Nintendo Gaming / RE:Splinter Cell 2 Online for GameCube
« on: December 17, 2003, 12:55:43 PM »
To the best of my knowledge, the single player campaign of Pandora Tomorrow is developed by Ubisoft's Shanghai studio in China, the same house that did the PS2 and GCN ports. The multiplayer is being done by Ubisoft Montreal, who are also developing a separate Splinter Cell game, presumably due for release after Pandora Tomorrow.

No, more like Viewtiful Joe or Prince of Persia or the Zelda Collector's disc or BG&E or ROTK, to name but a few.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:idea for next mario kart
« on: November 24, 2003, 08:24:54 PM »
My biggest wish for the GC Mario Kart was that they would include all the Nintendo characters, ala Smash Brothers. That, and online. Hopefully they'll do both next time.

A Diddy Kong Racing-like Adventure mode would be very cool also I reckon, although I don't think moving the racers into planes and boats is a good idea.

Also, more tracks are needed. 16 is just too few. At the very least they should create 20 new ones and include upgrades of the 16 from Double Dash and perhaps MK64 as well.

Rebel Strike is terrible on so many levels I don't know where to begin, and this is coming from someone who enjoys most Star Wars games and really enjoyed Rogue Leader.

Some of the more obvious flaws include:
* They rehashed the entire front end, even going so far as to use the same movie clips.
* The control of both the speeder bike and the tantan was dreadful.
* The on-foot missions are worse than what you have read. The control terribly, and are buggy as hell. I got stuck in a rock on the Dagobah level about 3 times in 10 minutes of playing.
* Some of the on-foot animations can be described as placeholder at best.
* When you are flying in a ship, the new, much talked about water system looks like a poorly mipmaped texture consisting of 3 shades of blue (read: terrible).
* There is hideously obvious color banding on a couple of the ground levels.
* Their new lighting system adds absolutely nothing to the game.
* I walked through the entire game in 2 nights.

It is worth nothing that it wasn't all bad. The flying missions were as fun as ever, even if they did play exactly the same as the RL missions. Also, a few of the missions controlling AT-STs were cool.

My advice would be for everyone thinking about buying this game to rent it first. I thought it was so bad that I returned it, something I have not yet done this generation with any of the 50+ other PS2 / Xbox / GameCube games I own.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:introduction and a few intresting rumors
« on: November 18, 2003, 05:35:20 PM »
Am I the only one who thinks that the fact that you "can't say much for risk of getting fired", yet then proceed to only post stupid rumours found on various online forums just doesn't add up? Nor does your use of grammar for that matter.

Regarding your 'rumours':

1. I haven't a clue if Nintendo will release the Spice Cube with Donkey Konga, but I guess it could make sense.

2. Capcom have stated that they would like to port VJ to PS2, but are concerned whether it is technically possible. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be as Joe doesn't do anything the PS2 couldn't handle. I personally hope they do release it for PS2 as it deserves to sell a lot more than it currently has. A GBA version could be cool also, although I think there may have to be some control sacrifices made for that to happen which would suck.

3. There will never be a harddrive for the GameCube. That is a bollocks rumour that has no substance.

Do any of my fellow Australian's know if it is possible for us existing GameCube owners to get a copy of the latest Zelda bonus disc?

Nintendo Australia's site is proving to be as helpful as usual regarding such info.

I don't believe it has been announced for PC as of yet, but it wouldn't suprise if such a version were to release next year, assuming the console versions sell well.

Just to let everyone know that I picked up True Crime for AU $58 last night at Kmart. They are having a store wide 15% off everything (except consoles) sale. That's a pretty good bargain considering I walked into EB afterwards and saw the PS2 version for $99.

There isn't really a need for EB to advertise the deal anymore than they currently are, and I would bet that most stores will have long since been out of stock of the steering wheels. Most likely the deal came about because a purchaser at EB bought a heap of the wheels at a cheap price, they never sold, so EB decided to clear out their warehouse by practically giving them away with Mario Kart. It's got nothing to do with Nintendo Australia. It against their interests to make deals with specific retailers.

But Gamecube sales are the best they've ever been now- if anything 3rd parties should be reinstating their cancelled Gamecube projects (which, according to IGN, a lot of publishers are doing). Even if the Gamecube wasn't selling as well as it is, there's still no reason to simply delay the game. Either cancel it or launch it on time, nothing else.

While I appreciate that this post probably doesn't belong the True Crime thread, can I just say that the reason the GameCube versions of a lot of 3rd party titles seem to be an afterthought is generally because a GCN SKU simply doesn't sell as well as it's Xbox or PS2 counterpart.

And even though Cube sales have picked up since the price cut, the sales of 3rd party games is not likely to change a great deal as a result of the larger user base. Most people who by a GameCube at $99 will most likely already have a PS2, Xbox or both. They would be enticed into buying a Cube now because there might be a couple of GC-exclusives that interest them, and at such a low price it is hard to say no. And these new Cube owners will more than likely keep buying their 3rd party product their original console, not the GameCube. Things could turn out differently I guess, but I personally don't think they will.

I also think that your "Either cancel it or launch it on time, nothing else" comment is a bit over top. Personally I am generally happy that a publisher gives me the option of playing their game with a GameCube controller, and if I have to wait a bit for that privilege I will. I certainly would prefer not to have to wait, but if I have to choose between either a short wait or not getting the game at all, it's a pretty easy decision.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, and I thought some may be interested to hear that it seems Nintendo Australia are subsidising the publishers of some big key 3rd party titles. Both True Crime and THUG will retail for $69.99 when they release, and Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu will go for just $49.99.

Given the size of the PS2 userbase, that was always going to happen, and is probably exactly what Namco expected.

The diehard GameCube fans who generally buy 1st party Nintendo product the day/week it ships were enticed into doing the same with the GCN version of Soul Calibur 2. But in the weeks that followed, most GameCube owners that were interested in the title had already bought it, but the many casual gamers who only enter EB every month or so saw and bought it for PS2.

I managed to track one down at the City store, and I just got back from collecting it (along with Rebel Strike). Lucky I went over lunch rather than waiting until the weekend, because I got the last one, and the guy in the line behind me was also after one but missed out.

Thanks again for the heads up Mario.

Cool thanks for that info. I just rang up my local EB but they are currently out of Steering Wheels unfortunately. I guess I will have to try some of the stores further out.

Are you sure you haven't seen a similar deal offered at other stores?

Really? Is that through a special retailer, or is it the standard offer? That sounds almost too good to be true!!

Do you have a link where I can get more info? As usual, the nintendo.com.au is void of anything useful.

Mario, do you know what dates we get 1080 and Mario Kart? What about the Broadband adaptor? Also, any idea if we get the Mario Kart bonus disc that the US version comes with?

Cheers for any info,

If you are happy with 6 months delays, you are a much more patient gamer than I. That said, in most cases it doesn't really affect me a great deal because I just import the titles that interest me when they release in the US, usually at a cheaper price than what I pay in Australia, and by the time they do end up releasing over here I have long since finished them.

I am simply saying that I personally find the current delays to be inexcusable and unacceptable, and that minor technical issues and translating text are not the cause of such delays.

Such delays are generally the result of slackness on the publisher's side getting the developer the translated assets and / or a publisher delaying a title to fill gaps in it's release schedule (eg, Mario Golf).

cml, think about what a big job it is porting games to Europe.

First, you have to translate the game into 5 different languages.  I am personally well accustomed to waiting 6 months for games to be translated to English when coming from Japan.  But with PAL, you also have to modify the game so it runs properly on a TV with a bit higher of resolution and a lower refresh rate.  If you think that doing all that is easy, then you need your head examined.

I don't really need to think about what a big job it is, because I know full well what is required to create a PAL SKU of a game. Assuming you have an English version of the game, translating that game into 5 other ASCII languages really shouldn't be that much of an issue. Some languages, German in particular, can make things difficult because of long strings forcing you to redesign text placement in some instances, but that issue can generally be dealt with a minimal amount of fuss.

As far as the graphic differences go, modifying a game to run at a slightly different resolution and a lower refresh rate is relatively painless, assuming of course you took such considerations into account more than 2 weeks before you are due to deliver the gold master.

Like I said, even though I despise it I can handle 1 months wait for a PAL version, but there is absolutely no excuse for the 6+ month delays that are so often the norm.

For whatever reason, Nintendo has always treated PAL territories like it is doing us this huge favour by even releasing it's products in such territories. Europe has certainly got it worse that in Australia. Obvious examples include the earlier release of Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire and the fact that we have actually got Animal Crossing.

But both Sony and Microsoft have proven that not treating PAL gamers like they are 3rd world citizens is well worth the effort. Nintendo had better not make this mistake again with the launch of the next console.

Personally I hate waiting even a month as a game is localised for the European market, but I can handle that. What I cannot stand is the 6+ month delays Nintendo are famous for. There is absolutely no excuse for such delays. None.

If you want to blame someone for not getting sufficient copies of SOA, blame Infograms / Atari. It is they who are responsible for publishing Sega's product in Australia, not Nintendo.

Why would / should Nintendo advertise during the day? They should advertise during the periods of the day when their target market are actually watching TV. I.e., during prime time. They have gotten a bit better recently, but that is not saying much.

Also, Nintendo don't need to FORCE anyone to air their commercials. All they have to do is pay the broadcaster and they will air it.
