape)before the N-gage is launched because it would be stupid not to.   The comments made by the Nokia rep obviously means that the N-gage is going to compete directly with the GBA; which, as I stated in previous post, will send the N-gage straight to hell.  If it was marketed as the super advanced technological wonder that "oh, just so happens to play 3-d games" then they could garner interest from cell phone users and young gamers alike, but at this point who knows what they'll do.

I'm not against the idea of multiple handheld consoles but I don't understand how it will be possible for systems like the PSP and N-gage to successfully compete directly with the GBA.  Look at systems like the wounderswan and NeoGeo pocket, both had only moderate success(in Japan at that) when competing against the likes of Gameboy color.  I hate to write off a console before launch but to say that either PSP or N-gage will topple the GBA is too strong a statement right now.  Surely both systems will sport enhanced 3D graphics and online capabilities which cannot be had on the GBA.  But Nintendo still hasn't realized the full potential of the GC/GBA/GB player connection technology either, and once they do owners of these systems will have less reasons to go buy Sony or Nokia's offerings.  I am intersted in the PSP(not so much the N-gage)but the price tag and batterylife are big issues with handheld systems.

Hey anybody know if Nintendo loses any money on the GBAsp hardware and if so how much?

Really, the vaporware known as the psp only has one thing going for it and thats Sony's influence over 3rd parties.  They could force developers to make exclusive games for the psp or port over GBA exclusives.  And Nintendo would have a problem on their hands if, in addition to its many features, the psp is under $200(american) and can sustain atleast 20 hours of rechargable cell battery life, giving only more incentive for developers to slow their GBA development in favor of the psp.  Besides that "teh nintendo iz kiddie" talk won't work for them as it has with the Cube.  Like the PS2 the user base of the GBA is enormous and nintendo has all the(and only)3rd party influence in the handheld market now.
It'll definately be interesting to see how things work themselves out.  Personally, I think competition will be healthy for the handheld market and I want Sony and Nokia to bring out the goods that will revolutionize handheld gaming.  They do have a huge mountain to climb though ask Atari(Lynx) and Sega(GameGear/Nomad).

Well Nokia can forget even the most curious nintendo fan playing their new N-Gage.  Obviously, they're trying to hype its system to PS2 and Xbox owners who want to be "cool" but the thing is they all own(or have owned) a GB system.  The GBA's popularity is amazing, I mean its in a totally different market when compared to the home consoles where nintendo bashing seems to work.  And the $300 price tag doesn't help Nokia's cause, and they have to know it.  Nintendo owns the handheld market(for better or for worse)with the new SP is only solidifying this fact; I'm not saying that Nintendo can't be challenged in this market but if Sony and Nokia can't offer a superior and cheaper product then no amount of "nintendo is kiddie" rhetoric will save them.

Nintendo Gaming / Worst GC game ending
« on: April 09, 2003, 10:28:23 PM »
I don't really like commenting on game endings because of the major spoil factor but Star Fox Adventures ending was so bad, it was not very rewarding for me.  Metroid Prime's ending was alright but after I beat the final boss I didn't realize I was at the end of the game until the credits started to roll.  I wouldn't say that any of the Cube game endings are terribly bad but some definately leave you wanting more.

Nintendo Gaming / So what's up with Capcom?
« on: April 04, 2003, 01:28:25 PM »
What kind of "support" can they take from the Cube?  I mean aside from the RE series what has Capcom given the Cube that us Nintendo gamers would miss anyway?  The Capcom 5 looks promising but the PS2 is the console that has and will get most of Capcom's support.  I'll never understand this philosophy of "Xbox has low software sales, so lets stop making Gamecube games."  Capcom is already a multiplatform company, but if they want to go all the way then they should put all their games on all consoles.  Which means Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and Resident Evil for everybody.  EA does it and they're one of the top 3rd party developers in the industry right now, so its a proven formula that should work for Capcom.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Fans vs. the Third Parties
« on: March 26, 2003, 08:18:08 PM »
So where does the blame go?  3rd parties, like all game developers, are trying to make money.  I can't blame them for releasing small shipments of Cube software, especially when the games aren't selling well.  What angers me is when the games are delayed and/or are of poor quality.  But we should have all seen this coming; Nintendo hasn't given us a reason to go out and buy 3rd party titles.  Starting August to November 2002  we saw some big 1st party titles coming out less than every month or so(Mario Sunshine, StarFox, Mario Party, Animal Crossing, Metroid).  5 big name exclusive titles in 4 months is unheard of with Nintendo, so Cube gamers were more than satisfied and the sales charts had showed it.  I enjoyed the shower of games but maybe this is one of the reasons why Cube 3rd party sales have suffered.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Fans vs. the Third Parties
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:13:07 PM »
I think the topic of this thread speaks for itself....."Nintendo Fans vs. the Third Parties".  If you're a big fan of Nintendo then obviously you've bought the Cube and most of the 1st party Nintendo games.  I think the problem is that 3rd parties compare software sales of all 3 home consoles(two of which live off 3rd party support)and only look at the bottom line which has the Cube lagging in 3rd party sales.  Still there are some Cube owners who want better/more 3rd party support and I think they deserve it.  Nintendo does make the majority of great games in this industry but if you don't own a PS2, or GBA for that matter, you are missing out on some of the best nonNintendo developed software around.

I enjoy watching sports and playing sports videogames.  Haven't been able to go out and play real sports with any of my friends lately but spring break and summer will change that.  I grew up playing sports games on the NES and SNES.  There were plenty of sports games on those Nintendo consoles, only recently with the N64 and the Cube are we seeing a decline.  I only own 3 sports games on the cube however(NBA2k3, Courtside, and Madden2002).  If you don't like playing sports videogames I think thats alright, I don't care much for traditional rpgs or MMORPGs like Skies of Arcadia or Phantasy Star Online.  Its normal for gamers to have different taste, and I think companies like Sega and EA should realize this and continue to make sports titles for the Cube.

Nintendo Gaming / MGS on GC - How Would it Handle?
« on: March 10, 2003, 09:28:32 PM »
Obviously Konami has looked at the sales of the RE series on the Cube and atleast now believe bloody games can sale on the system in both Japan and North America(don't know about the UK).  The sales of REmake were pretty good and also RE0, but the straight ports(and that god foresaken price tag)of RE2-3 results in poor sales.  If Konami were to bring MG over to the Cube if would have to be of some quaility especially if they are developing it with Nintendo.  Personally, I'm hoping for a total remake of the original NES Metal Gear but in reality, even with Nintendo co-developing the project, the least we'll get is a port of Substance.  Inwhich case I'll only buy it if Nintendo packs an e-reader card with the original NES Metal Gear game on it, this too though is unlikely.
