Nintendo Gaming / RE:Resident Evil 4 Discussion
« on: January 11, 2005, 05:07:59 PM »
Haven't posted in along time, so
Here are some impressions of the first chapter without spoilers:

The graphics and especially art direction are great. There is some excellent use of subtle colouring with reds, and greens that really eccentuate the superb modeling. And the brown tone of the game works too, unlike Resident Evil 0.

The level design keeps one of the core fundamentals of the Resident Evil series, Exploration, despite a rather linear progression path. Nooks  and alleys and little hidden treasures keep the spirit of discovery alive with in simple, limited maps. Great work.

The group dynamic of the villagers is exciting, adds tension and provides a satisfying strategic experience as figure how not to die.
That said, the A.I. can be weak on occasion, when villagers stop approaching you because you backed off a fair bit.

There are some really neat special effects that the GC is doing. Hopefully we'll see other games that use these. (Please Capcom, use this engine for one more game on GC, any game.)

For those of us that played Resident Evil: Code Veronica's 1st person Battle Mode ... Man have they ever improved the controls.

And finally, my highest level of praise; the pacing is amazing, you get breaks when you need them. You can often choose to fight or run. You have all sorts of weapon choices. The story pops up when you need a rest. Excellent pacing, definitely the most difficult and significant accomplishment by Capcom yet.

And I've only played the 1st chapter.

Thanks for listening.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Resident Evil storyline hoedown
« on: May 28, 2004, 05:59:16 PM »
Ah my favourite thing, RE stories. Do not read my post if you have not played through all five main RE games (and shame on you for not doing so, go now!)

1. The G-virus was successfully obtained by Hunk/Umbrella, who survived RE2 with it (note the RE3 epilogues)
2. Sherry carries a dormant, "vaccinated" G-virus sample planted in her by her father.
3. Leon's involvement with the U.S. government may still be related to a military force blackmailing him in order to obtain Sherry (again this is suggested by the RE3 epilogues). However Wesker mentions that Sherry is in his custody in one of his two reports (I'm not sure on this so please correct me)
4. MIA characters: Rebecca Chambers - her story needs some more information badly
                             Billy - is he alive?
Jill and Barry and Carlos - what did they do after Raccoon city became a crater?
5. Oswald Spencer - Spencer the true founder of Umbrella is a complete mystery - Very little information about spencer has entered the current storyline. What is interesting about Spencer is that he is the catalyst for much of Birkin and Weskers activities prior to 2, he is a primary motivating factor in the Ashford revenge plot, he is a primary motivating factor in the Marcus revenge plot,. He apparently has order two attacks against his own main scientists (Marcus and Birkin) and we don't know anything about him (other than he likes strange houses). Spencer also has an incredible ability at planning, ploting and controling the myriad resources under his control. His ability to pit his development teams against one and other has produced some remarkable innovations in the BOW field; Nemesis, Alexia and even Super -Wesker are all a result of Spencer fueling hatred and mistrust amongst his top scientists. One could hypothesize that Spencer is the central key to unraveling the Umbrella mystery. Furthermore it is highly probable that Spencer has used his resources to develop immensely powerful 'toolsets' for his own personal use.

So I'm going to place my bets that RE4 is ultimately concerned with the history, activities and plans of Ozwald Spencer, founder of Umbrella. Spencer, from what little we know of him, seems like just the type of guy to have a crazed, 'undead' cult protecting his identity, bad science, and power schemes from outside observers in rural Spain.

In regards to Umbrella being no more: the various research facilities of Umbrella have been able to operate completely independently of each other, even when one is blown sky high, another only a kilometer away can continue to persist. I see no reason why Spencer could not successfully hide a secret facility from a government investigation, especially a rural facility where the national police are afraid to go.

that is my two cents.

And SUPER, good luck with Gaiden, it sucks, it really really sucks.

General Gaming / RE:Sega Dreamcast 2????????????
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:32:22 PM »
The rumoured "NEO GEO" style business model does have potential though. If there is enough demand for home consumers to pay a premium for Atomisware arcade games, especially in the KING of FIGHTERS line up from Playmore SNK, and for SEGA arcade games the Sammy will release the Atomisware. SNK floated for over a decade serving a small but loyal group of arcades and home consumers, why can't SEGA hop on the band wagon.

Sammy has been very aggressive in steering a different path for Sega since buying in, and if there is a market for the home Atomiswave, they'll go after it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:S-Video Cables
« on: March 01, 2004, 11:50:30 AM »
I also have the Mad Catz cables (both the GC specific model and the all-in-one) and they work much better than other cables I've had. The are also very easy to find, at least where I live, Toronto.

There is a faq/plot synopsis by CVXFreak at gamefaqs that should help anyone confused with the plot, or wanting to know more.

Try renting the games too. all 3 titles you mentioned can be completed in a weekend or two by average RE players.

Did they say anything about a run button in regards to the controls? I hate RUN buttons. The analogue stick was specifically invented to avoid the run button. RE0 had fully analogue controls for the side-kick, but the main character needed a run button. Stupid fk&#@%^ing run buttons.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: FF Crystal Chronicles: Ask a question, get an answer
« on: February 12, 2004, 07:49:41 PM »
My friend just got the game and I'm really enjoying it. Two things: 1. The instruction booklet doesn't have enough info in it   (how do things work? Find out on your own). 2. How do you get mog (in single player) to help you out, besides lugging the chalice around?

Unbelievable. Never thought I'd see graphics like that on the Cube. Hope the frame rate is good. Unbelievable.

General Gaming / RE:GTA3 and Vice City double pack coming to ps2 and XBOX!
« on: November 19, 2003, 01:27:34 PM »
My brother decided to pick up an Xbox for the GTA pack, and got KOTOR as a bonus. (Which is a very nice game I might add). The Xbox double pack will result in a small increase in sales from people who have been fence sitting about a games system. This pushes them away from a PS2.

I saw that episode yesterday. Quite a fine bit of humour.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: M$ and Nintendo?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm guessing that everybody is going to go it alone. Far too many legal hassels to worry about in any other
situation.

Whats interesting is that the Moneyline article and other rumours/news about graphic chips suggests that Nintendo may be
further along in its dev cycle than either Sony or Microsoft. Maybe Nintendo will be on time for once.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Price Cuts or Game Deals coming this fall
« on: August 05, 2003, 06:29:16 AM »
I'd bet on price cuts or new bundles, right before school starts. A good indication of price cuts is inventories.
The EBs in my area are really running low on PS2 hardware and I think the reason is Sony wants to drop their price.
So stores aren't ordering at their current price.

General Gaming / Sega Saturn score!
« on: July 31, 2003, 04:54:11 AM »
I just purchased a Sega Saturn w/ Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter 2 for $60.

I have a very simple question: What is the best (most affordable) way to obtain Panzer Dragoon Saga and Nights w/ 3D controller?
Is E-bay my only hope?

Nintendo Gaming / Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica
« on: June 30, 2003, 01:48:38 PM »
Of course The GC version will be Code Veronica Complete/X (DC Japanese, PS2 USA) with the addition cut-scene work. Now if only it also came with Wesker Report 1 & 2.

Nintendo Gaming / So now are you getting GC (game boy player)
« on: May 18, 2003, 08:56:46 AM »
I plan on trading in my black GC for a platinum bundle if the bundle includes a platinum gbp.
Sounds silly but ever since my original SNES broke ddown I have this commitment to replace any initial system
purchase with a newer model. Protects my butt. Super Nintendos are hard to find.

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube's casing
« on: March 25, 2003, 08:37:43 AM »
Its not scratches. Its 'natural' fractures in the plastic. I don't remember the exact reasoning but it has to do with the molding process of the plastic. The look like small fissions, they might also be on the controllers. Don't worry, its not a defect and it won't cause any problems. Its just a little aesthetic nuissance.

That said, I have scratched the black removable disk on the GCN top with towel cleaning. O well.

Nintendo Gaming / So what are you going to do before Wind Waker.
« on: March 24, 2003, 03:59:01 PM »

Nintendo Gaming / Quick question about Zelda launch in Canada
« on: March 24, 2003, 03:32:10 PM »
I have an EB employee sitting next to me and the word is Wednesday. But I do remember when RE Zero came out two days early and EB 'forgot' to tell me. So check tomorrow, I'm betting that some places will be selling.

Nintendo Gaming / Skies of Arcadia input
« on: March 11, 2003, 04:20:36 AM »
I've only played the Dreamcast version but you should definitely buy it. Great game (40 hours+), amazing cast of characters, unique setting, good graphics (if a bit dated), good extras apparently (haven't played legends). But a great RPG, many people consider it the best next-gen RPG before last month's PS2 bombardment of quality.

TalkBack / EA To Focus More on GBA-GC Connectivity
« on: March 06, 2003, 03:50:15 PM »
The GBA connectivity seems like it would be an excellent fit with Franchise modes. Character building through GBA mini-games. That's where Miyamoto probably comes in.  That sort of thing. Or perhaps one player uses the GBA for a reciever option and can see a different angle of the field than the primary player (QB). Never the less I hope online and LAN play are in the EA games. Hopefully EA gets NHL 2004 up to snuff with the 2K series from Sega!

Soul Calibur!

Many games should be $5 to $15. Just pick some up and trade them in if you don't like them.

I use the Madcatz cables and they work great.  S-video is highly recommended.
