This is always shocking for me.
At least I'm getting a bit of exercise:
1,100,273 steps taken

1. StreetPass Mii Plaza 114:18
2. nintendogs + cats 51:40
3. Zen Pinball 3D 26:43
4. SuperMario 3D Land 23:28
5. NewSuper Mario Bros. 2 23:07
6. Mario & Luigi (Dream Team)  21:20
7. Mole Mania 20:49
8. Marvel Pinball 3D 18:53
9. Pushmo  18:21
10. Pilot Wings Resort 17:24

Coming up quick, though:  Louvre 3DS guide - played it on the whole plane trip without ever putting in a game.

Nintendo Gaming / Durability

Anecdote:
Last night, while playing Super Mario World on the Wii U with one of the kids, we had a visitor knock on the door and I set the Gamepad down to answer. It promptly fell off the couch arm onto the hardwood floor making quite a racket. I didn't even flinch. I never dreamed it could get hurt.
Later, I picked-up the gamepad and examined it and found nothing wrong. We went back to playing the game, with me mainly using the gamepad just as before.
The reason I think this is awesome is that if I had been playing on the PS4 and dropped my Vita or with Xbox One and dropped the Ipad, I would've been extremely concerned. Using the Wii U gamepad has been a real boon to our family's experience with the "second screen" being much more valuable than I ever expected.
Anyone actually damaged their Gamepad through normal use and occasional accidents? Six months and going strong over here.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns announced for 3DS

I recently played the Wii version again  - I only made it about 30% of the way into it when it first came out - and I found that I would really like to see it in 3D. I think that the 3DS makes all of my 2D platformers look alot better. I can't wait for this game and the extra levels. I don't mind the double-dip - it is a different console. I'm used to Xbox games releasing an "enhanced" edition usually a year later.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii U themed gamepad art
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:48:22 PM »
I have yet to jump onto the Wii U train, but after the PS4 announcement this week, I feel that Nintendo has a real opportunity to differentiate and jump ahead of Sony with the Wii U Gamepad. Where the PS4 controller glows different colors to differentiate players, I think that there should be more noise about the fact that the Wii U gamepad can completely morph into a new controller with each game.

I grew up in the Intellivision era and was always fascinated with the controller overlays that shipped with each game that made it feel like a custom controller. It visually identified itself with the game you were playing and, in that era at least, sometimes enhanced the game with excellent artwork that influenced my appreciation for the on-screen graphics.

With the Wii U gamepad, I appreciate that the controller can be used as a second monitor and for additional screen information, etc. But how about just really cool art that displays throughout gameplay to make you feel like the controller is themed or customized for the game you are playing?

Since I have not played with the Wii U, yet, this may be a stupid post because they are already doing this. However, I have not seen much information about this in the reviews I read. It definitely could differentiate the gamepad from PS4 controller that only can flash a color.

TalkBack / Re: Ikachan Review

I think the 3DS is the best way to play these games - at least, for me. I wasn't aware of this title until I heard you discuss it on the podcast and I'm glad you did - purchased it immediately and have been having a lot of fun. I think the extrapolation and innovation of simple controls is what I enjoy most about videogames and Ikachan has a unique feel to it. Definitely recommended.

I'm not sure why people found the music in Bubsy so annoying. My favorite song wasn't used in the trivia cast; Tunnel Vision found here at Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IodFDDnhqL8
I find some of the sounds that come out of the Gameboy questionable, at best, but still am able to recognize when it works within context. This music worked real well on the SNES with the style of game that was Bubsy. I remember playing Bubsy back in the day and was very impressed by the speed of the game and use of colors and sound.  ;D
Not having a Sega Genesis, I looked forward to a Sonic-style platformer and Bubsy was lots of fun.
Neat trivia - the game was developed by legends of the PC Game era: Marc Blank and Mike Berlyn. They made Zork.
As for Bubsy 3D on the PS1 - this was a launch title (or launch window) that I loved, too. For some reason I've always been engaged by the use of cool technology and Bubsy 3D was an astonishing game for the era. It was one of the few games that used the Hi-Res mode available on the PS1. Granted, it had gameplay problems, but I played that game all the way through to the end. Same with Blasto!

TalkBack / Re: The Rarest StreetPass Puzzle in the World
« on: September 26, 2012, 02:47:32 PM »
I've been extemely disappointed with the number of streetpass hits I get in America. I travel alot and always bring my DS. While wandering through the airports of San Jose and San Francisco several times the last few months I'm lucky to get one streetpass (usually from Japan!). I've walked my kids to school with the DS in my pocket every day this year and have never gotten one. Maybe the kids aren't allowed to bring it to school? I think it is more often that the terrible battery life makes the 3DS much less portable than it was in the day. The only time I've really gotten a lot of streetpasses is when I parked my car for the day in front of a Gamestop when I was at a hotel convention. I got 4! Woo hoo.
Also, I'm being driven crazy by the fact that I have two pieces left for 3 puzzles and have spent the past six months purchasing duplicates of every other piece all around it. These are NOT the pink pieces. I'd much rather spend 10 or 20 coins to get one I need.
