TalkBack / Lieberman Talks Videogame Violence... Again
« on: April 11, 2003, 08:16:12 AM »
I'm sick of the often repeated argument that goes like this "I have played violent video games all my lif and I'm not violent, so that proves that video games don't make you violent"

So you conducted your own research? What was your sample size? (oh wait it was just one)  What was your control group (oh wait you don't even know what a control group is).   Your own experiences are in know way proof applicable to all of Society.

I likewise am skeptical of Lieberman's study (Even though he will try to have a large enough smaple group, and a control group)  With an issue like this it is much to dificult to single out one issue with youth over a long period of time because of all the factors of ethics that would come into place in trying to control every aspect of the study subject's life.  The most that could be claimed is that the study showed that there was a correlation between violence and video games.  As every research scientist will tell you, correlation does not equal causation.

To claim that violent video games have zero effect on violence is rubbish.  Without getting into the Nature vs. Nurture debate, I think we can safely admit that who we are and the choices we make are largely determined by what we have experienced in life.  Whether it's friends, media, moral teachings, video games, etc.,  What goes into our minds is processed and becomes part of who we are.  Just because the large majority of us (myself included) have played video games all our lives and haven't shown the slightest inkling of manifesting that violence into real life, does not mean our personal experience is proof that violent video games are in no way connected to real life violence and crime.  This is especially true in cases of younger children that may have a difficult time differentiating between reality and fiction and may not have the home support to help teach that difference.  By saying this I don't mean that violent video games should be banned.  i enjoy my first ammendment right to zoom in with a sniper rifle(this being a video game of course) on the back of the head of an unknowing victim, and cackle as I bust a cap(Even if that means I'm desensitized to violence, I'm thankful for that right).  I'm just annoyed that people make claims that violent media has no bearing on real life violence, because they feel threatened they make uninformed judgements.  I'm likewise annoyed with politicians that use violent media as a scapegoat instead of the real problems (decline of the american family, corruption, etc)  They use this scapegoat to further promote their own political agendas.  Video games don't make anybody commit crime,  bet they definately can influence people to, even if that influence is minor.

I think GBA is the perfect medium for reintroducing some of these classic ports to these younger gamers.  Also any new 2d sidescrollers will probably find a better home on the GBA.  Use the cube for current state of the art technology.  Also all of these older games are to be had for free from emulation sites on the internet for FREE, plus the roms on pc's feature a save feature for those older games that you had to sit for hours in one sitting to beat the game.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo's LAN stratagy - Why?
« on: April 09, 2003, 09:27:39 AM »
To answer Mattfish.
I don't know about ps2 but i have played LAN games on Xbox.  Halo is a blast with 8 people in the same room all talking smack.  Very hectic.  I would be excited if Nintendo would release LAN games.  I found 8 to be twice as fun as 4 when it comes to certain multiplayer games.  The only issue is getting 2 tv's and 2 systems  and 8 controllers together.  It's easier as I live in a college town.  where whole houses just have college students and the living room is built around the video game setup and all your neighbors likely have systems as well.

TalkBack / Metroid Prime 2 Poll at Nintendo.com

I personally would be disapointed if all retro and nintendo did was make another game exactly like MP 1 but longer and harder.  I'm confident though that the will make significant and creative revisions to make MP 2 just as innovative as MP 1.  I agree that multiplayer or taking away the lock on to try and make mp a halo clone(although I wouldn't mind a new franchise creating a grade A fps) would be sacriledge.  I do think samus should have faster response to the analog stick.  I also think dual analog would be a good idea (hear me out now)  Dual analog would allow a greater ability to look around and explore.  I personally found it annoying to have to stop everytime I wanted to look around.  THis would also allow greater visibility of the platforms.  Because of the additional skill in controlling, more skill would be required.  I'm not suggesting changing mp into a fps shoot'em up, Lock on should definately be kept, keeping the emphasis on being a first person adventure.  As far as switching beams, I propose retro adopt a system similar to EA's bond, where up and down pn the d-pad could cycle through beams and left and right could cycle through visors.  Also, please get all the bugs out before releasing the game this time.  I swear every time I tried to access the map, the game froze.  I hope Nintendo doesn't bow to the ignorance of the masses to make it a multiplayer, but keep it an adventure game like unto the first metroids I loved so much.

Nintendo Gaming / Dual Anolog: Am I the only one
« on: April 08, 2003, 02:53:20 PM »
Goldeneye offered several different control schemes, default being honey.  i found a much more lethal control scheme was solitare where the joystick was used to look around and the c buttons were used to move forward and backward and to strafe.  This allowed for greater speed as well as accuracy for head shots (assuming you take off auto aim which is the only way to play).  This method of control is far superior to Honey and I'm yet to find a honey player who can hold a match to a skilled solitarian.  That being said the next-gen consoles took a que from this and added another analog stick to make these advantages more accessible to the mainstream.  Dual-analog  is in no way inferior to GE's control.  It only requires some time to get used to the advantages offers just as solitaire took some serious time to get used to over honey.  But in the long run it is worth it.  As far as keyboard and mouse go, if I wanted to use  those, I'd get on a PC game forum and not a game cube forum
