Nintendo Gaming / RE:Sales Figures
« on: December 20, 2004, 10:00:48 AM »
One thing we must all remember is that the if the PSP does do well in Japan (even though the DS outsold it) that's just in Japan. How much of a lead will Nintendo have here in the states when the PSP saunters in? 1 million? 2.5 million? DS will have a major advantage over the PSP. This is kinda playing out like the launch of the PS2, which had a year advantage, only this time the tables have turned. Even though most of DS's launch games are relatively weak (check out EGM, which gave Ping Pals a 0.0, 1.5, 0.0), they're bound to have better one's out by March. Hopefully.

Nintendo Gaming / The EA Monopoly?
« on: December 20, 2004, 09:44:58 AM »
What's up with Electronic Arts? First they buy the ENTIRE NFL franchise, effectively eliminating all competition, including the oh-so-close-you're-almost-as-good-as-Madden ESPN sports franchise (not that it mattered to us Cube owners) but now they bought a huge 20% chunk from Ubi Soft? Are they trying to gain a monopoly on the market (duh)? I expected Microsoft to do this, but EA is filling that spot in nicely. This is bad for the market. Competiveness breeds innovation. Will EA buy out other sports, including NBA or MLB or NHL? I'm surprised EA hasn't offered Nintendo a "good fair" price...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS-IGN Controversy
« on: December 11, 2004, 12:33:25 PM »
Well, despite some of the flaws of the DS, it IS selling very well, on both sides of the Pacific. What I don't get is why numerous websites reported that the DS launched was "subdued". I've seen two headlines on gamespot.com, the bottom saying "Nintendo DS brings out light crowds" while the top says "DS beats retail expectations in Japan" or "Nintendo ups shipments of DS." Am I missing something here?

P.S. Check out the PSP launch:

I don't believe all of IGN is bad. Just some of it. Kinda like the government.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Are you a blindly-loyal vicious nutcase?
« on: December 05, 2004, 09:02:30 AM »
I can't help but notice that it seems most websites would love to see Nintendo go under, as if they were all conspiring against it. I think most people critisize Nintendo because they hate to admit that they enjoy their "E" rated games. Most die hard GTA and Halo fans all fondly (at least the ones I know) remember Mario in 2D, but still critisize Nintendo. For example, the following conversation I experience at least once a week:

Me: Remember the old Super Mario Games?
Hypocrit #1: Yeah those were good times.
Hypocrit #2: I beat the games a dozen times.
Hypocrit #1: My SNES still works. Played the other day.
Hypocrit #2: Yep good old reliable Nintendo.
Hypocrit #1: Did you get your PS2 back yet?
Hypocrit #2: Yep, and its still broken! Had to send it back!
Me: Unlike the original Gameboy.
Hypocrit #1: Yeah, that thing was indestructable.
Hypocrit #2: Fell down stairs, water damage, two story drop...works like a swiss clock.
ME: So, you guys like Nintendo?
Hypocrit #1: No! Its a I LOVE HALO 2 system!
Hypocrit #2: Nintendo Sucks!!11!1

So, people have an inferiority complex when it comes to Nintendo, because every game released since after the NES has some kind of Nintendo influence on it. It is true that some people over at IGN probably hate Nintendo (God knows why), but I don't believe that represents the entire site, and most of their reviews are fair and accurate. Don't like IGN? Go to Gamespot.com, probably the best multi-platform site on the web. Just don't go to the forums. So...many...Xbox...fanboys...

I disagree. IGN really isn't that bad. I consider 1up.com the worst. Sure, there appears to be a swing among editors, but i still believe that their game reviews are the cleanest, most organized reviews on the web, beside gamespot.com, which is an excellent unbiased website in my opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / DS-IGN Controversy
« on: December 04, 2004, 10:18:09 AM »
Recently at IGN's Nintendo DS website, there was an entire mailbag filled with anti-IGN-bias-against-Nintendo rants from more than a handful of seemingly unhappy Nintendo fans. Most tirades centered round the continue comparison of the DS with Sony's PSP. So here is the question of the day: Is IGN being unfairly cruel to the Nintendo DS? or Is it fair accurate journalism, which none of us hardcore Nintendo fans want to hear? We do get it plenty from other various "un-biased" websites. The mailbag editor did sound off against these rants, and in fact stated that he recommends not buying a DS this year, and instead wait for better software and a price cut. What do you think?

P.s. Please read the mailbag at IGN first before answering.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Harvest Moon: FOMT
« on: December 18, 2003, 09:47:20 AM »
Harvest Moon for GBA is getting mixed reviews.
date site name     link article                          score
12-08-2003       Game Zone                            8.5 / 10
11-26-2003       Gamespy                                2 / 5
11-24-2003       IGN                                         8.9 / 10
12-01-2003       GamePro                                 4 / 5
12-08-2003       1UP                                         6 / 10
12-01-2003       netjak                                     9.2 / 10
11-25-2003       Nintelligent Network              8.5 / 10
11-22-2003       N-Insanity                                9 / 10

The big websites, such as IGN and Gamepro, have given it awesome reviews. The lower scores are from people who obviosly don not enjoy this game whatsoever, which is evident in thier reviews. If you like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossiing, buy this game. Good luck finding it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Console Wars: Game On - Article in TIME Magazine
« on: December 15, 2003, 10:58:15 AM »
You know, i've said this before, and I'll say it again:I think Nintendo knows what they are doing. They have made some mistakes in the past, such as shunning technology and using cartridges. But, you have to admit, weren't there some awesome games for the N64? I mean, The Legend of Zelda? Super Smash Brothers? Goldeneye? So it is no use blaming Nintendo for that. It is ashame that Nintendo gets shafted a lot, and anyone who has played a Nintendo game KNOWS that a synonym for Nintendo is Quality. Reports like this are a dime a dozen, and like most of our news, it focuses on the BAD things that happen. It is a pity that our generation is attracted to a console for one game. PS2=GTA? Now, not to discredit Sony or anyone who likes it, cause god bless there are a few of you who like PS2 for other reasons (excellent RPGs, most notably), but it is the #1 selling point for the PS2. The fact of the matter is Nintendo is trying to make quality video games that everyone can enjoy, not those 18 & older. I believe that Nintendo will spring back, and if they don't, well, at least they'll make some hell of 3rd party games, and they'll get the respect they deserve.

Nintendo Gaming / GCN out of the Race?
« on: December 07, 2003, 07:50:32 AM »
Here is a comment from John Davison in the 12/5/03 of 1up.com Thinking out loud:

"Hopefully, as we get closer and closer to the holidays, things will start to pick up and we'll look back on this little rant as just me huffing and puffing before it was time. Speaking to game industry execs though, it's clear that these people are a little worried and that they all blame the same thing: It's all due to the rate at which systems are selling. It seems that everyone thought that the boxes would be cheaper by now. Sure, the GameCube is only $99, but they could give it away with boxes of Apple Jacks and it wouldn't help. The Cube is out of the race, and the real action is between the Xbox and the PS2. The (admittedly somewhat obvious) argument goes that if these consoles were priced at $149 (or less) instead of $179, they would be selling like the proverbial hotcakes, and games would be snapped up with them."The Cube is out of the race, and the real action is between the Xbox and the PS2.

So, What is up with that?

Nintendo Gaming / No PSP, please!!
« on: May 22, 2003, 11:16:13 AM »
PSP sounds like a portable PSOne to me. Why would Sony want to dip into this market? They're making plenty of money on PS2, so why would they want a portable device. Do they hate Nintendo that much? I believe I know the answer: They are afraid. Afraid that Nintendo will rise from the ashes and become a market leader, and give them a run for their money. I'm convinced that about 80% of people who own a Playstation own it for Grand Theft Auto and that's it. They might go out and buy say, Lord of the Rings, only because they saw the movie (though the game is quite good). The public is a fickle bunch, and moods change very quickly, Grand Theft Auto today, something else tommorrow. Grand Theft Auto will eventually lose popularity, maybe something like only a million copies being sold. This happened to some of the Nintendo Franchises, that are a whole lot better than Grand Theft Auto, but sell much less. Sony knows this and this is a step to try to take Nintendo down now-and not have to deal with them in future. Nintendo may not be system of choice now, but that could change. What worries me is if Sony gets a Grand Theft Auto game like GTA3 on it. That could swing the public easily. Either this thing will flop, or be like Xbox and stick around, being a thorn in Nintendo's side. The older Xbox gets, the better games there are, and that is something to watch out for.

Gamecube + 10 Share points
Xbox - -02 points
PST - - 8 points
Worldwide 1.3 million units more than Xbox(worldwide)
3 of the 4 best sellers belong to Nintendo from Janurary to March 2003.
Windwaker - over 1 million copies sold
Pokemon - 1.7 million
GBA SP: 950,000

There, that blos this discussion out of the water. Notice the 1.3 million more Gamecubes sold than Xbox Ratio. Case closed. Rick, please, lock this out.

Many people complain about Nintendo milking there franchises. They do. But, all they games are excellent AAA+ games, and are creative and innovative in their own right. Metroid in First person, Zelda Cel-shaded, Mario with a water pack. They are all better games than any newer games on Xbox ot PS2. So shut your trap and enjoy. Besides, not all "older" gamers want super violent games. I've seen 18 year olds play Animal Crossing then switch right over to Grand Theft Auto, then back to Animal Crossing. As long as Nintendo's franchises are excellent games, who cares?

"Why are they milking their franchises? I'm sick of it! I want games like Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Star Wars games, and Halo! Sure, those are also milked franchises, even more so, but I'm a hypocrite!"

That sums up this discussion.

Nintendo Gaming / Golden Sun Nintendo's Final Fantasy?
« on: May 05, 2003, 11:02:44 AM »
Yeah, but where would Golden Sun go? I mean, you explored all of the mao, and all the islands and continents are surrounded by waterfalls. Golden Sun has that capability of becoming a Gamecube Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy is a standard that all RPG's are measured. Golden Sun for Gamecube will have to be better than...say Final Fantasy X.

Speaking of Fire Emblem...WHERE THE HECK IS OUR AMERICAN VERSION! COM ON NINTENDO, WE WON'T DISSAPOINT!!!!!!

Hey. I'm 14 and I've played all the classic firstperson shooters-Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Wolfenstein 3D, heck even Spear of Destiny. Blue Key, Red Key, Yellow Key, well that was about how deep it got. They still hold a special place in my heart, I can even still remember the cheat (IDDQD-invincibilty IDKFA all guns). The graphics sucked, but it was still fun to punch out an imp. I nearly went blind playing Wolfenstein. Very little skill still fun.

General Chat / Windows XP problems
« on: April 07, 2003, 04:50:44 AM »
Ok...this has nothing to do with Game Consoles, but it does have to do with PC games. Some of my games won't work on Windows XP. In Age of Empires 2, the loading screen comes on (lasts for several minutes) and then the pregame cinematics starts. But as soon as the Age of Empires 2 cinematic ends, the screen goes black and the program is "not responding." I've reinstalled it a few times (both Age of Empires 2 and the Expansion) with no avail. Need for Speed won't work either, and even Block Breaker has problems (no sound, line across the bottom). Anyone have any ideas how to fix it? Or direct me to a place?

My only wish is that they would make it a little bit more RPG-ish. You know, like you have to have your Pokemon run on a conveyer belt to open a door, or have it lift up a rock that is blocking your way. And how about some Golden sun graphics?

Jirachi- yeah I know-I even disgust myself sometimes. I think we all have a little fanboyish in us, no matter how much we hate to admit it. Unless your rich, then you probably own every console and game, and don't care. I'don't know how people support 2 consoles when I can't even support 1 console and a gameboy. Oh no, just I went off topic...again...

Ok how about this, we call Xbox the Halo-box, and we let other Xbox fanboys call Gamecube the Metroid-Zelda-Mario-SSBM-Rouge Leader-Resident Evil-Animal Crossing-Eternal Darkness-Super Monkey Ball-Skies of Arcadia-Mario Sport games-[insert favorite game here]-cube. Or "Best Console" for short. That seems pretty fair.
