Nintendo Gaming / Valve Software Founder comments on Miyamoto
« on: May 10, 2003, 06:29:08 PM »
Im a Gamespot Complete member, and a couple days ago they put up a developer interview for the guys doing Half Life 2.  Gabe Newell, founder of Valve was talking about the autosave system, and how if they've done it properly, you'll trust the system and not have to always worry about quick saving.  He believes that you should just be able to play the game, without worrying about some kind of exterior action like 'saving'.  In any case, while talking about this he sais the following:
Quote

"This is something that I think Miyamoto does really well. You can trust his game design. ... He'll acomadate your skill level and your methods and plan for them so that you can just play the game rather than the most frequently used commands in the game being 'save' and 'restore'."
This really brought home to me how much Miyamoto influences not just us, his fans, but the entire industry.

Nintendo Gaming / Worst GC game ending
« on: April 11, 2003, 10:45:38 AM »
I beat Mario Sunshine in 2 and a half days.  That ending pissed me so much that I returned the game on the third day.

Nintendo Gaming / Def Jam Vendetta
« on: April 01, 2003, 10:09:18 PM »
I got a prerelease copy tonight and just beat the single player. There is no create a fighter which is quite dissapointting. The grapple system is excellent. Most of the musicians/fighters I am not familiar with, but its a pretty fun game.  With a story mode that can be beat in a couple hours and no create a fighter, I'd definitely recomend it only as a rental to those of you who dont play much multiplayer. I havent had an oppurtunity to check out the multiplay yet, but from the rest of the game Im looking foward to it greatly.

Nintendo Gaming / How much can you get for a used GameCube?
« on: March 09, 2003, 05:08:04 PM »
Screw Funcoland.  Go to ebay and browse the gamecube systems, go to the 'going, going, gone' listings and you'll get a good idea of what final bids are coming out at.  I can nearly guarantee you'll get more for your stuff, and you'll get it in cash.

TalkBack / Teens Still Controlling Game Market

I think it's probably obvious to all of us that image is most important to children. From my own observations it seems to peak around 14 or 15. (No offense to our younger compatriots, If you're on these forums and not a troll then you've already, in my eyes, proved that you are more mature then most your age.)  It doesnt surprise me in the least that youd see more 17 year and up gamecube owners.  People choose their consoles for different reasons.  As for myself, Ive got my cube, and when I can afford one Ill get an XBox (Live makes me drool. )  Of course the cube was my first choice mainly for the games.  If not for the games its just a hunk of plastic on a shelf, regardless of how popular a hunk of plastic it may be.

TalkBack / Prima to Publish Code Books for Action Replay
« on: February 26, 2003, 02:24:20 PM »
More importantly,  whats the point of making a book that contains data easily and freely available over the internet?  You wont catch me shelling out any cash when I can go to the next room and look up any codes I like.

Nintendo Gaming / DivX?
« on: February 22, 2003, 02:51:18 PM »
I imagine noone has yet made a game where they could justify the cost of licensing the divx stuff as opposed to just using in house stuff.

TalkBack / Extreme...Pool?
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:51:50 AM »
All I know about the game is what Ive seen in the 6 screens recently posted.  I dont see how a pool game can be extreme... but whatever.  As long as the playing pool is fun, I couldn't care less what they called it.

NWR Feedback / Locked Threads
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:47:50 AM »
Threads are getting locked a lot more often on the new boards.  I dont think this is inherently a bad thing, in fact I would side with Rick and Billy on this one, because at least they manage to keep the boards civil, and thats a rarity on the net.  I do think though that it would be nice to have fewer locked threads with no explanation.  Even it IS an obvious poll, or something else blatant.  A short 'this is a poll: locked" post would be appreciated.  Im only asking because Ive seen a couple posts locked that I wasnt entirely sure of why.  While I fully support the rights of the board operators to run it as they see fit, I think we'd all appreciate knowing their reasoning.

Nintendo Gaming / More developers drop the GCN: and so what?
« on: February 15, 2003, 08:42:04 PM »
Should Nintendo make a standard practice out of forcing people to develop for both their consoles, or neither, they would probably be brought up on anti-trust charges, and rightfully so.  They would in effect be using their might in one sector to try and dominate another. ::}  I love nintendo, but I dont think they should do that.

Nintendo Gaming / Drought? What drought?
« on: February 09, 2003, 07:42:08 AM »
I dont particularly see a drought, but I do finish games quickly usually.  Its pretty rare that it will take me longer than a week to beat a game.    (I beat mario sunshine after a day and a half, hated the ending.)  Some games are good enough to play twice.  Im going through Metroid Prime again at a more leisurely pace.  I think what an earlier poster mentioned about simplification of games was pretty close to the mark.  Im not saying I could do any better mind you... Im sure its a very difficult balance to strike.  A developer would probably prefer to have an easier game that people will play as opposed to one that becomes frustrating enough that people dont finish it.  Still, there are a lot of games out, certainly more than I can afford, now if blockbuster would just carry more then 10 of them, I could actually experience them. heh

The NFL Blitz cabinet in my arcade had a memory card slot for N64 mem cards.  I only had a couple customized plays, so I never tried it.

NWR Feedback / Why I love PGC.
« on: February 04, 2003, 04:56:05 PM »
Ok, I cant believe Im posting this, but I was just browsing the boards like I do every day (never really post though) and Im reading a thread over in gamecube discussion.  The opening post was pretty much a rant/flame, but there were some interesting follow ups. ANYWAYS... as soon as it devolved into flames, there was Rick shutting it down, and THAT is what I love about this place.  There is someone here constantly, news updates every day,  and the best part?  They do it because they are like the rest of us, they have an honest passion for Nintendo.  You could trade launch day stories with em, discuss the possibilitys for E3, or any of the other things that facinate us.  Make no mistake, it IS a job they do, but it is also, as far as I can see, a joy.  So heres one for you guys, Ive read PGC since before launch (though to be honest I never clicked on the 'forums' link until IGN went pay)  and have been constantly amazed at the quality and number of updates, reviews, previews, and all the rest.  Thanks Rick, Billy, and all the gang.
