Nintendo Gaming / Re: Swapnote from Reggie & More New Stationery!!
« on: November 02, 2012, 06:02:13 PM »
So, does anyone here have the new Pokemon stationary to send to me?  I don't play the games any more, but I do like to collect all the stationary that's released.

Wait, you weren't planning to buy it at launch before?

I guess I can see why, after New Super Mario Bros 2 everyone's a bit skeptical of the NSMB series.

Is it me, or are this company posting the same topic on every single Nintendo forum in existance?  Or at least a bunch of them, saw the exact same topic on GoNintendo.

I know it's a bit of an old topic, but no one's talking about the new footage Game Explain posted, or the stuff IGN featured on their site?  You've got footage of Morton Koopa Jr and Bowser Jr battles, pictures of Boom Boom and Kamek and all sorts of stuff.

Have to say, I'm getting more excited by every batch of new screens and videos.  You can also see some summaries here:

Anyone with a costume based on the Redeads from the Legend of Zelda or (as one person in the article said) Dead Hand would be extremely unwelcome in my opinion.  I have enough bad memories of seeing those monsters in the actual games.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:48:59 PM »
As far as I know, the 3DS was only sold at a loss after the price cut, and they eventually got development costs down enough that now it's being sold for a profit again.

I'm as shocked as everyone else about the Wii U being sold for a loss though.  While that may make it cheaper, did they not learn from Sony's financial woes?  Because the PS3 was being sold at a loss, and it pretty much cost Sony hundreds of millions of dollars as a result.

TalkBack / Re: Steps to Writing a Better Walkthrough
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:46:40 PM »
My personal pet peeve: when writers gloss over the part I am looking up the help for. I hate when I read a section and it says "this fight is easy, just kill the monsters" or something like that.

No kidding.  This is pretty much the one reason GameFAQs has always annoyed me, many of their guides are just like this and assume everyone's either an expert at the game or just plain lucky.  It really, really felt annoying when trying to get Mario Galaxy 2's Green Stars and other similar stuff.

Here's a tip that wasn't mentioned though...

If you're not writing your guide as an FAQ for GameFAQs or perhaps IGN, you don't need to limit it to text only.  If you're writing it for a website (maybe one you own/are staff are), try and use images and perhaps video clips where relevant to help people out in regards to things like where to aim or where to go or maze solutions or similar puzzles.  It's always bugged me when I see a not GameFAQs site host their own walkthroughs and then not use the chance to use other media to make the instructions clearer to the player.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Last Story sells...
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:36:47 PM »
I'm skeptical about this as world.  I mean, I guess you could say the amount of people sending playtime data for games has a very, very loose correlation with the game's popularity, but as said, most people don't send the data.  Heck, I know I don't send any playtime data to anyone, so whatever games I play aren't being counted in any of these stats, and I'd expect many others are the same.

And even then, is it really that low?  It's about the same as what Xenoblade got, and to be perfectly honest, I'd suspect a significant amount of people didn't buy the game due to how late it came out in the Wii's lifespan.  Maybe they just moved on to other things by then.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Street Pass!
« on: October 21, 2012, 07:18:59 PM »
Meh, you guys are lucky.  It's bad enough getting StreetPasses in the US, but getting them in the UK must be even harder.  You can go round central London most of the day and maybe get four StreetPass hits at best.

Oh, and whole countries aren't represented?  What kind of madness is this?

General Gaming / Re: IGN up for sale
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:44:45 PM »
I think the reason the site's being sold is that it wasn't particularly profitable, I've heard some people say it cost a fortune to run and didn't make enough of it back from advertising.

Of course, much of that's probably due to them trying to expand too quickly and hiring too many people who don't know what they're doing.  Maybe if they cut back a bit the site might both improve the quality of its content and manage to turn a decent profit.

I've just e-mailed Justin at Pure Nintendo, and he confirmed that the staff there did not in any way provide the rest of the funding.  Here's the quote:

Quote
No, we did not provide the final funding ourselves.  Throughout the Kickstarter we were approached by a few investors that were interested in the project.  Some of these investors wanted to see us reach certain goals on the Kickstarter before they would back the project.  In this case, once we got past the $15k mark, the investor was willing to back the rest of the project

NWR Feedback / Could the staff here try and fix these talking ads?
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:21:11 AM »
I swear, I've been on quite a few pages and had videos start automatically playing complete with sound.  It's annoying to have to search the page and look for a small button to disable the sound, so could someone try and remove these ones?

One of the culprits so far was a small ad for a cleaning product that sounded like it was meant to promote Come Dine With Me or something, because it had the same narrator.

TalkBack / Re: 34 Minutes of Paper Mario: Sticker Star Gameplay Footage
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:16:54 AM »
Have to say, I'm kind of impressed by the game so far, and more so from the video.  It seems like Bowser Jr and Kersti have at least some personality in this game, I like the battle system despite the lack of partners and it does seem like the game might have a few plot twists to make it more interesting (as in, have it turn out Bowser isn't the main/only villain).

14
I hope this is accurate.  Because not only does Sakurai working at Nintendo and Miyamoto working on new IPs sound awesome, it means we might get more interesting stuff in the Mario series too.  I mean, think back to Galaxy and how apparently Miyamoto got annoyed that one of the other people working on it wanted to put more story in the game.  Or some of the design decisions with New Super Mario Bros. I'd love to see some more new ideas in the series.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last TV show you've seen
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:01:29 PM »
Last show I watched was Dragon's Den (equivalent to the US program Shark Tank I think).  It was pretty decent, I always like seeing what inventions and businesses people bring in, but I've watched so many episodes by now I can pretty much predict everything that'll happen merely by looking at the clock and seeing how much longer is left.

Last fictional show was Only Fools and Horses, can't say the episode I watched was my favourite one.

If there's nothing ethically wrong in what Penny Arcade did, there's nothing 'wrong' in what Pure Nintendo may have done either.  Not that I think what either group did was ethically wrong in any way, and hey, no one donated based on false premises.

Just three worlds?  Even the Mega Drive/Genesis original had more than that!

Hope these are long levels or that there are some secret ones, otherwise this is pretty appalling value for money.

Just e-mailed the admins of the site to congratulate them for making their goal.  Like others here, I didn't expect them to make it, they were a good few thousand short just sometime yesterday.

I remember these.  The Chris Hoy one was pretty cool, as was the (for whatever reason not yet listed there) one where they interviewed the business people supposedly shutting down the magazine (I think that was in their final issue).

Hope they keep making them for the online only version.

I'm new here.  Obviously not new to the internet, I'm a member on GoNintendo and Official Nintendo Magazine among a ton of other websites.  But hey, I read Nintendo World Report as well, so I may as well register so I can comment on articles and reply to a couple of forum discussions.

I'm a more of a fan of Mario, Zelda and Smash Bros than any other Nintendo series, so expect any posts to be about those.

Welcome! I hope you'll find our community to be friendly and to see you around the forums.

Thanks!  Also, kudos to Nintendo World Report for having staff answer new members.  I always like to see a forum where the staff are actually part of the community and not just around once in a blue moon.

The community here looks fine so far, so I guess I'll check out some of the other topics soon.
