NWR Feedback / RE:My OPINION on PGC... Goodbye old friend
« on: April 01, 2004, 07:33:25 PM »
Bill:
I didn't post on the forum much, with just around 40 posts.. not that it matters, because my post wasn't referring to how I wasn't going to post anymore.  I was posting it as general visitor, not a forum regular.  And as for your second comment regarding IE, people need to realize that the vast majority of internet users are IE users, and it's this site is the only problem site for ME (out of the ones that I visit regularly, at least.)  The whole "you use IE, of course its crap, you're an idiot." is a tired excuse.

Bloodworth:

Thank you VERY much for the professional response, as opposed to the other two posts.  It was actually very refreshing to read that from you, because I honestly expected a "If you don't like it, leave." type of answer.  Needless to say, yours was much more welcome, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I admit I posted it at a strange time (in regards to the news) .. but it was mainly out of frustration because I was listening to music while I visited (rather loudly, too) and it was hugely interrupted by a loud, obnoxious flash ad that overlaps the entire front page, and with my speakers turned so high.. needless to say it got my attention.  So that's what really prompted me to post.   It's not popups that bug me, I use MyIE2 and it blocks them just fine.. its the flash ads that overtake the page and you can't find the damn close button, or the "in between" ads, ones that play sound, etc.  Banner ads/popups are fine..  I only have a problem when it interferes with the site itself.  But like you said, you're out of control of the ads, so I guess I'm barking up the wrong tree.

You do have a point in the improving coverage, and its encouraging to hear you say "it's clearly getting better" -- because that hopefully means that at least you noticed it was lacking/delayed for a while (or is it seriously just me who thought so?).  You also make a great point on those who check once-twice a day.. I'm one of those who checks every time they've been away from the computer for a while, which translates to 5-6 times a day.. so that's where I'm coming from.

I do recall when moderation was more strict than it is now, I think it's just that when I come here from other sites.. this one is the most strict.. and I often see plain insulting responses regarding moderation.  I realize mods aren't here to be 'friends' exactly, but I always think it turns people away when I see a newbie post a poll and he gets the third degree from about 6 people, then a mod.  Granted yes, he should read the rules first.. but that's what I meant by "spam against spam".  There's often 1 ignorantly innocent post, and then 5 spam posts such as "poll." "can you say 'banned'?"  "poll anyone?"  "poll!"

Billy and Rick I know are beyond anyone's control so nobody can be blamed.. it just seemed more rich to me when they were more involved.

I think those technical problems in 2003 also had a huge affect on my views of PGC.  It just became unreliable.  So often I'd come here first to see the page wont load after numerous attempts, and I'd wander somewhere else.  Eventually, I started wandering before coming here.  With the amount of ads, I couldn't help but wonder why there wasn't a better or more capable server to prevent all of the technicalities from happening.  On the bright side, it does seem like those are resolved, so i hope it stays that way.

I do look forward to a redesign, and I want to thank you again for your post... it actually convinced me there's still some good heart in this site, and I will in fact continue visiting because of that alone.

Thanks again, Bloodworth!

Mind if I ask what's wrong with Nintendojo, or how PGC is better?  Just curious.. I've been going there for about 3 months now, and notice the same news faster, plus some more, and an overall better design, look and feel.

And besides, the point of the thread wasn't to talk about Nintendojo, but of the changes I think need to happen to PGC.  That's all.

NWR Feedback / My OPINION on PGC... Goodbye old friend
« on: April 01, 2004, 05:36:59 PM »
I've been coming to PGC for a long, long, long time.  I always found it to be the best place for all my Nintendo needs.

Well, that's changed.

I think PGC has gone down the tubes.  The majority of the news (if not all of it) I find at other sites, such as what's quickly becoming my new home:  Nintendojo (http://www.nintendojo.com).  Maybe they don't have the reliabality of PGC (or maybe they do, I dunno), but they're more put together, more fun, up to date, easy on the eyes, and less intrusive.  And they don't even hesitate to post occasional rumors, labeled "RUMOR".  Ain't nothin wrong with that.

To me it just seems like things are always delayed here.  Of course, that's not always the case, but most of the time when I come here, I've already read everything that another site posted earlier.. and all I'm surprised with here is which popup or flash-hostile-takeover I get to experience today.  Or maybe a full page "in-between" ad, a la IGN.

Seriously, the advertisements alone are the main reason I'm nearing the end of my PGC visits.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they don't need ads, I'm very much aware of resources needed to run a successful site, and that they need money to keep things running to us for free.  All I know is out of ANY site I regularly visit, PGC BY FAR has way more ads than anybody else, and I do visit plenty of large sites that aren't funded by giant, wealthy companies.

Everybody says "Get a popup blocker!" or "Try ____ browser!"

I'M NOT GOING TO GET ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE JUST SO I CAN VISIT PGC IN PEACE!  Besides, I am using MyIE2 (may not be the best, but it works for me) and the pop up blocker built into it does barely anything for PGC.

Not to mention, the design of the site is highly outdated.  That's not really an issue, but it's becoming an eyesore.  The forum moderators are far too anal, other communites have a much more relaxed vibe.  Sure, while there may be more useless posts (or *gasp* POLLS) in other forums, they're at least more entertaining than the "spam against spam" in here.  Its just out of hand.

And finally, I miss Billy.  And I miss hearing Rick Powers tease at all the upcoming goods he knows that we don't.

I'll still check up on the old site now and then.  I'll maybe even post again (I didn't ever post much, but I had a few handfuls).. I just wish things were better.

There's so much I don't like about this site anymore, it's just sad.  I wish something would be done, it's like watching a great friend turn into a dick.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda: Wind Waker was it a let down?
« on: November 25, 2003, 06:01:25 PM »
Yes, it was a disappointment for me.  In fact, I'm thinking of trading it in for credit, I have little desire to replay it.  I beat it, and yeah it was a lot of fun, but it was just missing something that I can't put my finger on.  I did think the graphics were outstanding, and I was never and still am not a "cel-hater" ... but alas, in the end after looking back on it, I would have loved the game so much more if it were a more realistic style.  Oh well.  I'm probably not going to trade it in, but only because its Zelda.  If it was the same game under any other name, it would be gone.  As a standalone game I'd give it a B+, maybe A- .. but in comparrison to the others, maybe a B-.

On a side note, I'm shocked that Metroid Prime isn't on any of your top 5 lists.  Shocked!  My #1 of all time, by a long shot.

For too long, I've hoped these announcements meant Mario 128, realistic Zelda, or something great along those lines.  Now I've realized the best this will probably be is a new set of E-reader cards that I will have absolutely no interest in.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is progressive scan worth it?
« on: September 17, 2003, 05:27:13 AM »
Well, I ordered the component cables just so I can get the max use out of my HDTV, whether there's a difference or not.  Hopefully they'll get here by the end of the week, so I'll post here again and let you know the differences, just in case any of you are in the same position that I am in.

Also, about how I was holding B before to see if it would prompt me for progressive scan without the component cables - I was doing that with Metroid Prime, so it was a proscan game.  I just think it needs component cables to even prompt for progressive scan.  Can anybody confirm this?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is progressive scan worth it?
« on: September 14, 2003, 08:10:16 AM »
Thanks for all of your replies, it's definitely giving me a better feel on this whole thing.  Trippy Pancakes (love the name..lol), I think you said exactly what I was thinking it would be like.  The setup I have now looks so crisp already, I can't see it getting any sharper - but like you said, the component cables will probably get me more vibrant colors.

Can anybody else verify what Trippy Pancakes said? .... "Sometimes I run the games in progressive; other times not. To be honest, I can't tell one bit of difference in the two (both ways using component cables, mind you)."

I figured it would be that way - any other input on it?

Oh, one more question.. right now I don't have the component cables, but just for giggles I tried holding B on startup to see if it would ask for progressives can mode - and it didn't.  Do I need the cables for that to work?  I was using a wavebird, not sure if that makes a difference.  Finally, would I hold it while actually turning on the system, or after the "GameCube" screen?

Thanks again, everyone..

Awesome.. I know that there aren't too many progressive scan games out there - but I've been waiting to play Metroid Prime again and what better reason than to experience it on my new HDTV.  The first party games is all I need - after all, that's why I bought a Nintendo!

I'm curious to see how it will look - I just loaded up Metroid Prime now connected through s-video and honestly I couldn't imagine it looking more crisp, so... that's why I'm a little hesitent to fork over the dough for component cables!  I'm more than likely going to do it.  I bought the good TV, I might as well get the cables to utilize it to its max potential.

Nintendo Gaming / Is progressive scan worth it?
« on: September 13, 2003, 10:57:19 AM »
This whole progressive scan HDTV thing confuses me like mad.  Hopefully someone here can shed some light on it for me.  Here's my situation.

I have a 32" Progressive Scan HDTV, which supposedly upgrades all interlaced video to progressive.. right?  So there are no scanlines.  So my main question is, if my TV is already upgrading all video to progressive scan, why would I need to spend 30 bones on component cables for GameCube and actually start the game in "progressive scan mode"??  I thought the TV would already upgrade ANY image given to it?  So.. wouldn't it be progressive scan automatically, no matter what connection I used?

Hopefully I'm making some sense, even though I may be really off base.  So that's one question.. and my other - right now I've got my GC connected to the HDTV through s-video (didn't purchase the component cables yet) .. how big would the difference be if I had compenent cables with "progressive scan" mode rather than my current s-video setup?  Much better?  Slighly noticable?  On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being "omg wtf!?1! what a pleasant change!1!!" - and 1 being "..cool, it looks the same, glad I spent 30 bucks for this instead of that new kidney I needed."

THANK YOU!

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube on Widescreen TVs
« on: September 08, 2003, 04:10:52 PM »
I'm in the market to get a new TV and I'm having a hard time deciding what to get.  Widescreen TVs are awesome looking, but how are they for gaming?  Do you have to play all/most games with black bars on the side?  Do they stretch?

And is there a difference between a non HDTV Component video and an HDTV with Component, or is the quality the same?

I'm debating whether or not I should fork over the dough for an HDTV-ready TV and wait a few years till the receivers get cheaper.. or if I should just go for a component TV and get an HDTV when they become cheaper in a couple years.

There's a Philips - 30" Widescreen Flat-Tube TV that I'm looking at.. around $600, it's not HDTV ready but it has component inputs.   Should I go for that, or a 4:3 television?  I just want my games to look as best as possible.

Thanks!

Nintendo Gaming / Why I'm happy owning only GameCube...
« on: July 16, 2003, 06:27:30 PM »
If the way I wrote the initial post made it sound like there wasn't a single game in addition to the one I found that I thought was a good enough game to buy... then I came across wrong, but I don't think I did.  What I was saying was that while going through the list, there wasn't more than 1 MUST-HAVE game in MY opinion.  A must-have game and a good game are two different things.  And yeah, I haven't even played a lot of the xbox and ps2 games, but that isn't the point of the thread.  I said flat out that I'm not saying those systems don't have good games.  I got excited about the GC because it had games that I simply couldn't miss out on, and it had a lot of those games.  FOR ME, the other two consoles don't have that same value to me, the games just aren't my style as much.

To thecubedcanuck... I think you're being a bit more unrealistic to me than to take my thread and say that I'm saying not 2 of the 500+ ps2 games are worth owning.  That isn't what I said, and I'd appreciate if you didn't twist my words like that.  I simply said that I couldn't find two that I've been dying to play since I first heard about it.. the huge killer apps "screaming" to be purchased.   I never said the games aren't good, or that I wouldn't buy and enjoy a ton of them.  Hell, the point of this post wasn't even about how xbox and ps2 didn't have the games to warrent a purchase (FOR ME) .. it was about how much Nintendo put in to give us some HUGE blockbuster games.  Seriously, I see where you're coming from.. but I also can see how you're more a one track-realist who always seems to lean in the "oh, you're a fanboy" direction.  I'm not a fanboy, this thread was mearly here to show appreciation.  I didn't know saying "I'm happy with my Nintendo" implies that I'm a other-console-hatin-fanboy.  You're responses are like.. trifold-fanboyism, and seem to be against anyone who doesn't have/fully support all consoles.  xbox kicks ass.  ps2 kicks ass.  nintendo owns my ass, and kicks it.  i respect all 3 systems.  i just need one of them.  ain't nothin wrong with that.

So to clarify, I didn't say I couldn't find a second game worth owning.  I'd buy a lot of games, and enjoy them, if I had the system.  But, I couldn't find a second game that warrented the purchase of a new console.  I'd rather save my money for something else, since Nintendo deliver's enough for my needs at this point.

And at this point, it's overkill.. heh.. Anyway, just a completely random note, I've grown to fully love gba connectivity.  At first I thought it was a gimmick, but now I actually hope for this feature to be included in games.  It's that kind of extra mile that keeps me coming back.  (when it's not cheaply done anyway.. some ARE just gimmicks )

I figured there'd be somebody just saying I started this thread to praise Nintendo and bash the others, but if you just forget for a moment that in the end I'm sticking with Nintendo... the whole thing that brought up the thread was I was interested in purchasing one of the other two systems.  If I was bashing PS2 and XBOX, I wouldn't have tried to purchase both of them.  And believe me, I would have if I could find more games I wanted, I'd love having another console.  Bottom line is I just don't think it's right for me.  They're stronger for RPGs and sports, but like I said before, the only RPG type game I need is Zelda.  Sports?  Not into them, give me 1 Tony Hawk game, throw in 1 or 2 racing games and I'm pleased.

The point of the thread in the first place was just because it helped me realize the quality Nintendo has given us.  To be honest, I was pretty disappointed in this summer's lineup ... for the biggest titles to be 2 racing games (mario kart and fzero), and vjoe... I think it's just a let down after last year's anticipation.  Last year I had like 6 HUGE titles that I was waiting for over a period of like 10 months.  Now, I have a list again ("mkart, fzero, re4, tmnt, etc"), but it pales in comparison to my "Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Eternal Darkness, etc" list of the past.

That's the reason I looked for a new system in the first place.  I wanted more games to be excited about, because currently, I'm not THAT excited (save for tmnt and re4, I'm dying for those games.. and of course the next batch of grade A franchises.. desperately waiting for Metroid Prime 2 - MP is my fav. game of all time).   But as I said in my first post, the other systems' lineups compared to what Nintendo has given us... it was just extremely refreshing to see the giant list of games that Nintendo has to offer that I HAD to pick up.   You can say that's a fanboy comment all you want - but a Nintendo fanboy wouldn't have tried to buy both of the other consoles.  But doing so definitely made me appreciate my GC, and respect what Nintendo has done for us gamers out there.

Again, let me reiterate.. I'm not saying PS2 and XBOX suck.  I'm not saying there are no good games.  I'm just saying there aren't enough games that scream "BUY ME" that warrent a system purchase, mainly because I'm not into their strong genres (and GC's weak ones)

For me, it all comes down to the old school "Nintendo Seal of Quality" that I know still means something to them when they slap it on a game box.  I'm sure other GC owners out there might have been starting to doubt their system since Nintendo made it nearly impossible to follow up last year's lineup with such a big bang.. and this thread is just here to help them appreciate it a bit more.

Exactly.  I'm not dissing the other 2 systems either, it's just my personal preference as well... Teamed up with the GBP or GBASP, Nintendo is completely delivering what I expected them too.

Nintendo Gaming / Why I'm happy owning only GameCube...
« on: July 15, 2003, 03:34:51 AM »
Lately I've been thinking of getting another console.  I didn't know if I wanted an xbox or ps2, but I just wanted an alternative to GC just to play more of the games out there.  And so, I got a $30 discount for getting an Amazon.com credit card, and thought I'd use that discount towards my new purchase.  So I went to the site, and decided to load an xbox into the shopping cart.  They have a thing where you get an xbox and 2 games for $199.  I thought that was cool, so I began looking for games.  Halo, boom.. in the cart.  ......and then I could not find a second game that I honestly really wanted.  Nothing stood out.  I'm not saying that xbox games suck, but.. there weren't as many titles that I thought would just be like "buy me, I'm great!!!"  I honestly couldn't find another game to add besides Halo.

So I moved on to the PS2.  Same deal with the 2 games, so immediately I dropped GTA3 Vice City in my cart.  I couldn't find another game that was just screaming to be purchased.  I even went to ign and looked at the top reviewed games (all 9.0 and above) and read all about them, trying to find one that would make me happy.. but, either it just didn't grab me, or it was already available in some form on GC.  I don't know if the other systems just aren't my style, but I'm not into sports games, not even into RPGs that much.... I don't know, I just couldn't see anything right for me.  I'm not knocking either system, there was just nothing good for me.

Just for the hell of it, I thought I'd go through the GC games to see what I would want if I were just now purchasing the system.  Metroid.  Zelda.  Mario.  Eternal Darkness.  Resident Evil 1 and 0.  Super Monkey Ball 1+2.  Animal Crossing.  The list goes on and on... after that, I seriously could not be more pleased with my Nintendo.  I was thinking about getting another system, but now I wouldn't even want one.

Another reason to back that up, Halo is on its way to the PC at the end of summer, even with much improved graphics.  GTA3 is on the PC.  ... I mean, come on, they're making it a really easy decision here.  You'll never see the Nintendo franchises anywhere else.

That is why I'm happy owning only my Nintendo GameCube.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Commercials Thread
« on: July 10, 2003, 12:41:30 PM »
I have to say, right off the bat, I've been impressed lately with Nintendo's media advertising.  I'm seeing stuff more and more every day.  Within the past 10 minutes, I've seen 3 commercials, 2 of which were in the same commercial break.  From Soul Caliber featuring Link, to the new FZERO commercials.. they're becoming much more frequent.  Best yet, they're actually decent commercials focused on gameplay and video rather than cheap looking costumes.  It makes me feel so good to see a great commercial followed by "Only for Nintendo GameCube."  Even in addition to the commercials, things like the McDonalds Happy Meals featuring the little Sega games bases on Monkey Ball... I finally think Nintendo's doing the right thing.  It's just nice to even hear Nintendo's name once in a while.  I'm sure it will do more to get the products off the shelves quicker.  I just hope they keep it up, and even push it further if they can.  What do you think about Nintendo's "new stance" on advertising?

Nintendo Gaming / Is the GBA that much different then SP?
« on: July 07, 2003, 01:46:38 PM »
I bought a normal GBA right when it first came out.  I played it for about a week, and then never bothered to pick it up again.  It was stuck in a drawer for the longest time.  Then I saw the SP, and it looked so damn cool, and had the 3 features that pushed it over the top (light, battery, flip top) ... I traded in my GBA the other day and bought the SP, and its one of the best gaming decisions I've ever made.  I play it constantly, and carry it with me constantly.  The main reason I didn't play the original was the light.  Now, I take it everywhere.  When I go to pick up my girlfriend at night, it doesn't bother me to wait anymore.. I could play my SP in pure darkness in my car.  I play it at night before I go to sleep, all the time, any time.  It's the greatest.  Definately, if you're considering between the two, SP no contest.  I LOVE the system, and without a light... I wouldn't play it.  It's a pain in the neck (literally) to sit under a lamp. Not very "portable" that way, is it.

SP ALL THE WAY!  *hugs his SP*

I'm pretty sure there's an adapter that lets you hook up the GC to a computer monitor, but is there something that will work though a laptop?  I don't know if the same adapter would work, or how to find that adapter.  I figure it'd be different, since you need to have a laptop powered on to use the screen, and a computer monitor is stand-alone.  Anyone know?

« on: May 20, 2003, 11:10:34 AM »
Game Zero was one of my biggest anticipated titles at E3, and I haven't heard anything about it.  Did I miss anything?  I know N-Space makes Giest, but the only thing that "Game Zero" COULD be if it WAS shown, is Giest.  But I hope it isn't that.. though Giest looks great, it would be greater to have Giest and another amazing game, hopefully Game Zero.

So has anyone heard anything about it?  Did I miss an anouncement or something?

NWR Feedback / How about a "Poll Forum"
« on: May 04, 2003, 08:35:28 PM »
First of all, what difference does it make about how many posts you have?  So what if someone becomes an "uber user" by posting so many times in polls.   It was merely a suggestion.   As for the bandwidth, I don't see how it would be any different than the usual users browsing/using the forums.  Maybe I have the wrong idea about how they work, but I think complaining about other users upping their post count is a little pointless.

Any real feedback about the suggestion?

NWR Feedback / How about a "Poll Forum"
« on: May 04, 2003, 06:32:12 PM »
I think it would be great to have a forum dedicated to polls of any kind.  Most posts are locked since they end up being a poll of some kind, however lots of times the results could be interesting.  Maybe not informative, but just interesting.  So my idea (I don't know if its been mentioned before) would be to add a separate forum.  So there'd be the Gamecube forum, the GBA forum, Polls forum, etc.  All 'polls' posts could be moved there, and it would be fine to have posts such as "Do you like Metroid Prime or Zelda WW better?"

What do you guys think?
