TalkBack / RE:Surprises from Nintendo in the Future
« on: November 08, 2003, 02:22:01 AM »
Well, I think they will have a hard time improving on the GCN pad...maybe if they built wireless controller technoloty into the system?

Anyway, I agree that with Nintendo, it is best not to count your chikcens before they hatch. I have a strong suspicion that a decision has been made to hold back the next Mario game till the next generation, probably to allow all the time in the world to polish it to a Mario 64-level.

My concern is if they pushed through another Mario game for the GCN, there wouldn't be sufficent time/resources to develop a quality Mario title for the N5 launch. If this fear of mine is true, then it could lead to either a lack-luster game or a delayed game. The GCN demonstrated that this isn't such a good thing!

Ahem...back to my original point, I just try to not get my hopes up about any of Nintendo's games until it is fairly certain they are really coming out.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
« on: October 15, 2003, 05:05:11 AM »
Well, I thought that the game deserved a better score, but then all of you seem to be viewing this game coming from a strong background of Final Fantasy RPG's...this is only the second FF game I have played in depth, the first being FF7 (for about 20 hours, till I got bored with it).

Personally, I think it is a great game. The story is a refreshing change of pace from all the "the world is going to end because of people/monsters/evil forces disturbing the natural order" that seem to be so prevalent in a lot of RPGs.

Well, unfortunately it seems this case may never get to court. It looks from the article that they are going to settle out of court...probably cheaper for Nintendo that way, since they avoid court costs.

I share the hope that if it ever does get to court, Nintendo will win.

General Chat / Welcome Home USS Abraham Lincoln!
« on: May 04, 2003, 01:01:08 PM »
Legal semantics aside, I too was heartwarmed to see the reaction of the Lincoln's sailors to our Commander in Chief's speech.

Looking into the faces of those young sailors should remind all of us of the gravity of these events and that every moment of every day, there are hundreds of people just like them that are standing watch and protecting our rights so that we can sleep in peace. I know that sounds cliched, but maybe being in the military myself just gives me a different perspective on the whole issue.

General Chat / war in iraq
« on: May 04, 2003, 12:56:11 PM »
Well, on the issue of the Iraqi people, I don't think that we have seen or will see them react to our invasion of the country in the manner in which we expected them to. There is actually a very interesting article in this month's Naval Institute Proceedings which details a number of assumptions that we made about going into Iraq and how they have panned out.

Anyway, back to the Iraqi people, I don't expect that a population that has been so brutaly repressed for so long is going to be very stable. There is a real danger that a fundamentalist Islamic movement that has already taken root in the country could bring about another totalitarian regime. I don't think the people of Iraq "root for the winning team" so much as they do what is necessary to survive. Back when Saddam was incharge, that meant rooting for Saddam and harrasing downed American pilots. With a number of radical Muslim groups threatening violence in various parts of the country and American forces seemingly unable or unwilling to stop them, survial might mean taking up the radicalist cause.

General Chat / Newbie Check-In ... right this way!
« on: May 04, 2003, 12:44:17 PM »
Hello, this is something like my 8th post with my new username. Back on the old EZ board, I think I was up around 100 or so...I don't post a lot I'm afraid, as life as a Midshipman at the US Naval Academy keeps me pretty busy (okay, I know that was a pretty shamless self-plug. Sorry about that).

Anyway, if you are really bored, pleas check out my web site. Later.

I agree with you there. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled on the import sites I visit to see if I can snag  a copy of this.

Yeah, I like there to be a little variety in gaming...as I am a capitolist at heart, I don't see anything wrong with a little friendly competition .

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda for GameCube... by Capcom?
« on: May 02, 2003, 03:21:42 PM »
I haven't seen the page in question...but what if the picture of Link in NP refers to the GBA game? Is there any wording or information that cleary links the pic to a GC game?

I haven't had the kinds of problems you are reporting...in fact, I can't even remember the game even freezing on me, which is a problem I have heard a lot of people complaining about.

Honestly, in my (un)informed opinion, your hardware is the culprit as opposed to the software.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo dishing out projects

Very true- they've kept their biggest franchises to themselves, like Mario, Zelda, and Mario Kart

Well, I'd like to point out that they have allowed Capcom to develop Zelda games and Camelot to develop Mario Sports titles...so, really, nothing is sacred. I have a personal theory that the rumored "Second GC Zelda Game" might actually be under development by Capcom.

I think that Nintendo allowing other developers to make games in its franchises is a great idea. Not only does it allow Miyamoto more freedom to explore new game franchises and concepts, it also allows new ideas to permeate into already-established game universes. As long as Nintendo and Miyamoto have oversight authority, I think the result can't help but be a win-win product.

A side-benefit to all this is that letting outsiders develop games for key Nintendo franchises can't help but bolster relationships with those developers...thus mending a few of the bridges Nintendo burned during the last generation.

"ko-NAW-mi" is basically right, I think. That is pretty much how I pronounce it, although I soften the "w" sound so it comes out more like "ko-NAH-mi."

I think that this game could do very well, especially since many Nintendo fans (like myself) never owned a PSX back in the day and consequently never got to play this game. I am curious about this game...the only game of this series that I have played is the GBC Metal Gear game, and I though that was pretty neat. That game seemed to feature a lot of stealth gameplay...is this different in MGS?

Nintendo Gaming / OFFICIAL Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes Discussion
« on: May 01, 2003, 03:26:22 AM »
I am just glad that all of those talented guys over at Silicon Knights might finally get the recognition I think they deserve from the mainstream. Eternal Darkness was AWSOME, but its sails didn't reflect that. Working on a title like Metal Gear Solid, one that everyone recognizes and regards as "cool" can't help but give Denis & Co. a boost.

Heh, who knows? Maybe the release of this game will result in sales of ED seeing a little surge!
